TATES UNITE PATENT QFFIGE.
CHARLES H. HALL, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY, AND ROBERT KNOTT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN GLOVEFFASTENINGS- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,555, dated August 5, 1873; application filed March 15, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES H. HALL, of Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, and ROBERT KNoTT, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Glove-Fastening, of which the following is a specification Our invention consists of a little bar with a series of notches in each edge and wide portions between the notches, hinged to a clip fastened to the glove at one side of the slit for the wrist, and a notched hook on a clip fastened to the glove at the other side, so arranged that it can engage the bar behind any one of the enlargements to fasten the glove tight or loose, as may be desired.
The clips by which the bar and the hook are fastened to the glove consist of thin plates of silver, gold, or any ductile metal, with spurs formed on them to fasten them to the glove by punching them out of the metal in the ordinary way of making such fastenings but we take care to have the point of junction of the spurs with the plates considerably inside the edges, so that any little tear or break of the skin of the glove cannot, by forcing the spurs through it, show as it will when the spurs join the plates at the edge, as they commonly do.
The plates and bar may be cut and otherwise shaped in any approved ornamental design.
Figure l is a plan view of our improved fastening applied to a glove. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the hook and the clip by which it is fastened to the glove, and an endwise view of the plate and spurs by which the clip is fastened to the glove. Fig. 3 is a section of Fig. l on the line 00 w.
A represents the notched bar, and B the hook by which it is engaged to fasten the glove. This bar is hinged to a clip, 0, of soft metal, of any desired form, fastened to the part D of the glove by spurs E and an inside fastening-plate, F. It has a series of notches, a, in the edges for forming enlargements b between them, by which it can be engaged by the hook B in a clip, H, fastened to the part I of the glove in the same manner that clip 0 is. This hook is notched at J, so that the narrow part of the bar will drop in saidnotch to fasten the bar by the enlargements being engaged by the hooks.
This bar may be ornamented in any Way, say, by little studs 6 and a tassel, and polished bright, so as to be desirable for its ornarnental qualities as well as its utility.
It will be seen that the spurs E join the plates out of which they are punched so far from the margin that any tear of the skin at the holes through which they pass will be covered by the plates so as not to be seen.
By the use of these spurs E and fasteningplates F these fastenings may be applied to the gloves by the dealer when he sells them, so that the purchaser may select to suit.
Wearers may also purchase and apply them at will, and they may be taken 05 from a wornout pair of gloves and put on another several times before the spurs will break.
The advantage ofa glove-fasteningby which the glove can be fastened more or less tightly will be appreciated at once, as also the facility with which a fastening of this kind can be fastened and unfastened.
Instead of fastening the clip to the glove by the spurs and the plate F, we may employ a stud-back such as is sometimes used to fasten buttons.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A glove-fastening, comprising the notched bar A hinged to a clip, O,fastened to the part D of the glove, and the notched hook B in a clip, H, fastened to the part I of the glove, all combined and arranged substantially as specified.
