(GRANTED UNDER THE PROVISIONS F THE ACT 0F MARCH 3, 1921, 41 STAT. L., 1313.)
To all @ahum t may concern:
Be it known that LADOLF DowALD, manufacturer, a citizen of Germany, residing at and whose post-office address is Bremen, Schleifmhle 72,v Germany, have invented Certain new and useful Improvements in Rollers for Sliding Doors and the like, (for which I have filed applications in Germany July 18, 1918, and'patented July 20,l 1920, No. 323,334, and in Germany Mar. 6, 1919, patented July 20, 1920, No. 323,335g) and f YI do hereby declare' the `following to be a full, clear, and exact description'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
rihis invention relates to devices for facilitating the shifting of sliding doors and the like, in which a ball-shaped or wheel-shaped roller, on which the doorslides, revolves in a ball bearing. y
An object of the invention is to simplify and cheapen the manufacture roller, and to improve their ,construction so as to lessen oroverconie the troubles dueto jamming, and thus to decrease the likelihood of violence'being used in opening orclosing the sliding door.
This object is accomplished .by attaching the fastening iron, by which the complete roller is fixed to the door, a block into which a round hole, for thereception of thevballshaped or wheel-shaped roller and its bearing balls, is made to a certain depth, so as to leave an unperforated back, the hole being closed after the insertion of the roller andf its bearing balls, and a slot being made in the block into which the bar lits along which the door slides. The block may be cast in one piece with the fastening iron, or formed with it in a rolling process, or it :may be welded or fixed thereto in any other adequate manner. The new device is suitable for doors which are suspended from above by the sliding rollers, and also for doors that rest upon roller arranged at the bottom.
The arangement and design of the parts of the new roller make it easy and cheap to manufacture, because it is only necessary to make a simple cylindrical hole in the solid block, which latter may be an` integral part of the fastening iron. No special bearing rings or bushes are required for the weight of this kind ofv will be jammed fast, so that in any case slid` ing friction, instead of rolling friction, will take place, and the door will be diiiicult to move. With the new arrangement, a type of ball-bearing for the travelling roller or ball results in which the carrying balls, i. e.
the balls forming the bearing, take both the verticalv and the horizontal bearing pressures and transfer them tothe walls of the device without the travellingball or roller coming into contact with the said wall. The whole horizontal pressure on the bearing is transferred in a direction vertical to the surfaces over which the balls roll. Y
VSeveral ways of carryingv out the inventions are shown in the drawing in which,
Fig. 1 is 'a vertical section througha roller taken at right anglesl to the face of the door, Fig. 2 is a vertical section through Fig. 1 taken parallel to the face of the door, and
Fig. 3 is ahorizontal section.
Fig. Llillustrates a modification in which a travelling roller is used instead of a ball.
Figs. 5 to-8 represent various --forms of travelling-rollers. v
Fig. 9 illustrates a design which provides for the removal of the roller casing or block from the fastening iron.
Similar parts have like signs of reference in all of the figures.
In the drawing a denotes the track or track bar which has an L-s'haped section in the illustrated designs, but which may be made in any desired shape. In Figs. 1 to 3,
In the known formsv of rollers which have y Y angle, a flat bar, or otherwise, according to tened to the door o. f
the manner in which the rollerjis'to bel fas-4 wall ofthe casing, that results yfrom the drillingof the hole muis providedwith aA slot lg through which the track bar a is inserted soasto allow theball b torolluponV it.
To assemble the parts of the roller the casing y, .which has been` fashioned from'. the
solid block, is laid with the outer surface of its back wall it downwards and then the ring'of balls d is placed on the inner surface of the said wall.v 1
' iinally the'sec'on'd ring of carrying-balls c is inserted. The frontopening of the casing is then closed by a plate iwhich, as is indicated by broken vlines in Fig. 2 .and inthe i horizontal sectional representation oi'lFig. 3, V'may take' the form of va wedge-shaped slide with ybevelled edges fitting into bevelled grooves that is heldin place by' screws in the holes z'. l
After the hanging or Vbearing iron e, to which the block f is attached, has been fixed to the top or bottom of the door as thecase may bethe roller is lifted onto the track bar e and by means of a stop p, which is fixed byscrews, itY is'prevented 'romvbeing Vshifted 'ofi' the bar by lifting.
An'fadvantage gained by employing the rollers shownv in Figs. :4 to 8, `instead ofthe ball b represented in F ig..1, is that the upper edge of the track bar a is nothollowed out Vas in Fig. l, but maybe made flat (Figs. 5
and 8) orarched- (Figs. 4 and 7 or roofcumula'ton ofwat'er on. the track of the roller, vwhich would occur if the door were exposedto lthe weather, isprevented.
done after-the drilling operation.
`the top than at the bottom-,so that the thicker-wall is thatwhich bears the load.l
The milling oi the slot 'g is preferably y-In the modification showny in Fig. 9 the block f is detachable' from thehanging or arrangement the Vwhole roller comprising the travelling roller or ball with its bearing balls Y AV cylindrical hole m is drilled to 'a vcertain. depth in the block f so that -a back wall 7c (Figs. l, 2 and 3) remains. The bottom'A may veasily be removed from the door for repairs whenever'any trouble due to Vbreakage of balls or other mishaps arises. This i's of special importance in cases of heavy,
large doors or gates. Y
In this Fig. a again represents the track .bar and Z) the travelling roller which is m of the block f is Vclosed by theplatek. Then the travelling ballor vroller b, andl The'exterior of the block f may be of any Vdesired shape such r.as circular', square, oval, etc. It may also be fixed in the fastening and |a lateral slot, a rearV wall at one end of f said block and integraltherewith, and a lid for covering the other or open end of said block.
2.V In a'roll'er device for a slidingdoor, or the like, a housing for the roller bearing consisting-of a single'block comprising a chamber for containing the rollers and a lid con-Y stituting the end wall for said chamber, the other walls of the chamber being integral with said block. 1 Y
3. In a roller device for a sliding door, or
the like, comprising a track, ahousingwfor thefroller bearingcomprising a singleblock, a cylindrical chamber within the block, said chamber opening at ,one end of the Vblock for. ..admitt ing the bearing rollers,a lid for` closing the open end of saidchamber, andv a lateral slot in the wall of said chamber for admitting'the track into contact with said rollers.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature,
inf presence of two witnesses.
