To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, KARL Marian, residing at 10Gb Rotebiihlstrasse, Stuttgart, in the Kingdom of .T'Vurttemberg, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chain-Stitch hlachines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to chain stitch machines and more especially to the type pro vided with a side-ways oscillating needle shaft guide designed to produce an ornamental zigzag stitch. Tl e particular object of my invention is to provide a machine of this type with means for producing such stitches in a zigzag line or a curved line and moreover edge ornamentations with the warp exposed in certain places.
According to the present invention this result is obtained by causing the oscillation of the needle shaft guide spoken of to be combined, by aid of a special actuating mechanism, with a sideways oscillation in a different direction.
A chain stitch machine embodying the preferred form of my invention is shown in the drawings accompanying this specification and forming part thereof,

Referring to Figs. 1 to 5 of the drawings, 25 is the needle shaft guide surrounding the needle shaft 23, said guide being adapted to oscillate about a vertical axle 437 under the influence of a link 22 and a lever 10. The lever oscillates about an axle 29 and has its free arm l guided by aid of a roller 5 in the slot of a cam cylinder 7.
Now the axle 29 itself is arranged on the arm 39 of an angle lever 35 disposed on the stationary arm 37 so as to be free to oscillate about the verticalaxle 36, its free arm being guided, by means of roller 38, in the slot 34- of the cam cylinder 33. The said cylinder is removably connected by a screw e2 with a toothed wheel 32, both being arranged on the axle 41 carried by the stationary arm 10. Toothed wheel 32 is in gear with another toothed wheel 31 connected with cam cylinder 7, the cam slot 6 of this cylinder being formed so as to cause the needle shaft guide 25 to oscillate to and fro at each stitch a like distance, a simple row of zigzag stitches being thus formed.
Owing to the tooth gear 31, 82 the cam cylinder 33 rotates, say ten times more slowly than the cylinder 7, and the form of the cam slot 34 is such that the needle shaft guide 25 is gradually moved step by step to one side. After say the tenth stitch the guide 25 starts again moving to the other side and after the twentieth stitch its return begins. Under the simultaneous influence of the cam slots 6 and 34 exerted upon the needle shaft guide 25 a curve shaped zigzag stitch line is produced.
I By providing a cutting device arranged to follow the sideways movements of the second actuating mechanism for the needle shaft guide 25 and to cut off the material next to, the stitches a beautiful edge border may be produced.
' The cutting device as shown in Figs. 4L- and 5 is fixed to the lower part of the needle shaft guide axle 47 and follows its movements. The cutters are arranged close to the needle and move with it sideways of the feeding mechanism sothat curved cutting edges are formed alongside the stitches.
The carrier of the cutting mechanism consists of the arm 4-6 and axle e8 having the cutting lever 51 fixed to it and the front arm 57 carrying the stationary knife 58. Lever 51 carrying the oscillating cutter is actuated by the eccentric disposed on the main crank shaft and is connected with it by the bearing 5-1 and ball screw 53. The upper cutter is pressed sideways against the lower cutter by a spring 50 held by a screw 49 and pressing against the axle of lever 51.
' The stitch formed by aid of the needle and looper is the well known double chain stitch, but other kinds of stitches may be produced as well.
It will be obvious from the above description that the needle thread 412 and the looper thread 43 concatenate to form a two thread double chain stitch ie. It is understood that variations in the character of the stitch may be made by changing the cam cylinders.
The new machine is therefore adapted for the production of various kinds of ornamental stitches, and various beautiful forms may be given to such stitches by correspondingly varying the shape of the cam slots and the ratio of gearing (81, 32).
In the modification shown in Figs. 6 to 8 the machine is further improved by providing a looper controlled in a manner similar to that of the needle shaft so as to follow its oscillations.
Referring to Figs. 6, 7 and 8, the needle shaft guide 25 is actuated by means of a cam slot 34, lever 35 and axle 36, as before. The axle further carries a lever 59 connected with lever 60 and axle 61. To the other end of axle 61 there is fixed a lever 62 having pivoted to it a link 63 connecting it with the toggle lever joint of the connecting rod in two parts 64, 65 actuating the looper. The joint aforesaid is adapted to be lifted from the position shown in the drawing into straight position, the path of oscillation of the looper 66 being thereby displaced some degrees to the left, when the lever 59 is carrying out a corresponding movement of oscillation. By pulling the connecting rod joint downwards again the path of oscillation in displaced to the right.
The displacing of the path of oscillation takes place by means of axle 36, while the machine is running at full speed, and in unison with the corresponding oscillations of the needle shaft guide. The distance of displacement to the left of the needle and guide corresponds to the distance of displacement of the looper.
This enables the needle to pass the thread eye of the looper always at the same distance and ensures a perfect sewing in spite of the permanent sideways displacement of the needle.
As a matter of course the single elements for operating the looper may be replaced by their equivalents, provided only that in each case the looper is imparted an additional movement closely adapted to the oscillations of the needle-shaft guide.
I claim 1. A chain stitch sewing machine including in combination, a needle bar, a needle carried thereby, a guiding frame for the needle bar supported to swing on a vertical axis, a looper co-operating with said needle, toggle links for oscillating said looper into and out of the needle loop, cam mechanism connected to the needle bar guiding frame for shifting the needle bar laterally, said cam mechanism being. connected to said toggle links for shifting said links into and out of alinement, whereby the oscillating position of the looper is shifted to correspond to the shifted position of the needle.
2. A chain stitch sewing machine including in combination, a needle bar, a needle carried thereby, a guiding frame for the needle bar supported to swing on a vertical axis, a looper co-operating with the needle, toggle links for oscillating said looper into and out of the needle loop, a rotating cam, a vertically disposed shaft, means for rocking said shaft from said cam, and means controlled by said rocking shaft for shifting the osition of the needle guiding frame and for moving said toggle links toward and from alinement, whereby the needle is shifted laterally and the oscillating position of the looper is varied to correspond with the position of the needle.

