INFANTS MERRY-GO-ROUND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1922.
Application filed February 10, 1920. Serial No. 357,498.
llo all 'Hi/1,0m- 'it may concern Bc it known that HARRY A. Funnnincits, a citizen of the United States of Americz, resii'liing at Port Angeles, in the county of (llallam and State `of VVAshington, has invented new and, useful Improvements in Infants Merry-Go-Rounds, of which the :following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a merry-go-round or perambulator for intants to be used both as a means of entertainment or amusement and also as a means of exercise and of teaching the child to walk, under conditions not requiring the close attention of a nurse or attendant, and to this end the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a side view of the apparatus.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view of the car.
The device consists essentially of an anchoring standard or pedestal 10 adapted by reason of its weight and stability to be positioned wherever may be most convenient on a suitable fiat surface such as a Hoor to determine the center of an area to be traversed or an orbit to be described by a car or chair 11 adapted for the reception of the infant and connected with said standard by a radius frame' 1Q. In the construction shown the standard is composed of a base 213 of metal or otherwise heavily weighted with a sufficiently broad bottom to afford the necessary stability, from the upper end of which extends a spindle la upon which is rcvolublymounted an eye 15 at the inner cnd of the radius frame l2, a movable cap nut '1,6 being employed to prevent accidental disengagement of the eye from the spindle, and any suitable forni of anti-friction bear# ing being employed to facilitate the movef ment of the frame around the pedestal. The base may be provided with a suitable grip or handle 17 to facilitate the transportation of the same from place to place as may be required.
Also as shown the radius frame may consist of the outwardly divergent bars 18 suitably braced as shown at 19 and attached at their outer extremites to a band 2O forming the upper marginal element of a basket 21 forming a member of the car and having enclosed therein a suitable seat or support 22 for accommodating the infant in a sitting or half-standing position. The car is prei erably provided with one or more supporting wheels or disks 23 to sustain the weight of the occupant while permitting the feet to touch the floor so that the proper movemen in walking may be acquired without the disadvantages during the early stages of instruction in this connection of imposing the entire or any considerable portion of the entire weight of the infant upon its feet.
Obviously the car is adapted in accord ance with the movements of the occupant to describe an orbital path in either direction around the standard or pedestal as a center and by reason of the limitation of the orbit to a prescribed area the attention ordinarily required in connection with the use of perainbulators which are free to move in any direction, is avoided.
lhat is claimed is:
An infants perambulator consisting of an anchoring standard formed with a weighted base adapted by reason of its weight to maintain itself in position whereever placed on a fiat surface, the said standard being provided with a hand grip to permit its removal and being also provided with an lip-standing spindle on its top, a radius frame formed at one end with an eye engaging said spindle and adapted for turning movement thereon, a cap nut threadingly engaged with the spindle to prevent movenient of the radius rod upwardly in a ver# tical plane, the top of the standard preventing such movement of the frame down wardly, and a Wheel supported car connected at the outer end of the radius frame.
In testimony whereof he atlixes his signature.
HARRY A. FREDERICKS.
