MASSAGE AIPPARATUS. I
mamas.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4,1922.
Application filed November 4, 1921. Serial no. 512,715.
To all :whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES ARNAo, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident cation.
This invention relates to barbers apparatus. The object of the invention is to f'a cilitate the steaming of a customers face. A further object of the invention is to effect the steaming of a human face without the local application of steaming towels.
In general, it is purposed to provide a portable, face enclosing hood, suitably connected with a source of steam which. may conveniently be generated at will.
,A still further object of the invention is to provide for the application to a human face of the combined action of steam and therapeutic light.
The above will better be understood by reference to the illustrated embodiments of the invention to which the claims are directed merely for purposes of illustration and which are described in the following specification in connection with the accom- 'panying drawings which form a part hereof. In the drawings- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the entire apparatus with parts broken away;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary section, partly in diagram, of the hood and support;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section drawn to an enlarged scale of the steam generator and sup orting post;
*ig. 4 is a circuit diagram of the electric connections; and
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing a modification of the steam generator.
, A suitable portable stand A is provided, comprising the spider shaped base portion 1 mounted on casters 2 and a tubular upright standard 3 which serves as a conduit for the feeder cable 4: supplied from any suitable tap plug 5.
A bracket 6 is provided with the split clamp '2 which may be secured to the standard 3 by the clamp nut 8, although it is preferred that a ledge 9 be brazed to the standard 3 to serve as an additional support for the bracket 6. The bracket 6 provides an interior channel 10 for the electric wiring and also a pair of mounting ears 11 and 12 conveniently disk-shaped for mounting control switches 13 and 14. The platform 15 of the bracket serves as a mounting for a steam generator B which may conveniently take the form of a small boiler clamped to the platform 15 by screws 17 taking into angle irons 18 brazed to the boiler. An electric heater 19 secured up against the bottom 20 of the boiler supplies the necessary heat. It is preferred that a sight gauge 21 be provided when the boiler 16 is to contain all the water supply from which the steam is generated.
The standard 3 extends upwardly and a slip extension is bent out to form a suspension arm 22 from the hooked end 23 of which is supported an open-ended hood 24 adapted to envelope the human face, as indicated in Fig. 3. A flexible metal conduit 25 connects the steam generator B with the interior of the hood 24 near its closed end.
The closed end of the hood 24 is finished as a mirror 29 preferably parabolic to project the rays of the electric lamp 26 outwardly in the hood. The lamp 26 is suitably mounted in a socket 27 and is preferably provided with a shade 28 which is preferably of blue glass, although in its broadest aspect the lamp represents any source of radiant energy. The socket 27 may be controlled by the usual snap switch 30 and its leads are provided by the flexible cord 31 entering the standard 3 and extending down to the main switch 13, while the switch 1 1 independently controls the heater 19. Fig. 4 clearly indicates the circuit diagram showing how both legs of the main circuit are controlled by switch 13, while switch 14 controls both legs of the heater circuit and the snap switch 30 individually controls the lamp 36.
In the apparatus described. the boiler 16 of the steam generator B is filled with water to the desired level by the cap filler opening 4:0. The current is turned on and when in addition, increased stimulation of the skin is produced, possibly increased by the magnifying effect of the small moisture particles collecting on the skin from the condensed steam.
To the end that the generation of steam gaa in the apparatus be more instantaneous, it is contemplated that the filler cap 40 be removed and substituted by the nipple 400 forming a part of the funnel shaped reservoir 50 which connects with the interior of the boiler 16 by a short stem 51 controlled by an adjustable valve 52. With this arrangement the water 53 in the reservoir 50 may be allowed to drip upon the hot bottom of the boiler 16 to form steam instantaneously and in the amount required for the face treatment.
What I claim and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is 1. In a massage steamer, an open-ended hood for embracing the face; a steam sup.- ply connected with the interior of said hood; and a source of radiant energy within said hood for revitalizing the steam in its direct application to the face.
2. In massage apparatus in combination, a portable stand; an open-ended hood supported by said stand; a local steam generator mounted on said stand; a flexible steam conduit connecting said generatorand the interior of said hood; and an electric lamp mounted interiorly of said hood.
- 3. In massage apparatus in combination, a portable stand; an open-ended hood supported by said stand; a local steam generator. mounted on said stand; a flexible steam conduit connecting said generator and the interior of said hood; and an electric lamp mounted interiorly of said hood and electric circuits for independently controlling said steam generator and electric lamp.
4. In apparatus for treating the skin in combination, an open-ended hood; a source of; radiant energy for flooding the interior of said hood towards the open end thereof; a steam generator; and a conduit for connecting said steam generator with the interior of said hood.
mamas 5. The apparatus in combination as characterized in claim 4 and further characterized by the fact that means are provided for independently controlling the supply of radiant energy and steam.
6. The apparatus in combination as characterized in claim 4 and further characterized by the fact that said steam generator comprises a steam generating chamber and an auxiliary water feeding vessel for progressively charging said chamber with water.
7. The apparatus in combination as characterized in claim a and as further characterized in claims 7 and 8.
8. The apparatus in combinatiton as characterized in claim 4; and further characterized by the fact that the source of radiant energy is embodied in theform of an electric lamp mounted interiorly of said hood and is controllable exteriorly of said hood and further characterized by the fact that the source of heat for said steam generator is an electric resistance provided with exterior means for controlling the passage of electricity therethrough.
9. In a massage apparatus in combination, a face steaming .hood; a steam-generator comprising a boiler and an electric resistance unit; a steam conduit connecting said steam-generator and said hood; a portable stand mounting said hood and said steam generator; and an electric switch for controlling said resistance unit.
10. The apparatus described in claim 9 and further characterized by the fact that the portable stand comprises a vertically adjustable member for adjusting the position of the face steaming hood.
In witness whereof I have signed my name to this specification, this 20th day of September, 1921. a
