3 SHEETSSHEET 3- CHARLES FISHER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
IVITACHINE FOR APPLYING A COVER OR BINDING .TO A CASING SECTION.
Specification of Letters Patent. P t t n 27, 1 22 Application filed May 5, 1921. Serial No. 467,0?9.
. to a casing-section which is adapted to form a part of a book-form safe.
It may be stated preliminarily that a savin s bank of the character here referred to is rnown as a library-safe, and comprises a casing-section which corresponds with one side, the back, and the edges of a book, and a closure which corresponds with theother side of a book.
The present machine is adapted to pre liminarily form the cover about a sheet metal member which is adapted to form one side and the back of the casing of the safe and to removably secure the sheet-metal member and the partiall folded cover to a removable die or holder.
This work is preliminary to lurther operations in another machine, into which the dieor holder, the attached sheet-metal member of the casing, and the cover may be in-- troduced, The primary object of the present invention is to provide simple and easily operated mechanismfor performing the preliminary operation referred to.
The invention is illustrated, in its preferred embodiment, in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 represents a side elevational view of a press embodying the invention, the die or holder being removed, and the-handle of the actuating lever of the plunger being broken away; Fig, 2, a plan view of the machine; the dotted lines indicating the position of the cover mentioned; Fig. 3, a broken perspective view, showing the die or holder inposition in the bed of the machine and showing a cover for a book-form safe properly positioned on the bed and extending across the die; Fig. 4,21 broken perspec-' tive View illustrating the prelimlnary folding of the cover about the casing-section, the
plunger being in the position which occupies while forcing the casing-section into the die and thus folding the cover about that portion of the casing-section which corresponds with the back of the book-form safe;
Fig. 5, a broken-perspective view illustratng the manner in which the back of the casing-section and the folded cover are secured to the die; Fig. 6, a perspective view of the holder or die employed; Fig. 7, a longitudinalsectional view of the die, the dotted lines indicating the position of thecasing-section; and Fig. 8, a transverse vertical section showing the plunger forcing the casing-sec-.
tion into the die and effecting the folding of the'flover about the back portion'of the casing-section.
In the construction illustrated, A represents the bed of a press which is provided w th a transverse slot or socket A for recelving adle, the bed of the press being further provided on its upper side with transverse ledges or gage members A and A and being also provided with lateral gage members A, these gage members being adapted. to position a flexible cover, which may be of leather or artificial leather, upon the bed-plate; B, standard which rises from the rear portion of the bed; and has a forwardly-curved arm equipped with a. guide B for the plunger C, a plunger working in said guide, said plunger being provided at its lower end with a transverse header bar C; and D, a lever mounted on the standard B andserving to actuate the plunger.
Removably mounted in the transverse slot or socket A of the bed of the press is a die or holder A This holder is shown in perspective in Fig. 6. It is adapted to be transferred to another press and to be mounted in different positions in such press to enable the binding operations to be completed. However, in the present press, the holder A is entered only in the position shown in Fig. 3, that is, in such position that its concave side will be turned upwardly and in position I form edge member which is of angle-form cross-section, this edge member,(not shown) corresponding with the edges of the leaves of a book. In completing thestructure of the device, the U-shape member of angleform cross-section has one flange turned inwardly and provided with perforations which receive the clenching lugs 1 The cover for the casing, which may be of leather, artificial leather, or other suitable fabric, is designated 2. It has its corners cut away and provided with corner-tabs 2, as shown in Fig. 3. The marginal portions of the cover are provided with perforations or recesses 2 which are adapted to receive or engage the brads or clenching lugs 1 of the casing-section, after such margins have been folded over the edges of the sheet-metal member.
The die or holder A comprises a metal bar 3 which has its upper side provided with a longitudinal concavity 3 which is adapt ed to receive the rounded back 1 of the casing-section; and a pair of clamping-slides 4 movable in longitudinal guides 5 with which the bar is equipped at its ends. The clamping-slides 4: have their inner ends made concave-convex in cross-section, thus providing comparativey sharp curved edges 5 which are adapted to fold the central portions of the projecting margins of the cover designated 2 (see Fig. 4.) inwardly over the inner surfaces of the end portions of the curved back 1*, it being understood that the material is first preliminarily tucked in by the operator, and that the slides 4 are then shoved inwardly to complete the folding operation and clamp the casing-section and the cover to the die or holder A as shown in Fig. 5. The slides 4 are equipped near their inner ends with studs 4* for limiting the outward movement of the slides and are equipped at their outer ends with thumb pieces 4* by means of which the slides may be actuated. It will be noted from Fig. 7 that the bottom of the recess 3 is slightly below the plane of the bottoms of the slides 5*, so that the slides can move over the metal of the casing-back and the infolded tucks 2.
The bar 3 is equipped at one side near its ends with blocks 3 which are adapted to engage the lateral edges of the bed-plate A when theholder or die is in position, as shown in 'Fig. 8. These blocks are shown equipped with studs 3, which serve a function, when the holder A is employed in the other machine referred to, but which possesses no function in the present machinehe bed-plate A is equipped at its lateral edges with studs 6, the function of which is to prevent the die or holder A from being entered improperly in the socket A.
The operative-portion or transversely elongated head C of the plunger is provided at its front side with vertical slots 7 which are so positioned as to accommodate the clenching lugs 1 when the plunger moves downwardly, so as to engage the inner surface of the back portion 1 of the casingbe forced into the recess 3 of the die or holder 31 while the plate 1 occupies a standing position in front of the plunger. The cover-section may be centered by causing the lugs 1 to register with the slots 7 of the plunger. The operator then depresses the plunger and thus forces the back-portion of the casing-section into the groove 3 of the die, thus folding the cover about the back l While the plunger is held in depressed position, the operator folds the tucks 2 in-.
wardly over the inner surfaces of the backportion 1" and moves the slides 4 inwardly, thus clamping the back-portion of the casingsection and the intermediate portion of the cover to the die or holder. The plunger is then retracted and the holder is taken from the press and transferred to another machine,
which is capable of performing further operations and completing the construction of the safe.
The other machine referred to forms the subject-matter of my copending application No. 467,703, filed in the United States Patent ()ffice of even date herewith.
From the description given, it will be understood that the present invention embodies means for expeditiously forming a cover about the back portion of a casingsection and clamping the casing-section and cover to a holder or die which is capable of being used in another press for completing the construction of the safe.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible in view of the prior art.
