2 SHEETS-SHEET2Q UNITED ARTHUR OSKAR LEONARD WENNERBY, OF HALZMZS'I'AR: SWEDEN.,
TWO OR'MULTI CYLINDER INTERNAL-CO1VIBUSTION ENGINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR OSKAR LEONARD WVENNE BY, a citizen of Sweden, residing at Halmstad, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improve-i ments in Two or Multi Cylinder Internal- Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
The present invention relates'to a compressor for twoor multi-cylinder internal combustion ei'ig'ines, especially high-speed] two stroke cycle engines and the essential characteristical feature of the invention is that a compression cylinder is provided between two or more adjacent working cylinders coacting with the same in such a way that combustion air of a certain pressure at the right time will be introduced by the same into both cylinders.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanyin drawing in which Fig. 1 shows a two-cylinder two stroke cycle engine in a vertical section parallel to the crank shaft. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the compression cylinder perpendicular to the crank shaft.
I 1 indicates the crank shaft, 2 and 3 the two working cylinders provided with the pistons 4 and 5. According to the invention a compression cylinder 6 isarranged be tween the two working cylinders said compression cylinder being provided with a hollow piston 7 having at one of its sides an opening 8 of such a length that the interior of the piston 7 by means of a port 9 in the cylinder wall opposite said opening always communicates with the open air (Fig. 2). The opening, however, is disposed in such a way that the compression chambers be tween the cylinder bottoms and the piston heads never directly communicate with the open air. The products of combustion are blown out through the openings 10 in the walls. of the working cylinders in a manner well known in two stroke cycle engines, and these openings are covered by the working pistons when in their lower positions, as shown at the left part of Fig. 1.
A hollow member 11 serves as upper cover for all the cylinders said member communieating with the upper part of the working cylinders by means of passages 12 concentrically arranged around the fuel injecting nozzle. The passages 12 may be closed by means of a valve 14 arranged as a sleeve Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 6., 19%2.
Application filed January 80, 1922. Serial No. 532,880.-
surrounding the fuel injecting nozzle and made to slide longitudinally in relation to the latter, said valve being pressed into closing position by means of a spring 13.
The valve carries at its centre a screen 15 4 a reciprocating motion from the crank shaft 1 by means of an eccentric 17 or in any other similar manner. Besides by the covers 11 and 16 the compression cylinder 6 is covered by valve seats 18 and 19 at the' upper and lower ends and between the lower valve seat 19 and the cylinder cover 16 a chamber 20 is provided which permanently communicates with the interior of the cover 11 by means of side passages 21 arranged around the compressor cylinder. In the seat 18 valves 22 are provided'which are to be opened only towards the interior of the cover 11 but are closed automatically in the opposite direction. Similar valves 23 are to be found in the seat 19 and these valves can only be opened towards the chamber 20 and the passages 21. In the end faces of the compressor piston similar valves 24 and 25 are provided which open in the same direction as the valves in the adjacent bottom 18 or 19.
Thus the compressor is double acting as the piston on its downward stroke compresses the air at its under side and blows it through the valves 23 and the passages 21 to the hollow cylinder cover 11 and when moving upwards it compresses the air on the upper side and blows it through the valves 22 into the said hollow cylinder cover. At the same time as compression takes place at the under side of the piston, suction is effected through the passage 9 and the valves 24 to the space above the piston, and at the same time as the compression at the upper side of the pistonsuction takes place through the passage 9 and the valves 25 into the space below the piston. The compression pressure acts always upon the valves 14 but it is un able to open these against the pressure in the working cylinders, until the pistons in said cylinders reach their lower positions, when the cylinders are scavenged by the opening of the valves and fresh combustion air is introduced. Subsequently when the working pistons move upwards and. immediately after the closing of the openings 10 the valves 14: are closed again by the compression brought forth in the working cylinder, the fuel is injected and compressed together with the air and it is ignited either automatically at the injection or in any other way, whereafter the working pistons make a new working stroke etc.
According to the invention described a supply of compressed air is always at hand in the hollow cylinder cover 11 and this supply is suflicient to feed two or more cyl inders. Thus the necessary compressor is essentially simplified at the same time as the necessary valve constructions in the manner described above also are much simplified.
Having thus fully described my said in vention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. Compression and fuel spraying device for internal combustion engines having more than one working cylinder comprising a double acting compression cylinder arranged between the working cylinders and provided with a piston driven from the crank shaft of the engine with the same speed as the working pistons, valves arranged at the opposite ends of the compres sion cylinder and connecting both of said ends with a common compression chamber for all of the working cylinders, a common cover at the outer ends of all of the cylinders forming the compression chamber, said chamber enclosing as well valves for the introduction of the compressed air and nozzles for introduction of fuel into the working cylinders.
2. Compression and fuel spraying device for internal combustion engines having more than one cylinder comprising a double acting compression pump having its cylinder arranged between two adjacent work ing cylinders; a piston arranged in the firstmentioned cylinder and driven from the crank shaft of the engine with the same speed the working pistons, valves arranged at both ends'of the pump cylinder and connecting said ends with a com-men compression chamber for all of the working cylinders, a common cover arranged atthe other ends of all of the cylinders and forming the compression chamber, said chamber surrounding as well the fuel nozzles and valves for introducing the compressed air into the working cylinders and the latter being carried out in the form of sleeves sur-
