Specification of Letters Patent.
coEro A'rIoN: or VIR- Patented May 30,1922.
Applicationjfiled November 24, 1920. Seria1 1\1'0. 426,1 42.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN F. GRACE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kearney, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Condenser Systems, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part ofthe same.
This invention relates to improvements in condenser systems of that class employing a centrifugal hot-well pump with two stages on the same shaft and the first stage delivering to the intercooler of a two-stage air ejector, so as to operate against a less head than the second stage.
I provide for artificially increasing the head on the first stage of the pump, and
I preferably make this artificial head adjustable to secure the best operation and greatest econom under all conditions.
For a full understanding of the invention, a detailed description of preferred constructions for carrying the same into effect and arranged for cooperation with a surface'condenser, will now be given in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the features forming the invention then specifically pointed out. in the claims.
In the drawings- Figure 1 shows in end elevation a surface condenser and in partial section my improved arrangement of two-stage steam ejector with intermediate jet condenser and adjustable spring operated spray valve for the first stage of the two-stage hotwell pump; and
Figure 2 is a vertical fied construction.
Referring now to the drawings, and especially to Figure 1, the numeral 10 indicates generally a condenser of the surface type, with a first stage steam ejector 12 withdrawing air from the outlet 11 and delivering through nozzle 12 to a jet intercooler or condenser 13, and the second stage steam ejector 14 withdrawing air from the intercooler through pipe 15 and delivering against atmospheric pressure. The first stage of an ordinary two-stage centrifugal pump 16 takes its suction throughpipe 17 section of a modifrom the condenser hot-well 18, and delivdelivered to a the plunger valve 24 in from pipe 19to the intercooler nozzle 25 to which the steam ejector nozzle sion of which is adjustableby nut 2 to s ecure the proper operationcof the pump, the
pressure required to open this valve preferably being the least pressure giving satisfactory operation under all conditions. WVater' of condensation from I the intercooler 13 iswithdrawn by/the second stage of the hot-wellpump through pipe 22 and feed water heater or supply" tank, as. preferred. Vent pipe 23 connects pump casing with the u'pperpart of the hot-well to free the pump of air, as usual.
v Other means may be used for pump to secure efiicient operation. In Fig. 2 I have shown, for. example, a packed pipe 19 opening against atmospheric pressure, and any other suitable form of back pressure valve may be used. In the construction of Fig. 2, the discharge is through 12 discharges.
It will be understood that various changes and modifications in the constructions above described and shown may be made without v suitably ini creaslng the head on the first stage of the departing from the scope of the claims, and
that the invention is not to be' limited to use in connection surface type. While theinventio-n is of essystems such as described, the feature of artificially increasing'the head on one stage pump to equalize the head 1 with condensers of the 85 pecial importance as applied to condenser intercooler, and a two-stage centrifugal liot- I well pump, the first stage of which delivers to the intercooler, of means interposed in the delivery of the first stage of the hot-- well pump for maintaining an increased head thereon to ation of the pump.
2. The combination with a condenser syssecure the efiicient opertem' including multistage steam air ejector devices, an intermediate jet condenser or intercooler, and a two-stage centrifugal hotwell pump, the first stage of which delivers to the intercooler. of adjusta le means interposed in the delivery of the first stage of the hot-well pump for maintaining an adfirst stage of the hot-Well pump delivers to the intercooler, and means for adjusting the pressure on the vvalve to secure the pump head desired. a. a
4'. The combination 'Wl'fll a two-stage pump, one stage of which "delivers against a lower head than the other, of means for increasing the head on the stage delivering against the lower head to secure the proper operation of the pump.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto 20 set my hand.
