To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, umen J. CoLLINs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Grinding Machine, of which. the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to-new and useful improvements in grinding machines, and it pertains more particularly to a machine especially adapted for the grinding of valves of internal combustion motors.
It is one of the objects of the invention to provide in combination with a grinding element, means for supporting the valve to be ground in grinding contact with said grinding element.
It is another object of the invention to' provide. means whereby the valve to be ground may be adjusted relatively to the grinding element in order that seats of varr ous angles may be ground upon the valve.
It is a further object of the inventionjto provide means whereby the valve and the valve seat of an internal combustion motor or similarmachine may be ground by use of the same device and have contacting seats of different angles.
It is a further object of the invention to provide means whereby the valve being; ground may be moved in opposite directions across the grinding element in contact therewith at the will of the operator.
t is a still further object of the invention to provide meaus'in combination with the feeding means of the valve to constantly rotate the valve during the grinding operation.
With the above and other objects in view, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in vvhich .Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a machine constructed in accordance with the present invention;

Suitably mounted on these guide rods 14 is a carriage or table 15, and de vending from said table 15 is a pair of spaced lugs 16, extending downwardly be- In order to provide for slidably mounting the table 15 on the guide rods 14, the table is provided at diametrically opposite points with guides or the like 17 through which the rods 14 pass.
Referring to Fig. 3 it will be apparent that the table 15 is hollowed out as indicated by the reference character 18, and mounted in said hollowed out portion 18 is a bevel gear 19. This bevel gear 19 is carried upon a vertical shaft 20 mounted in a bearing 21 in the table 15, and carried upon the lower end of said shaft 20, is a bevel gear 22. a
The forward end of the base 10 is provided with a lug 25, and said lug 25 is internally" screw-threaded. Passing through the lug 25 and having threaded engagement therewith, is a shaft 26, said shaft being threaded as indicated by the reference char acter 27. The outer end of this shaft 26 is squared as at 28 to provide for the attachment of an operating handle 29.
The reference character 30 designates a bevel gear mounted upon the shaft 26, and this bevel gear 30 meshes with the bevel gear 22 on the lower end of the shaft 20. As more clearly shown in Fig. 5, the bevel gear 30 is rigidly carried by a sleeve 81 and said sleeve is adapted to be secured to the shaft 26 by means of a set screw 27*. When this set screw 27 is loosened, the shaft 26 is free to rotate within the sleeve 31 for a purpose to be hereinafter more specifically described. This sleeve 31 heretofore mentioned is mounted between the depending lugs 16 of the table 15 and the shaft 26 is extended beyond said lugs and mounted in a transverse partition or brace 34.

To permit of roifiairy movement of the platform 40, it is -ly necessary to back the plug 4:4; our of its recess and out of engagement with the (dog 43 This action provides a space at the forward portion of the recess into whicl'i the dog 42 is free to move upon rosary movement of the platform 40. As the dog .42 moves ,into this'space the platform is free to rotate since the dog has been disengaged from the 'angulangroove.
Mounted in the bearing 41 heretofore mentioned. is a chuck and said chuclr comprises an inner resilient member 47 screw threaded as at 48 and engaged by a sleeve 49, said sleeve being scri'nvlhreaded as at 50. The outer end of the sleeve is squared as at 51. to provide means by which it may be engaged by a wrench to rotate the sleeve 49 and cause a retraction oi; the resilient member at? to grip about the stem of a valve 52. Surrounding the sleeve 49 is a sleeve 63, and carried by the sleeve 53 is a bevel gear 54, which meshes with the bevel gear 19. By this construction it will be seen that as the bevel gear ll) is rotated, the sleeve F1 will be rotated through the me (hum of the gear 5% and the valve 52 carr ed by the resilient member 4;? ol the chuck will likewise be rotared.

From the foregoing eonstrucl'ion it is apparent that (the valve 52 carried by the chuck in addition to being: robot-ably niouut ed, is capable of movement relative to the base ill, to move the valve across the face oi the grinding wheel 71'.

Upon the opposite end of the base 10, a plurality of lugs 76 are formed and slidably mounted in said lugs are guide rods 71. These guiderods 71. support a table or base 72, and mounted upon saidbase 72 is a motor 73. This base 72 is provided with threaded depending lugs 74 and engaging therewith is a threaded shaft 75 operated by a handle 76. By this construction it is apparent that upon rotation of the handle 76, the motor 73 will be moved transversely of the base 10. owing to the threaded. engagement of the shaft 75 with the threaded lugs M. The valve 51 is positioned within the chuck in the above-described manner, after which the screw-threaded plug 44 is backed out of its screw-threaded recess to permit of rotary movement of the platform 40 relagive to the table 15. When this platform 4E0 has been properly adiusted, which adjustment will be indicated by the scale 100 shown in Fig. 4, the screw-threaded plug 45 is forced inwardly of its recess and the dog 4.2 engaged with the annular groove 43 in the platform 40. By this means it isapparent that the proper angular adjustment of the valve 52 relative to the grinding wheel 77 is had. The motor 73 is. now start ed and the grinding wheel 77 is rotated.

From the foregoing it is apparent that when the learner is ground, the teeth or cutting edges chereof will correspond do the angle oilihe face of the valve and when the seat with which the valve is adapted to engage has been faced by said reamer, the angle of the face of the valve and the seat with which it is adapted to engage will coincide.
