ELEvAroR nEvioE: 1
Application filed. Ju1y28,
To all whom it may concern .-Be it known that I, MARTIN MIo'KnLsoN,
a citizen of. the'United States, residing at Muskegon Heights, inthe county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented .elevator lift or hoist mechanism including means for hoisting and lowering purposes; the said means beingv in the nature of a screw drive so that the position of the car is continuously .variedas long as the drive mechanism is inoperationn.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention may be said to reside generally in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully pointed out, reference being had to the accompanying drawin ,wherein- I igure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the application of the invention.
Figure 2 is a horizontal cross section dis closing the manner in which the car is mounted in the elevator shaftor frame, and
Figure 3 is an enlarged detailed view, in section, of the track. Y
In the drawings, lindicates an elevator shaft or the frame within which the elevator car is mounted for movement and this frame is provided on one side with a door-way 2. When installed in a building, this shaft would, of course, extend from the basement to the roof thereof usually and a door way would be provided for each floor so that access to the lift or elevator could be had on any. floor of the building. Ihe frame is provided on two sides with a guide way 3, preferably of a channeled construction, for engagement with guides -arranged in suitable numbers and at appropriate places on the elevator car 5. The car 5 may be of any suitable construction and is provided with a door way 6 to register with the door ways 2 of the frame as the car moves verticallywithin the shaft. At its top and bottom, the car is provided with an opening 7 forming the outletof a well 8 running Specification of Letters Patentjg'f M 1920, SeriaI No. 39 95131 longitudinally of the elevator car and *partitionedioft' from the remainder of the car,'as'
illustrated. This well provides for the pas-- sage, through the center of the car, of a supporting column: or drive'shaft '9 upon which the car is mounted {for movement."- 7 Thiscolumn 931s provided with re'ducedends 10 providedeach with enlarged heads 11" or brackets 13 located: at the top and'bot which fiti'nto'the sockets l2i'of'the bearings tom of. the elevator. shaft'as shown in Figure 1. Suitable: friction bearings 14 are "provided vineach socket, beneath each head 12 to enable-the column to'be readilyrotat'edabout its axis for'raisingor lowering the car;
Rigid with the lower'end' lO of the column, 1
is .a large gear 15 and nieshin'g with this gear is aipinlon 'orworm-'16 ofa'motor drive 17.. "It is intended that the motor drive" be controlled-from the elevator car i and.accordinglywany suitable'jcontrolling mechanism may be located in the car and electrically connected 'tothe drive for regulating the movement of the car. 'It is obvious that when the motor is started, the
worm 16 throughits engagement with the gear 15 will cause the latter toturn and revolve the. column 9 on the bearings 14. To enable the revolving column 9 to impart movement to the car 3, the former is provided with an outstanding continuous rib or flange l8 threaded in a spiral curve from ,onefend of the column to the other as shown in the drawings. This flange carries a rim or ridge 19 spaced outwardly from the body of'the column and providinga.
spiral track which changes its position after the manner of the threads ofv a screw during the rotation of the column. Designed for engagement with the spiral track are a pair of track wheels 20. These wheels revolve i I on axles 21 carried by brackets 22, preferably affixed to opposite side walls of the well 8 and adjacent the bottom of the car, being relatively offset to engage the'track at disaligned points for keeping the car: in a vertical position; These wheels or track rollers 20 are supported, it isto be noted,
outwardly from the sides of the well and are flanged to keep the car from coming in" contact with the revolving track;
When the device'is setup, the car;3 is mounted upon the rotatablecolumn 9 so as to be slidable within the elevator frame or shaft 1, the guide 3 of the car sliding within the guide ways 4 and steadying' the movement of the car as it moves up and. down,
along the column 9. When it is desired to raise or lower the car, the operator starts the motor 17 for rotating the gear, l5'and,
the column 9. As the spiral track 18 revolves with the, column after the manner of a screwthread, it exerts a lifting force against the rollers 20 which causes the car to move upwardly along the column at a rate of speed proportionateto the revolutions of the supportingmember 9; In lower ing the car, the screw column is reversed and the weight of the car enables it-to drop easily as the track recedes. A push button 28, or other suitable signalling means may be located on each floor oi? the building in which the elevator is; installed and is electrically connected tothe motor 1.7,
From; theforegoing, it may be seen that the; invention contemplates the provision of a novel form ofelevator. lift or hoist wherein the car is-lifted by the screw. action of a rotating, supporting column which passes through a well-or partitioned port-ionof-the car and which is mounted to turn easily, upon suitablebearings, under the control of the operator. Itis of course to be understood that minor changes in the character of invention and the details. of: construction, etc, maybe'resortfed toas long asthey a car having a suitable bottom, said car provided with a vertically extending well passing'through the sameand' enclosing said column, a spiral on the screwcolumn having an upstanding rim; brackets secured to the said car bottom, a grooved roller carried by the said brackets and arranged to rideon said upstanding rim, and .a guide car rled by the sald car for engagement with said guide rails, all as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony'whereofl aflii; my signature in presence of two witnesses.
