To all fw kom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED R. ANDEnsEN, a lcitizen of the United States, residing at Rock Springs, in the county of Sweetwater and State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antiskidding Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. p .v
This invention relates to certain improvements in anti-skidding devices and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with wheels of motor driven vehicles and it'V is an object of the invention to provide" a novel and improved device of this character which, when applied, will operate effectively to prevent skidding and also slippage. I
'Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character hav-v ing novel'and improved means whereb the same may be quickly applied and easi y removed and also e ectively maintained in applied position.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved anti-skidding device whereby cer,- tain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel 'features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I4 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to thel accompanying drawings, wherein:

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, C denote side chains and each of said chains has securedto an end thereof a substantiallyU-shaped member M, one side arm l of which is hingedly mounted, as at 2, so that the same may be readily swung into or out of operative position. 3 denotes a pulley mounted upon the shaft 4, said shaft having its extremities mounted inthe free end portions of the side arms/1 and la of the member M, the hinge connection 2 of the arm l permitting said arm to be .ad-

This member is threaded through a sleeve 6 and in applying the complete device tothe tire of the wheel, said cable is passed around the pulley 3 and extended through a second sleeve 7, said sleeve 7 being connected to the sleeve 6. Threaded through a wallfof each of the sleeves 6 and 7 is a set o-r binding screw 8 which is adapted to have clamp- .ing action upon the portions of the cable A extending therethrough vwhereby the side chain C is effectively maintained in applied position, the use of the sleeves 6 and 7 and the associated binding screws 8 affording a double securing means to assure the proper maintenance of theside chain C in applied position. ff
Connecting the side chains at predetermined spaced points therealong are the tread units B.' Each of the units B embodies a plate P of a length and of such curvature to straddle the tread portion of the tire T. Extending longitudinally of the plate- P at vits ltransverse center is an outstanding rib or flange 9 and extending transverselyacross the plate at substantiallyv its l vlongitudinal center is asecond rib'oriiange 10. The ribs or flanges 9l and l() operate effectively to prevent skiddin or slippage. The opposite end portions o each of the plates P is provided with an extension 11 returned upwardly to provide the barrels 12.
By having a pair of members D and E associated with each end portion of a plate P, it is assured that the plate P will not effect a rim cut and which is further prevented in view of the fact thatt'he plate P is only of a length to straddle the tread portion of the plate P.
The members D and E also serve effectively to maintain the plates P firmly in working position and at all times preventing said plates from turning over and thereby being liable to cut the tire.
The construction of the plates P is also such to preventthe same becoming clogged with mud, snow, ice and the like so that said plates are at all times in condition to effect the best gripping action on the roadway..
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that an anti-skidding device constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated` and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason .l do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except -as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
A device of the class .described comprising a pair of side members, tread units interposed between and connected with said side members, a flexible member secured t0 an extremity of each of said side members, a substantially U-shaped member carried by the opposite end portion of said side member, one of the side arms of said last named member having swinging movement, a shaft supported by the outer extremities of the side arms of the last named member, a pulley mounted upon said shaft between the, arms, the flexible member at the opposite extremity of said side member being disposed around the pulley, spring hooks carried by the side arms of the last nalncd member and cngageable with the extremities of the shaft to hold the shaft and pulley in applied position, and means connecting the portion of the flexible member in advance of the pulley and the portion of the flexible member outwardly of the pulley.
