T 0 all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, LoUrs M. SINGER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of 154 Simcoe St., in the city of Toronto, county of York, Province of Qin-.1 tario, in the Dominion of Canada, have 1n- -novel features of. construction whereby impact receiving members adapted for independent .use or in conjunction with the horizontal bumper are vertically arranged 1n relation to the vehicle.
The objects of the invention are to provide one or more members capable of resisting impact delivered above or below the posi-y tion occupied by the ordinary bumper, to provide a backing for the horizontal bumper, and generally to provide `a bumper which will be inexpensive of construction, simple of adjustment, efficient in operation and durable.
ln the drawings Figure-1 is a perspective view showing a bumper bracket secured to the forward end of the vehicle frame and carrying horizontal and vertical impact receivinglmembers, a portion of the horizontal member being broken away.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing a vertical impact receiving member secured Figure 3 is a perspective view of the vertical impact receiving member.
Figure 4 is a perspectiveview showing a bracket carrying a horizontal impact receiving member and a vertical impact receiving member-of modified construction.
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing the form of vertical impact receiving member shown in Figure 4 secured to the bracket.
Figure 6 isa vperspective view of the im` pact receiving member shown in Figure 5.
Figure 7 is` a perspective view of the bracket.
Like numerals of reference indicate corre.-
sponding parts in the various figures.
Referring to the drawings 1 arethe supporting brackets, of which there are preferably two, each consisting of a metal strap shaped to follow the contour of the frame 2 .Specificationv of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 31, 1921. Serial No. 511,622.
and having its lower end 3 curved to receive the substantially pointed front end of said l frame and beingv adapted to be secured to said frame in any desired manner, said strap' being provided with a forwardly projectin horizontal head 4 presenting an enlarge flat face 5 pierced to provide bolt openings 6 located above and below said head and having outwardly projecting side flanges l and 8, the fiange 7 located on the outer side of the bracket preferably being equal in length to the thickness of a bumper bar while the flange 8 is of considerably greater length. 9 are impact receiving members, veach comprising a flat outer portion having its ends turnedbackwardly in special relation to said flat portion and provided with bolt openin@ 10 adapted to register with the openings 6 in the faces of the brackets for the reception of the threaded ends 11 of substantially U shaped bolts 12 employed to' rigidly secure said impact receiving membersI to the respective brackets.y
Where it is desirable to use both the verti-` cal and horizontal forms of impact receiving members the backwardly turned ends 13 of said' horizontal members are' inserted between the bolts 12 and the pierced ends of said vertical members, the flanges 8 forming stops to prevent longitudinal movement of said horizontal member. It will thus be apparent that as the impact receiving portion of the horizontal bar is .positioned in advance of the impact receivlng portion of the. vertical member said vertical member constitutes a resilient backing for said horizontal member as well as constituting a means for receivin impact delivered above or below said horizontal mem#A ber. l
lin Figures 4, 5 and 6 a modified form of vertical impact receiving member is shown, said member being in the form of a straight bar 14 provided with bolt'openings 15 adapted to register with the openings 6 in the faces of the supporting brackets and to be secured in position'by meansY of the U bolts l1.2. The ends of the bars 14 may be rounded as indicated by the numeral 16 or may be square, as desired.l
Where the horizontal bar is to be incorporated with the vertical bar, the ends l@ .of said horizontal bar are simply inserted between the bolts 12 and the vertical bar and said bolts tightened by means of the nuts 17.
p ylf desirable where the vertical bars 14 are uV j pact delivered above or below the-horizontal bars and also form a backing for the horizontal bar in cases where the blow received by said horizontal bar is very severe. What I claim is 1. ln a vehicle bumper, the combination with the projecting channel portions of thevehicle frame, of bumper supports each comprising a base adapted to be secured in rigid engagement with the top side of a channel portion and having a hook end projecting around the outer ends of said projection, and forward extensions terminating in vertical ilat faces provided with bolt openings therethrough, and vertical impact receiving members adapted to be secured in engagement with said faces.
2. ln a vehicle bumper, the combination with the projectin channel portions of the vehicle frame, of umper supports having base portions 'itting varound the forward ends respectively of said projections and having forward extensions terminating in :flat vertical faces, said faces being provided with forwardly projecting side flanges, vertical impact receiving members abutting said faces respectively, a horizontal impact receiving member having backwardly folded ends engaging sald vertical impact re- Leraars 3. ln a vehicle bumper, in combination,
bumper supports having forward projections terminating in flat vertical vfaces, bumpers comprising vertically arranged bars having backwardly turned meetmg ends abutting said faces respectively, a horizontal impact receiving member having backwardly folded ends engaging the backwardly turned ends of said vertical impact receiving members, and fastening members extending through openings in the ends of said vertical impact receiving members and said faces and locking said horizontal im pact receiving member to its position.
d. In a vehicle bumper, in combination,
bumper supports, a horizontal impact. re
ceiving member having backwardly turned ends secured to said supports, auxiliary bumpers comprising vertlcally arranged bars 'positioned to the rear oi said horizontal impact receiving member and free of. engagement therewith and having backwardly turned ends engaging the ends of said horizontal bar, and means for securing the ends of said'bars to said supports.
Signed atthe city of rlloronto, this 21st day of October 1921.
' LUUS SINGER.
