Description

Gfl. coLBunN. r NURSERY LABEL.
l Patented July 4,1922.
" APPLICATION FILED MAR.6, 1922.
NURSERY LABEL.
Application filed March G, 1922.
To all whom 'it may concern,
Be it known that l, GLEN l. CoLnUnN,
a citizen of the TJnited States, residing at Geneva, in the county of @ntario and State of` New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nursery Labels, of which the following is a specification.
rhis invention relates to labels or tags, particularly to those adapted for use by horticultural nurserymen, and has for its object the provision of a label or tag to be attached to trees, shrubs, or other plants and so constructed as to enclose direct-ions for planting and caring for the stock.
lt is a well known fact that the ordinary label or tag now in use by nurserymen in marking their trees, etc., consists merely of a small piece of wood having printed thereon the name of the plant, and the purchaser of a plant so marked, unless an experienced grower, has nothing to guide him in planting. Furthermore, it is the common practice of nurserymen to guarantee that their stock will live and the replacements they are forced to make on account of the nongrowth of the stock are a considerable item, and are necessitated largely by improper planting. A separate circular of instructions is not satisfactory, frequently inconvenient, and always liable to become confounded with other instructions.
It is with these facts in mind that the present invention has been designed with the purpose of providing a tag which could be made conveniently of oiled paper, or other suitable material, attachable to a plant, and carry the name of the plant and planting instructions; the paper being folded and enclosing the instructions, while displaying the name. Y lVith the object in view of providing such a tag which will be very simple and inexpensive, and convenient in use, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement to be hereinafter more fully described a nd claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of the tag ready for use,
Fig. 2 a side elevation thereof,
Fig. 3 an end view,
Fig. l a plan view of the tag torn off and opened to display the instructions, and
Fig. 5 a plan view 0f the tag unfolded.
'Specification of Letters Patent.
flat-vented July et, 1922.
Serial No. 541,360.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a sheet of suitable material, preferably oiled paper, provided at eachV end of its longitudinal axis with reinforced holes 2. On one side of the sheet is printed the name of the plant and a set of instructions 3 for planting. rlhe sheet 1 is folded back on itself longitudinally along the lines and 5, covering the instructions bearing side, and is then folded again transversely upon itself along the line G. The flaps 7, 8, 9, and l0 will then all be disposed upon each other and will be upon the inside of the tag with the panels 11 and 12 forming the outside. The sheet is perforated along the lines 13 and 14- so that when it is folded as described the tag will comprise t-he xed portion 15 and the detachable portion 16. lThe name of the plant is printed transversely across the fixed portion 15 of the panel 11 and longitudinally upon the detachable portion 1G. The detachable portion further bears the legend Tear off on dotted line. lanting oirections inside.
The tag is attached to a plant as by a wire 17 passed through the holes 2 and twisted and then twisted about a stalk of the plant in the usual manner. he legend instructs the purchaser to tear the tag along the dotted line. lhen this is done, the xed portion 15, bearing the name of the plant still remains in place as identification, and the portion 16, torn off, upon being` unfolded is seen to carry upon its reverse side full instructions for planting.
F rom the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that l have provided a tag enclosing instructions which is suitable for the use of horticultural nurserymen and of any others experiencing the need of an article of this character. and which is simple, cheap, and highly efficient.
llfhile l have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will of course be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement `of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim 1. le, tag comprising a sheet of material having its longitudinal sides folded inwardly, one side fiat upon the central portion of the sheet and the other side upon the first side7 the resultant strip .being folded transversely at its center with its ends brought together, said end portions be! ing provided With eyelets alining Wlien said folding is completed, said sheet being perforated along transverse lines alining when 'said lfolding is completedwvhereby a portion thereot1 may be detached.
2. A tag comprising a sheet of material perforated transversely adjacent its ends and bearinga legend on one side between said perforations andy the longitudinal edges` said sheet having its sides folded in- Wardly upon the central portion of the sheetis folded, the other side of the sheet being provided between the lines of longitudinal folding with indicia and adjacent one eyelet with corresponding indica, the
legendportion of tliersheet being detachable.
In testimony Whereofl hereto valix'lny signa-ture.
