PETER ZIMBELMANN, 0F AURORA, ILLINOIS.
' Doon CHECK.
To all 107mm t may concern.'
Be it known .that I, PETER ZIMBELMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Aurora, county of Kane, and State of Illinois, have invented certain newV and useful Improvements in Door Checks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements inV door checks especially adapted for use in conjunction with the trap doors on railway vestibules, and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this character which is strong and durable in use and efiicient in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. l, is a view illustrating a door check embodying the invention in position of use on a vestibule trap door,
Fig. 2, a partial longitudinal section of said door check, and
Fig. 3, a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprising a tubular housing 4 open at one end but closed at its other end by means of a head or cap 5 having a perforated lug 6 thereon adapted to be pivotally secured to a bracket 7 on the under Side of an ordinary railway car vestibule trap door 8 as indicated. The trap door 8 is pivoted at 9 on a bracket 10 secured to the end of the car and whereby said trap door may be readily swung upwardly against said car end when it is desired to use the steps of the car.
A stem or rod 12 is arranged to operate within the housing 4, said stem being threaded for a considerable distance from its inner end and a cap 13 being threaded over the inner end of said stem. The ca 13 carries a piston 14 snugly fitting within the housing 4 to frictionally resist movement between said stem and housing. A second housing 15 is slidably fitted over the open end of housing 14 and the other end 16 of the housing is threaded on the stem 12 as shown. The housing 15 is provided with an air vent opening 17 and a sleeve'lS is imprisoned between the inner end of cap 13 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1922.
1920. Serial No. 397,523.
and the end of housing 16 to surround the stem 12 as shown. At its outer end the stem 12 is provided with an eye 19 arranged to be pivotally connected by means of a bolt 2() with the bracket 10. A removable threaded plug 21 is provided in the head 5 and by means of which a lubricant such as a heavy oil or grease may be introduced into the interior of the housing 4 and a suitable supply of lubricant is also introduced into the housing 15 before the parts are assembled. By this arrangement, it will be observed, that the movements of the trap door 8 will be adequately checked to prevent sudden shocks and jars. The operating parts will also be thoroughly and constantly lubricated and protected from the entry of dust or dirt. The specific form and arrangement of parts is a simple and efiicient one for the purpose, and provide a door check of the class described which is strong and durable in use, and capable of economical manufacture.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z- 1. A door check comprising a tubular housing; a threaded stem fitting into said housing; a piston adjustably threaded on said stem and operating in said housing; and a second housing mounted for movement with said stem and slidably fitting over said first mentioned housing, substantially as described.
2. A door check comprising` a tubular housing; a threaded stem fitting into said housing; means surrounding and threaded on the inner end of said stem; a piston on the inner end of said means operating in said housing; and a second housing adjustably mounted on said stem in engagement with said means and slidably fitting said first mentioned housing, substantially as described.
3. A door check comprising a tubular housing; a threaded stem fitting into said housing; a piston on the inner end of said stem operating in said housing; and a second housing threaded on said stern to move therewith and siidably iitting over said first mentioned housing, said second mentioned housing having an air vent opening therein, substantially as described.
4. A door check comprising a tubular housing open at one end and having a head ciosinggthe other end; a perforated lug on said head for pivotaliy connecting the same With the under side of the trap door; a removable threaded piug extending through said head and permitting of the introduction of lubricant into said housing; a threaded stem having an eye at its outer end for pivotally mounting the same, the inner end of said stem being arranged to project into said In testimony whereof. I have signed my name to this speciication in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
