TRACTOR WHEEL. 7 APPLICATION FILED JUNE 4,192!- Patented May9, 1922.
INVENTUR W35 Aria? STATES P i i' rein.
PATET TRACTOR WHEEL.
Specification of Lettersfatent.
Patented May 9, 1922.
Application filed June 4, 1921. Serial No. 475,117.
To all whom it may com-cam Be it known that I, lt' niniaar Gnrrrrrrr TRETHEWEY, of Cuckfield, in the county of Sussex, England, a subject of the King 'of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tractor Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wheels particularly adapted for farm tractors and the like, and my object is to devise a wheel which will be light, strong and easily built, is of such construction that it will not fill up with mud, which will possess excellent ground gripping qualities, which may be used on hard surfaced roads without detriment thereto, and which will not unduly chip up the surface of the soil when used on a tractor engaged in plowing.
I attain my object by means of the constructions hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. l is a side elevation of a wheel constructed in accordance with my invention; and
2 a cross section on theline (Ir-"2) in Fi 1.
in the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
1 is a disk, preferably annular, which is adapted to be secured to a wheel hub of any suitable construction, bolt holes as shown being provided for this purpose.
upported by this disk is a narrow rim band 2. Preferably the connection is by means of an annular flange 3 integral with the rim band, to which flange the disk 1 is welded, bolted, riveted or otherwise suitably secured. Spaced from the rim band 2 is a second rim band 4L. This rim band also preferably has an inwardly extending annular flange 5 formed integral therewith. The rim band f is supported from the disk 1 by means of brackets 6. In their preferred form each bracket is formed from a metal plate bent and cut to form a flat bracket base 7 riveted, ably secured to the disk 1, arms 8 and lugs 10 at the ends of the arms, these lugs being welded, riveted, bolted or otherwise suitably secured to the flange 5 of the rim band 4.
It will be noted that to secure effective bracing against a rotary displacement of the second rim band relative to the first that which bolted, welded or otherwise suitthe arms 8 of the brackets flare or spread from the disk 1 to the rim flange so as to more effectively resist the strains tending to twist the second rim as aforesaid. The arms 8 are also inclined diagonally from the diskjof the rim at to more effectively resist radially directed strains on said rim.
Secured to the two rim bands are roadgripping members 1e, preferably formed of angle bar material. These members are welded, bolted, riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the rim bands. It will also be noted that the upwardly extending leg of each angle bar member, instead of lying in a plane substantially normal to the outer surface of the rims, is inclined to such plane, so
that it will lift out of the soil when the wheel is rotating in av suitable direction. with as little disturbance as possible to the soil, thereby avoiding the chipping of the surface of the soil which would interfere with the proper lying of the furrows turned by plows drawn by the tractor.
It is desirable to make provision whereby the tractor wheels may run on hard surfaced roads without injury to the same. I therefore prefer to form on or secure to the rim band 2 an outwardly extending annular flange 11 with which is integrally connected a narrow rim 12 overlying the outwardly extending legs of the angle bar road gripping members. A narrow continuous tread is thus provided which will prevent the road gripping members sinking too deeply into a hard-surface road, while they will scarcely interfere with the proper sinking of the road gripping members into soft soil.
Preferably each road griping member is provided with an integral lug 13 bolted or riveted to the flange 11 as shown.
From the above description it will be seen that I have devised a wheel which will satisfactorily attain the objects of my invention as set out in the preamble to this specification.
W hat I claim as: my invention is 1. A tractor wheel comprising a disk adapted to be secured to a hub; a narrow rim band carried by said disk; brackets secured to said disk; a second rim band spaced from the first and secured to and supported by the brackets; and transverse ground gripping members secured to said rims.
2. A tractor wheel constructed as set forth in claim 1 in which the ground gripping members are formed of angle bars, one leg gral With said flange concentric With said rim band, and With lugs on the ground gripping members secured to said flange.
5. A tractor Wheel constructed as set forth in claim 1 in Which each bracket is formed of a plate bent and cut to form a flat bracket base secured to the disk, a laterally extending arm and a lug at the end of the arm and in Which the second rim band is formed with an inwardly directed annular flange to which said lugs are connected.
Signed at Toronto this 21st day of 1921.
