Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
CYRUS COBB, OF OHARLESTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COATING CANVAS TO FORM TARPAULINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,764, dated August 12, 1873; application filed May 13, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CYRUS 001313, of Charlestown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Preparation of Burlaps or Canvas for use as Tarpauling; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to the preparation of burlaps or canvas for use as tarpauling and it consists in first wetting or moistening the fabric with saltwater, and in then applying thereto three coats of paint, one after the other, allowing suflicient time for each coat to dry before the application of another.
These three coats are composed of materials respectively mixed and prepared substantially as follows:
The first: One gallon of black paint mixed with linseed-oil until of a consistency sufficient and proper for being ground in a paintmill; one pound of red lead; one pound of litharge; and one pound of beeswax cut into small pieces. These several materials being mixed together are then boiled moderately in a suitable vessel until the wax is thoroughly melted, and the several materials thoroughly incorporated or mixed the one with the others.
The second: One gallon black paint; one pound red lead; and one-half pound litharge. These several materials being mixed together are then boiled moderately for three-quarters of an hour, and when partially cooled, one pint of spirits of turpentine is added.
The third: Ordinary black paint.
The compounds for the first and second coats, before being used, are, respectively, thinned, by adding to each compound three parts of boiled linseed-oil, and one part of Japan drying, by measure, and the first should be warm when applied.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is-- I The preparation of burlaps or canvas, or other suitable fabric, substantially as herein described, for the purpose specified.
