To will whom '52: may concern Be it known that l, BERT Ur. llnonnrr, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvex'nents in Handle Extensions, of which the followingis a specification.

' This invention rel-ates to a handle-extending 'or lengthening device more particularly designed to be readily applied to the operating handle on the door of some types of automobiles, but which may be applied to any other operating handle to which it is adapted to be applied. for the purpose of extending the length or rendering more convenient the operation thereof; and the object of this invention is to provide a shank having a head at one end and a socket at its opposite end shaped to receive the end of the handle it is designed to lengthen. means being provided in the socket portion of the device for locking it to the handle to which it is applied.

l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 1 is a perspective view indicating the door of an automobile to the latch handle of which my device is shown as being connected.

011 some cars it is found that the latch handle is constructed of a single piece of metal extending inwardly from the side of the door and then turned upwardly often to extend to a point just belowthe upper edge of the door rendering it in such cases difficult to find in the dark and to operate. To overcome this ditficulty I have designed a handle extension member having a ball or head at its upper end to provide a finished appearance and a socket atits lower end adapted to be driven or forced and locked onto the upturned end of the latch handle of a door or the like, and the following is a detailed.description of one means by which this result may be accomplished:

lVith reference to the drawing, 10 designates the blank from which my improved handle extension is formed, the same being cut from sheet stock and subsequently rolled or swaged into hollow or tubular form providing a neck portion 11 which is recessed at 12 at intervals about its periphery adjacent its upper end. At the lower portion ofv this neck portion I have formed an elongated socket portion 18 which is shaped preferably oblong in cross section as shown in Figure 6, to receive theupturned end 14 of the latch handle 15, as shown in Figure 1, the meeting edges 16 of the side walls of this socket being preferably inset slightly as illustrated in Figure 6, so as to bind and grip with a yielding pressure the side face of the handle ont which it is designed to be forced for the purpose of causing it to fit tightly thereon and preventing rattle or looseness when positioned. It is also found of particular advantage to provide'means for locking and securing this extension onto the upturned end of the handle so that it cannot be removed therefrom as in some cases the handle would otherwise be appropriated by an unauthorized person, or it would work loose, fall off and become lost. To obviate this difficulty I have provided an indented or inset spur or finger 17 formed integral with one of the side walls of the socket member, the same being positioned t extend upwardly and inwardly therefrom so as to permit the device to be readily driven onto the latch handle and when soedges of the stock on the side of the socket driven this spur will cut or bite into the Patented May 30, 1922. stock of the handle and so automatically lock the extension member thereto effectively preventing its removal. therefrom. This spur or finger is slightly yieldable and so also serves to bind the socket-onto the latch handle providing additional means for preventing rattling of the parts. In order to provide a practical enlarged head or engaging portion for my improved handle extension member I have formed a ball from sheet stock and I so position this ball onto the handle that the neck portion 11 will set up into the ball against its inner wall for the purpose of supporting the same and preventing the ball from being indented by the blows of a heavy instrument when. being driven or forced onto the upturned end of the latch handle.

m1 have also turned the edges 18 of this ball 19 inwardly into the several recesses 12 formed about the neck of the device whereby the ball is securely retained in position on the neck portion and at the same time by forming the recesses at intervals about the neck instead of providing a perfect circular groove about the same the head is thus pre vented from being rotated on the neck and so effectually prevented from becoming loose thereon and again preventing the rattling of these parts.

My improved handle-extending device is shown as being adapted for use on the up turned end of a latch handle for the purpose of extending the same but it may be used for any purpose for which it is adapted, the same being extremely simple and inexpensive in construction yet practical andeflicient in its operation.

The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve I the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to'which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A handle extension comprising a shank having an engaging portion at its upper end and a socket at its opposite end shaped to receive the end of the handle it is designed to lengthen, and an upwardly and inwardly extending integral spur adapted to yield to permit the positioning of the socket onto the handle but adapted to bite into the stock of the handle to permanently secure the eX- tension member thereto. 7

2. A handle extension comprising a tubular member formed of sheet stock folded to form a neck portion recessed at uneven depths about its periphery, a hollow ball resting against the end of said neck and having its edges shaped to engage said recess, the stock at the lower 'end'of said neck being shaped to form an elongated socket adapted to fit onto the handle it is designed to lengthen and an inturned locking lip formed in the side wall of said socket adapted to automatically lock the device to the handle when positioned thereon.
