UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE OBED LOOK, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHEELS FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,652, dated August 12, 1873; application filed August 12, 1872.
To (112 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OBED Loox, of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improved Metallic Wagon- Hub, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to an adjustable metallic hub and box; and consists in casting the hub with a circular opening through the center with eccentric recesses to same on the opposite ends around the opening, and in casting a re-enforce on the box eccentric to it 5 also in an adjustable eccentric thimble for same, the combination being secured by a nut on the box; the object being to replace a worn or defective axle-box by a perfect one without disturbing the spokes or injuring other parts of the wheel.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a cross-section through the hub at a a. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig.3 is a cross-section of box, showing the construction of re-enforce.
A is the axle-box; B B, the hub; 0, the nut; D, the re-enforce; D, the thimble; 1, tie for forming the side of mortise for spokes; B, the tie-web connecting the nut at base of mortise. To the box A I cast the re-enforce D, eccentric to the centerof box. The re-enforce or thimble D is cast separate from box, and is also eccentric to it. The hub B B I cast entire, the mortises being the same as in general use, the web B and ties 1 uniting them together. Through the center of the hub an opening is formed for the box, its inner diameter being somewhat larger than the box A to allow for the centering of same. The ends of the hub are recessed around the opening to the shape of re-enforce D and thimble D, and
in like manner are eccentric to the center of the box. On the outer end of the box I cut the thread 2 and fit the nut c, by which the parts are held together.
In setting the box to the hub the re-enforce D fits into the recess of hub B. The thimble D is then fitted to its place, and then the nut c is turned up against the thimble D with sufficient force to bring the parts to their proper position. The wheel is then revolved on the axle to test whether it is true or not. If it is not true it is turned a little on the box to change its position, or the thimble D is turned till all the parts are true. The nut O is then turned up, securing the parts firmly together, a sufficient length being allowed on the thimble D to prevent the nut c from bearing on the face of hub.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the recessed hub B, the axle-box A having're-eniorce D cast on it, the adjustable thimble D, the center of the circumference of the re-enforce and the thimble being eccentric to that of the box A, all substantially as set forth.
2. The combination and arrangement of the recessed open hub 13, the box A having reenforce D, the adjustable thimble D, and the securing-nut 0, all substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification before two subscribing witnesses.
