To (til 10 ham it may concern Be it known that I, lVILLIAM H. Hours, a citizen of the United States, residing at Germantown, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVashbasins for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to wash basins or lavatory reservoirs that may be attached to any model of automobile, the primary object of which is to provide a wash basin secured to the underface of the running board, said running board having an open-- ing therein through which access may be had to said basin, a door hinged to said running board adapted to form a closure for said opening to conceal the interior of the basin and form a part of the running board when in a closed position.

A. further object of my invention is to provide a lavatory of this character wherein the. water supply to be used in the basin thereof for washing purposes is stored in a tank or receptacle supported on the chassis of the automobile, a pipe leading from said tank and communicating with the said basin to supply water thereto through a spigot or valve in said basin, a

. plugged discharge outlet in the bottom of the basin to discharge the water onto the highway when used.

A still further object of my invention is to provide a novel lavatory of this characrer provided with a storage tank for water,

the supply thereto being effected by projecting a hose through an opening in the apron of the automobile into the capped opening of the supply tank, the other end of the hose being in communication with the source of water supply, means carried on the inner face of saidapron adjacent the opening therein to close said opening when the hose is removed.

Furthermore I have provided in a novel apparatus of this character unique lighting means on the underface of the hinged door to provide light in the night use of this basin. I also. provide a mirror carrier on the underface of said door, furthermore in the basin and supported on the side walls thereof are trays adapted to contain various toilet articles or medicaments for the convenience of the occupants of the automobile.

Referring more particularly tothe views a broken fragmentary portion of a vehicle chassis is designated by the numeral 1 whilst the apron thereof is indicated by the numeral 2, said apron supporting the usual running board 3. This running board 3 has an opening et cut therein to give access to the wash basin 5 of my novel device, the same being secured to the underface of the aforesaid running board 3 in any of the well known ways. The basin 5 comprises front and rear walls, 6 and 7 respectively, and end walls 8 and 9, said walls being integral with each other and with the bottom 10 of the basin. The top of the basin 5 is open and is of substantially the same area as the aperture 4 in the running board 3. The end walls 8 and 9 are provided at their upper portions with integral flanges 11 and said flanges are positioned against the under-surface of the running board 3 and are secured thereto by bolt and nut fastening devices or the like 12 which hold the basin securely to the running board 3. Other suitable fastening means may be used but it is desirable not to have any part of said fastening means projecting above the upper face of the running board 3. A cover 13 is hinged to the running board 3 and is adapted when in closed position to lightflush with the upper face of the running board 3 and to this end it is convenientl supported on the shouldered edges 14. provided for the purpose around the aperture A finger-eyelet 15 is conveniently provided on the upper outer face of the cover 13 to provide for its opening and closing relative to the running board 3. A discharge outlet 22 is provided in the bottom of the basin 5 and is under the control of a plug 23, the removal of said plug permitting the draining of the basin 5 on to the highway or other place where the vehicle may be at the time said basin is used.

Side trays 21, 25 are secured to the end walls 8 and 9 respectively, of the basin 5 and said trays are conveniently divided into compartments for the holding of various toilet articles or medicamcnts for the use of the occupants of the automobile. The cover 13 is providedon its underface with an electric incandescent light 26 which may be arranged in circuit with the ordinary lighting circuit of the automobile, said light providing for the use of the apparatus after dark. A mirror 27 may be conveniently inset into the underface of the cover 13 so that when the door is opened the person using the basin 5 may also have the use of a mirror for completing his or her toilet. A bracket 28 conveniently secured to and depending from the chassis 1 and connecting with the basin 5 affords a bracing and additional supporting means therefor. The apron 2 is provided with an opening 29 under the control of a closure plate 30, said closure plate being adapted to be swung on one side for the insertion of a tube into the filling cap when it is desired to replenish the tank or receptacle 16 with a fresh supply of water and said closure plate 30 is conveniently operable by means of a finger hold 31.

A canvas or other suitable material bag 32 as indicated in Figure 1 by the dotanddash line may be attached beneath the basin 5 by means of hooks and eyes if deemed necessary whereby the used water can be drained thereinto for the purpose of replenishing the radiator supply.

From the foregoing description the use and advantages of my improved wash basin for automobiles will be clearly apparent without further explanation or description. Whilst there has been shown and described one practical embodiment of my invention, it will be apparent that the same is susceptible of many detail changes and varia tions and the right is hereby reserved to make such changes and variations as fairly lie within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. The combination with the running board and chassis of an automobile of a lavatory basin, a cover for said lavatory basin adapted to seat in flush with the surface of said running board, means for supplying water to said lavatory basin, and means associated with the running board apron whereby said reservoir may be replenished. v

2. The combination with the running board and-chassis of'an automobile of a wash basin, means for bracing said wash basin to the chassis, a hinged cover for said wash basin adapted to seat in flush with the surface of said running board, a reservoir for supplying water to said wash basin, and means associated with the running board apron whereby said reservoir may be replenished.

3. The combination with the running board and chassis of an automobile of a 'wash basin, means for bracing said wash basin to the chassis, a hinged cover for said wash basin adapted to seat in flush with the surface of said running board, a reservoir for supplying water to said wash basin, a closable aperture in the running board apron through which the reservoir may be re-filled when desired, and toilet holding receptacles in said wash basin.

1. The combination with the running board and chassis of an automobile of a wash basin, means for bracing said wash basin to the chassis, a hinged cover for said wash basin adapted to seat in flush with the surface of said running board, a reservoir for supplyingwater'to said wash basin, a

closable aperture in the running board apron through which the reservoir may be re-filled when desired, toilet holding receptacles in said wash basin, and a'mirror on the underside of the wash basin cover.

5. The combination with the running board and chassis of an automobile of a wash basin, means for bracing said wash basin to the chassis, a hinged cover for said wash basin adapted to seat in flush with the surface of said running board, a reservoir for supplying water to said wash basin, a closable aperture in the running board apron through which the reservoir may be re-filled when desired, toilet holding receptacles in said wash basin, a mirror on the underside of the wash basin cover, and means whereby the wash basin and mirror may be illuminated after dark. 7
