Description

F. BENTN.
PI-uws.
Patented August 26, 18.73. I
illrlvrrnn STATES ATENT OFFICE. I
JAMES F. BENTON, OF PENN YAN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,074, dated August 26, 1873; application filed December 5, 1872.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known' that I, JAMES F. BENTON, of Penn Yan, in the county of Yates and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specifica-tion:
`My invention relates to constructing and attaching to any ordinary plow an adjustable regulating-sole that will regulate the depth of furrow made by the plow, and allow the plowshare tobe made with more pitch in the point to increase the durability; and by raising the sole as the share is Worn the plow will work uniformly into the soil while the share is being worn. i
Figure 1 is a land-side elevation; Fig. 2, a longitudinal. section, showin g4 the sole attached. v
A is the plow. It .may be constructed in any ordinary manner, with wood or iron beam, and may have the ordinary plowshare; or the point ofthe share may have more pitch, if desired. The only deviation from the ordinary construction is placing the bolts of the plow in such manner as not to be in the way of the sole, and making holes in the 1and-side part for the necessary bolts to hold the sole in itsproper position. B is theu sole. Its shape and position are shown in Fig. 2. It may be made any length, size, or shape, to suit the various kind of plows to which it may bc applied. It may be made in shape as represented in Fig.
enters a slot inthe land-side portion ofthe plow. The forward end` is turned upward, as
shown in the figure, and near the middle of the upper surface is an angular projection that has a slot for the bolt that holds it. The projection inclines backward for the purpose of moving the sole forward when it is lowered. The Obliquity of the angle of the projection should nearly correspond with the inner angle of the forward part of the plow to which it is applied. The forward end should be made as wide at the under side as the plow will admit, and must be shaped to suit the various kinds of plows it is applied to. The bolt that holds it may be put through ythe whole of the landside portion, or may be put through a part only.
To use my invention when the plowshare is new, lower the sole by loosening the bolt that holds it, and lower it until the plow will cut the depth of furrow required, and, as the share becomes worn, raise the sole, and thus continue until the share vis worn out; then put on a new one, and repeat as before; and in most all kinds of soil the sole will obviate the use of the wheel on the end of the plowubeam, and, when transporting the plow about the farm, lower the sole, so that the point of the share cannot enter the ground, and the plow may be drawn anywhere with perfect ease.
1 claim- The adjustable sole B, when pivoted to the rear end of the land-side and secured by the slotted stud, as described.
JAMES F. BENTON.
