adapted to be employed in connection with` ventilators, skylights or other structures wherein movably mounted` sashes are'V employedand designed to bequickly opened or closed as the occasion demands.
The invention is an improvement upon the form of device or mechanism shown and described in my Patent No. 1,320,568 of November 4, 19119, and an object ofthe invention is to provide a positive means which will satisfactorily meet the requirements of statutes and municipal ordinances for automatically controlling theV ventilator or skylight of a building or theatre at the time of lire and establish a vent or outlet for smoke and flames and producea draft which will cause thcvsmoke and flainesto be conducted: from the auditorium.
Another object of the invention is to provide a ventilator or skylight embodying a ,plurality of weight actuated sashes and a thermallyy actuated means therefor which will operate to positively cause at leastone oi' more of the sashesto openl automatically atthe time of the lire.

The means for normally holding the several sashes closed embodies a cross bar 21 located in the frame 5 intermediate between the upper and lower ends of the sash openings 11 and rising therefrom and secured at its upper end to the rib 22 of the frame 5 is a iixed vertical standard 23 on which a runner 24 is free to slide. From each one of the swinging sashes 12 is extended a cord or controlling connection 25, attached at its inner end to said runner. ln each of said cords is a fusible link 26 of any well known construction so that on its destruction, the sash with which it is associated, will open instantly under the force of the weight 18 and action of the links 16 and 17. The leverage action of the link 17 against its sash is such that a relatively small weight will satisfactorily spend its force to open a relatively heavy sash. 'lfhe links 16 and 17 are also arranged. to mutu- .f ally serve as a stop to limit the opening movement of the sash. The runner has connection with a manually actuated rope 27 which passes over a suitable guide pulley 28 and extended to the stage or pronipters desk where it can be quickly had when wanted. This arrangement permits the sashes to be opened for ordinary Ventilating purposes when desired. While l have stated that the connections 25 are of cord, it follows that this is only necessary to assure the fullest measure of safety of operation of the structure. Metal cables could be used but cords are preferred in view of their flexibility and the fact that should the fusible link 26 by any chance fail to operate at the requisite moment, the cord will be destroyed by the action of the flame itself.
In Figure 3, 28 represents a manually actuated connection similar to 27 in the first form of my invention. A thermally responsive device 29 is arranged in said connection and the saine consists of a lever 30 with which the branch 31 of the connection is secured. A second lever 32 is pivoted to the lower end of the lever 30 so that a crotch 33 is produced between both levers for the reception of the cross pin 34 of a bail 35, the latter carried by the branch 1a of said connection 28. The lever 32 extends upward from the base of the lever 30 and at an angle thereto so that the crotch 88 is of substantially V-form. The levers 30 and 32, are provided with rows of perforations 34 and 35 respectively and fusible links of the type shown at 36 may be connected with a set of two of such perforations in respective levers. The construction offers a means whereby the levers 30 and 32 are capable of sustaining relatively different loads, it be f ing understood that the power of the levers increases in a direction away from the pivotal point between said levers and as the link fuses, the lever 32 turns on its pivot to instantly eject the bail 35. ln this form, it is not necessary that each of the sash cords 25 be provided with a. fusible link.
In Figure 1, the link 17 u of the sash opening mechanism 14a is formed of sections 17b and 17, a sliding rod 17d having connection between said sections. The ends of the rod pass into openings 17e in said sections 17b and 17c and the same are headed at 17f. Heavy cushioning springs 17g are interposed between the heads 17 f and the cross bars 17h of the link sections so that said sections will separate against the action of the springs and absorb the shocks and jars on the open* in of the sash.
7Vhile I have described that weights 18 are preferred so that the sashes will open quickly, l find that when the links are formed of material, the weight of'which is properly calculated with regard to the weight and resistance offered by the sashes, the latter open freely and said weights may be entirely eliminated. This is due to the manner of connecting the links 1G and 17 together and their connection with lthe said sashes 12 and frame 5.
lihat l claim as my invention is:
1. A structure having an opening, a sash movable over said opening, a pair of weighted sash moving links between the sash and the structure, a fusible device for holding thel sash closed against the action of said links and means included in the links for cushioning the movement 0f the sash, said links pivoted together and one of said links having pivotal connection with the structure above the said opening, and the other of said links having pivotal connection with the said sash. i
2. A thermally actuated sash operating mechanism including a frame having an opening and a sashv movable over said opening, a travelling runner, a flexible connec* tion between the runner and the sash for moving the latter, means for manually actuating the ruimer, a fusible link in said connection, and means for exerting an opening influence against the sash on destruction of the fusible link or on manual operation of said connection through said runner, said opening means comprising a normally horizontally disposed link pivoted to the frame above the opening and a normally inclined link pivoted at one end to said rst named link and at its opposite end to the sash.
3. A structure including a frame having an opening therein, a sash pivoted in said opening, means for holding the sash in a closed position, and a plurality of links pivoted together and respectively pivoted to the sash and to said frame, and normally disposed with relation to the pivot of the sash so that when the holding means is released, the combined weight of said links will act against said sash to open the same.
4f. In a sash operating mechanism, a frame having vertical portions with openings therein, swingingsashes mounted on the frame and associated with the aforesaid openings to normally close same, an opening means for each of said sashes, said means comprising a link pivoted at its outer end to the frame and a second link inclined with relation to the irst named link and having its upper end pivoted thereto and its lower end pivoted to the sash, the links serving in their act of straightening relatively, to apply their force against the sash and give a starting movement thereto in a direction to uncover the mating opening, and means for moving the sashes simultaneously to closed positions, said moving means serving to normally hold the sashes closed against the action of their aforesaid opening means.
5. In a sash operating mechanism, a frame having vertical portions with openthe first named link and having its upper n end pivoted thereto and its lower end pivoted to the sash, the links serving in their act of straightening relatively, to apply their orce against the sash and give a starting movement thereto in a direction to uncover the mating opening, and means for moving the sashes simultaneously to closed positions, said moving means serving to normally hold the sashes closed against the action of their aforesaid opening means, the links further serving when straightened relatively to limit the opening movement of their respective sash.
