g and State of Be it known that I, WARREN G. LEINBACH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of VVilkinsbur r, in the county of Allegheny fiennsylvanimhave invented a new and useful Improvement in Pickling Machines, of which'the following is a specification.
The invention relates to that. type of p1ckling machines which include a plurality of vats and mechanism for reciprocating the articles being treated in the vats, and forplacing the articles in and from the vats.
The object of the invention is to provlde a pickling machine of the general character removing them explained which will be simple in construction, effective-in operation and economical to manufacture. invention 1s to provide a pickling machine in which thereciprocation of the articles.

In pickling machines of the character contemplated herein, three pickling vats '1,
are usually arranged at quarter points arounda verticallymovable ram 2. Two of such vats are indicated in Fig. 1,,u1e position of the third usually being immediately back of-the ram. The fourth quarter point is usually used for a loading and unloading station. In the practice of the invention, the ram I 2 is preferably formed of an H-section, the
lower end of which extends into a well 8 below the floor level 5. At the upper end of the ram there are a plurality of laterally extending arms 6, fromthe outer ends of which cages 7 are suspended by means of rods or cables 8. The arms 6, of which there are preferably four in number, form a spider having a central hubv 9 rotatably mounted on a cap 10 secured to the top of:

By operating the motor 2%, the sprocket wheels 28 may be rotated to either elevate or lower ran'i2. The free end of chains 29 may pass around rollers 31, arranged in well 3, as seen in Fig. 1.
To hold the ram in its vertical position, suitable guides are provided. To avoid friction, such guides may take the form of a pair of oppositely disposed rollers 32 mounted on the top of frame li, a roller 33 mounted on rotary shaft 27, and a roller 34: ar ranged in the upper end of well 3 in a position substantially opposite to the roller 33.
In the operation of the pickling machine, assuming that the cages have been filled with material to be treated and that the apparatus is in the position indicated in Fig. 1, motor 18 may be operated to cause the ram 2 to reciprocate. The driving connections from the motor include pinions 19 and 20, crank shaft 21, pitman 22, pivoted arm 12, links 15, collar 16 and brackets 17. At the end of a pickling operation, the motor 18 may be stopped and motor 2% operated to elevate the ram 2 to such position that the lower edges of the cages are above the upper edges of the vats. The driving connections for this purpose includepinions 25 and 26, rotary shaft 27, sprocket wheels 28, chains 29 and a base 30 upon which the ram rests. When the ram has been elevated to the proper position, the cages may be engaged by hand and pulled so as to cause the spider to rotate upon the upper end of ram 2. he rain may then be lowered by using motor 24 as a brake, after which motor 18 may be again started in operation to re ciprocate the ram.
According to the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principle and operation of my invention, together with the construction which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof. However, I desire to have it understood that, within the scope of the appended claims, the invention may be practiced by other forms of construction than that specifically shown and described.
I claim:
1. In a pickling machine, the combination with a plurality of vats, of a vertically movable ram provided with lateral arms having cages suspended therefrom, a pivoted arm engaging to said ram,- a motor, and connections between said motor and arm for oscillating the arm to reciprocate the ram.
21h a pickling machine, the combination with a plurality of vats, of a vertically movable ram provided with lateral arms having cages suspended therefrom, a frame, a horizontally disposed arm pivoted to the frame, alink pivoted to said arm and provided with an abutment engaging said ram, a motor, and connections between said motor and arm for oscillating the arm to reciprocate the ram.
3. In a pickling machine, the combination with a plurality of vats, of a vertically movable ram provided with lateral arms having cages suspended therefrom and provided further with a laterally extending bracket, a frame, a horizontally disposed arm pivoted at one end of said frame, a link pivotally connected to the other end of said arm and provided with an abutment adapted to engage said bracket, a motor, and connections between said motor and arm for oscillating the arm to reciprocate the ram.
4. In a pickling machine, a combination with a plurality of vats, of a vertically movable ram provided with lateral arms having cages suspended therefrom and further provided with a pair of laterally extending brackets, a frame, a horizontally disposed arm pivoted at one end of the frame, a pair of links pivoted to the other end of said arm and provided with a collar surrounding said ram and engaging said brackets thereon, a
motor, and connections between said motor and arm for oscillating the arm to reciprocate the ram.
5. In a pickling machine, the combination with a plurality of vats, of a vertically movable ram provided with lateral arms having cages suspended therefrom, a frame, a horizontally disposed arm pivoted to the frame, connections between said arm and ram, a motor, a rotary crank shaft driven by said motor, and a pitman between said shaft andarm for oscillating the arm to reciprocate the ram.
6. In a pickling machine, the combination with a plurality of vats, of a vertically movable ram provided with lateral arms having cages suspended therefrom, a pivoted arm connected to said ram, a motor, connections between said motor and arm for oscillating the arm to reciprocate the ram, and independent means for moving the ram upwardly to remove the cages from the vats.
7. In a pickling machine, the combination with a plurality of vats, of a vertically movable ram provided with lateral arms having cages suspended therefrom, a pivoted arm connected to said ram, a motor, connections between said motor and arm for oscillating the arm to reciprocate the ram, a second motor, and connections between the second motor and ram for moving the latter upwardly to remove the cages from the vats.
8. In a pickling machine, the combination with a plurality of vats, of a vertically movable ram provided with lateral arms having cages suspended therefrom, means for reciprocating said ram to cause the cages to move upwardly and downwardly in the vats, a motor, a rotary shaft driven by said motor and provided with a pair of sprocket wheels arranged one at each side of said ram, chains engaged by said sprockets and connected at their ends to said ram whereby the ram may be moved upwardly to remove the.

9. In a pickling machine, the combination with a plurality of vats, of a vertically movable ram provided atits upper end with lateral arms having cages suspended therefrom vand further provided intermediate of its ends with a pair of oppositely disposed lateral brackets, a frame surrounding said ram and provided with guide rollers for maintaining the ram in vertical position, a horizontally disposed arm pivoted at one end to said frame, a pair of links pivotally connected to the other end of said arm, a collar attached to the outer ends of said links and adapted to bear upon said brackets, a motor, a crank shaft driven by said motor, a pitman connecting said crank shaft with said arm for oscillating the arm to reciprocate the ram, a second motor, a rotary shaft driven by said second motor and provided with a pair of sprocket wheels arran ed one at each side of said ram, and apair of chains engaged one by each of said sprocket wheels and attached at their ends to said ram whereby the ram may be moved upwardly to remove thecages from the vats.
10. In a pickling machine, the combination with a plurality of vats, of a vertidownwardly in arms havingcages suspended therefrom, an
electric motor and driving connections therefrom to said ram for reciprocating the ram v to cause the cages to move upwardly and moton, a pair of flexible members arranged one at each slde of sa1d ram and having the r lower ends connected to the ram, and
connections between said second motor and the upper ends of said flexible members whereby said ram may be raised and lowered by the operation of the motor.
11. In a pickling machine a combination with a plurality of vats, of a vertically movableram provided with lateral arms having cages suspended therefrom, means for reciprocating said ram to cause the cages to move upwardly and 1 downwardly in the vats, a motor, a pair of flexible members arranged one at'each side ofsaid ram and having their lower ends connected to the lower portion of the ram, and connections between the upper ends of said flexible members and said motor whereby the operation of the motor is effective to move the ram to remove the cages from the vats.
