Be it known that I, JOHN A. OnsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of :Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machine Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to Vises of the character commonly used in connection with milling machines or other similar apparatus, and particularly to vises of this type which may be operated by air or fluid pres sure.
The objects of the invention are, to provide an improved type of milling machine vise; to provide a milling machine vise which is pneumatically operated; to provide a vise having a movable adjusting screw supporting member and means for actuating the same; and, in general, to provide such an improved structure or apparatus as will be described more fully hereinafter;

Milling machine vises such as are now in common use are usually provided with adjusting screw supports or bearings formed integrally or rigidly with the base. In accordance with my invention, the adjusting screw support is made separate from the base and movable thereon, and suitable means are provided for actuating the support in order to open and close the vise.
As shown in the drawings, a base or body portion. 5 is provided, having any ordii'lary or preferred means for attaching the same to any suitable support, such. as the table of a milling machine or the like. This base is provided at one end with an upwardly extending jaw 6, having a false or work supporting piece 7 secured in position by means of screws 8. The base 5 is provided with a guideway 9, on which a longitudinally movable jaw 10 is supported. This jaw has rectangular guides 11, which fit in grooves 12 in the base 5, and is held against the guideway or bed by means of screws 13, which engage with guide straps 14 which Specification of Letters Patent.

Thej aw or slide 10 has a central threaded hole 17 forthe adjusting screw 18. The rear end of this screw is rotatably secured in a slide 19 and held against longitudinal displacement in any suitable manner, as by means of pins 20, which engage with a circumferential groove 21 in the end of the screw. The screw 18 is also provided with a nut or turning portion 22, which abuts agalnst the face of the slide or screw driving head 19.
The slide 19 is mounted in a guideway 23 in the base 5, and is held by means of guide straps or plates 24 and screws 25 in a manner similar to the movable jaw 10. The slide 19 has a socket 26, which is preferably formed by inserting a hardened semi.-circular bearing 27, which. hearing is held by screws 28. This socket serves for engagement with the end of a link 28, which, with the link 29, forms atoggle for actuating the slide. These two links are pivoted to gether by means of a pin 30,'which is preferably held in one member by having a driving fit, while turning freely in the other member.
The slide 19 is provided with a pin 31, which engages with a hole in the link 28, the hole being slightly larger than the pin, so that the thrust will come against the socket bearing. Another pin 31 issecured in the base 5 and serves as a bearing for the rear end of the toggle 29. The toggle is actuated by a cross-head. or slide 32, which has a curved shoulder 33 adapted to push against the inner ends of: the toggle links during the pressure stroke. This block or slide is also provided with a pin 34, which engages with the opposite sides of the inner ends of the links for drawing the ends forwardly during the return or opening stroke.
The slide 32 may be actuated in any suitable manner, as by means of a piston rod 35. which is secured thereto, and is also secured to a piston 36 in the cylinder 37, this cylinder being provided with any ordinary or preferred forms of intakes and outlets and means for controlling the air or fluid thereto (not shown).
When the piston 36 moves forwardly from the position shown in Fig 1, the pin 34 in the slide 32 will pull the inner ends of the toggle links forward and thereby cause the pin 31 to move to the left, and will draw the slide 19 to the left, causing the jaws to be opened. When the work piece has been inserted between the jaws, air is admitted to the cylinder 37, causing the piston to move baclnvardly and the shoulder on the slide or cross-head 32 will press against the adjacent ends of the toggle links, and will straighten out the toggle, thereby forcing the slide or screw driving head 19 to the right, causing the aws to tighten on the work piece. It will, of course, be ap parent that the screw 18 may be turned to adjust the jaws for different sized work pieces, so that it considerable pressure is desired, the toggle links should be approximately in alignment in order to exert the greatest clamping force when the jaw 10 reaches the end of its movement.
While the present illustration shows a practical and preferred embodiment of this invention, it will be apparent that the pneumatic cylinder may be arranged. in different positions and other operative connections made for actuating the toggle and the device may be made in different sizes in order to provide for different kinds of work, and the shape and details of construction may be varied without departing from the scope of this invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a vise, the combination of a support having a fixed jaw extending upwardly therefrom, a slideway in said support, a slidablc jaw mounted .in. said, slideway, a. slide mounted on said support, a screw rotatably secured to said slide and engaging with a threaded hole in said slidahlc aw, a toggle connected with said slide for actuating the same, and means for actuating the toggle.
2. The combination with a base having a fixed jaw at one end, of a slidable jaw, a slidable screw support, an adjusting screw rotatably mounted in said support and engaging with athreaded hole in the slidable jaw, a pin in said base at the rear ot the slid-able screw support, toggle arms connecting aid pin and said screw support, a cross head mounted in said base and engaging with said toggle arms. and a fluid pressure device for moving said cross-head.
3. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a support. a slide inov ably mounted on said support, power actuated means for moving said slide, a slidable clamping jaw mounted on said support, an adju table connection between said slide and said jaw, and a fixed. jaw cooperating with said slidable aw.

In a machine vise, the combination of a support having a fixed jaw thereon, a slide movably mounted on said support, a jaw movahlv mounted on said support and coacting with the first named jaw and an adjusting screw coacting with the slide and the slidable jaw for adjusting the distance between them.
