Description

F. STICKEL. COMBINED VALVE AND PISTON. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 18, 1921.

comsrnnn VALVE AND PISTON.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented July 11, 192.2.
Application filed March 18, 1921. Serial No. 453,428.
To all "whom it may concern:
Be. it known that I, Fannnnron STIGKEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Valves i and Pistons, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to an air pump and more particularly to a combined valve and 7 piston structure and has for its primary object the construction and arrangement of parts whereby, in the upward travel of the piston, air may readily pass from the upper portion of the pump to the lower portion, and upon descent of the piston this communication will be cut off, thereby en abling the air in the bottom portion of the pump to be properly compressed.
An object of the invention is the construction of parts whereby the foregoing action will be positive thereby assuring accurate operation.
A feature of the invention is the manner of associating the piston rod with the piston so that the valve will be mechanically opened and closed.
Besides the above my invention is distinguished in the novel manner of mounting the valve disc so that the engagement of the I disc with the seat will increase according to the compression within the pump thereby positively preventing leakage.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in con nection with the accompanying drawing wherein i Fig. 1 is a fragmentary portion of the pump showing my improved combined'valve and piston in position. r
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view.
Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged vertical sectional views showing the valve in its two positions.
Again referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates an ordinary pump barrel in which my combined valve and'piston 2 operates. It will be noted that the piston rod 3 is hollow and provided with holes 4 for a purpose clearly set forth in my copending application filed July 23, 1920, Serial No. 398,404 therefore a detailed description will be eliminated for the sake of clearness.
My improved valve and piston consists of a nut 5 that is provided with a tubular extension 6 which in turn is provided with diametrically arranged slots 7. The numeral 8 designates the usual flexible cup washer that is clamped in place by the plug 9 that has screw threaded engagement with the nut as indicated at 10. This plug is provided with a through air port 11 to establish direct communication between the upper portion of the barrel and the lower portion in a manner now to be described. The hollow rod 3 has passed therethrough a pin 12 that is slidably mounted in the slots and this rod has mounted, in its lower end, in any suitable manner, a flexible valve disc 13 which is adapted to co-operate with the convex valve seat 14: formed on the end of the plug 9.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that in lifting the piston by the bandle 15 the valve disc will leave the seat and this movement is limited by the co-operation of the pin 12 with the slots 7. In the ascension of the piston air will readily pass through the slots and port 11 into the bot tom portion of the pump and as soon as pressure is applied to the handle 15 to force the piston downwardly the valve disc will immediately engage its seat thereby cutting 01f the foregoing communication and allow the air in the bottom part of the pump to be compressed.
A very important feature of my invention is that in proportion to the compression the pressure upon the rod is increased, thereby increasing the pressure of the valve upon its valve seat and assuring an absolutely air tight connection.
Another feature of the invention is that the barrel is opened and closed mechanically and therefore the action of air is not relied upon for closing the valve which has proven and provided with an airport extending therethrough, and a valve disc controlling passage of air through said port.
2. In a pump, a hollow piston rod a nut, a
tubular extension on said nut and slidably engaging about said hollow piston rod;
means for limiting relative sliding movement of the nut and rod, a piston plug carried by said nut and provided with anair port extending therethrough, a valve seat formed upon the lower end of the piston rod, and a disc valve on said seat for controlling passage of air through said port.
3. A combined valve and piston comprising a rod, a nut having a loose connection with the rod, a flexible washer, a plug havingscrewthreaded engagement with the nut for clamping the washer in place, said plug being provided with a "through air port, and a valve disc supported by said rod for covering and uncovering said port inoperat'ion of the piston;
4. A combined valve and piston comprismg a nut having a tubular extension provided with a pair of slots, a rod, a pin fastened through the rod and slidably mounted in said slots, a valve'disc supported by the end of the rod, a flexible washer, and a plug vscrew threaded in the nut for clamping the FREDERICK g om