A chain stitch sewing machine including in combination, a needle bar, a needle carried thereby, a guiding frame for the needle bar supported to swingon a vertical axis, a looper, a looper support on which said looper is pivoted, means for oscillating said looper on said support including toggle links, a vertically disposed shaft, a main shaft, a cam cylinder actuated from said main shaft, a lever connected to the needle bar guiding frame oscillated by said cam cylinder, an arm carried by the vertical shaft and supporting said lever, a second cam cylinder connected to said arm for oscillating the vertical shaft, connections between said vertical shaft and the toggle links for moving said toggle links toward and from alinement, whereby the oscillation of said vertical shaft shifts the oscillating position of the lever and thereby the position of the needle guiding frame and also shifts the looper so as to maintain its co-operative position with the needle.

A chain stitch sewing machine including in combination, a needle bar, a needle carried thereby, a guiding frame for the needle bar supported to swing on a vertical axis, a vertically disposed shaft, an arm carried by the shaft, a cam cylinder having connection with said arm for oscillating the same, a second cam cylinder, a main shaft geared to said second cam cylinder and gearing connections between said second cam cylinder and the first named cam cylinder, a lever mounted on the arm and connected to the needle bar guiding frame, said lever having connection with the second cam cylinder for oscillating said lever, and a looper co-operating with the needle.

A chain stitch sewing machine including in combination, a needle bar, a needle carried thereby, a guiding frame for the needle bar supported to swing on a vertical axis, a vertically disposed shaft, an arm carried by the shaft, a cam cylinder having connection with said arm for oscillating the same, a second cam cylinder, a main shaft geared to said second cam cylinder and gearing connections between said second cam cylinder and the first named cam cylinder, a lever mounted on the arm and connected to the needle bar guiding frame, said lever hav-: ing connection with the second cam cylinder for oscillating said lever, a looper co-operating with the needle, toggle links for oscillating said looper into and out of the needle loop, a horizontally disposed shaft, an arm carried thereby, a link connecting said arm to the connection between the toggle links, and means operated by the vertical shaft for oscillating the horizontal shaft for shifting the toggle links toward and from alinement,
whereby the looper is shifted bodily to maintain its eo-operative position relative to the needle.
6. A chain stitch sewing machine including in combination a needle bar, a needle carried thereby, a guide frame for the needle bar supported to move laterally, a looper cooperating with the needle, toggle links for oscillating the looper into and out of the needle thread loop, and mechanism for shifting the needle bar guiding frame laterally and for shifting the toggle links toward and from alinement whereby the oscillating position of the looper is shifted to correspond to the shifted position of the needle.
