Be it known that LADOLF DowALD, manufacturer, a citizen of Germany, residing at and whose post-office address is Bremen, Schleifmhle 72,v Germany, have invented Certain new and useful Improvements in Rollers for Sliding Doors and the like, (for which I have filed applications in Germany July 18, 1918, and'patented July 20,l 1920, No. 323,334, and in Germany Mar. 6, 1919, patented July 20, 1920, No. 323,335g) and f YI do hereby declare' the `following to be a full, clear, and exact description'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
rihis invention relates to devices for facilitating the shifting of sliding doors and the like, in which a ball-shaped or wheel-shaped roller, on which the doorslides, revolves in a ball bearing. y
An object of the invention is to simplify and cheapen the manufacture roller, and to improve their ,construction so as to lessen oroverconie the troubles dueto jamming,and thus to decrease the likelihood of violence'being used in opening orclosing the sliding door.
This object is accomplished .by attaching the fastening iron, by which the complete roller is fixed to the door, a block into which a round hole, for thereception of thevballshaped or wheel-shaped roller and its bearing balls, is made to a certain depth, so as to leave an unperforated back, the hole being closed after the insertion of the roller andf its bearing balls, and a slot being made in the block into which the bar lits along which the door slides. The block may be cast in one piece with the fastening iron, or formed with it in a rolling process, or it :may be welded or fixed thereto in any other adequate manner. The new device is suitable for doors which are suspended from above by the sliding rollers, and also for doors that rest upon roller arranged at the bottom.
The arangement and design of the parts of the new roller make it easy and cheap to manufacture, because it is only necessary to make a simple cylindrical hole in the solid block, which latter may be an` integral part of the fastening iron. No special bearing rings or bushes are required for the weight of this kind ofv will be jammed fast, so that in any case slid` ing friction, instead of rolling friction, will take place, and the door will be diiiicult to move. With the new arrangement, a type of ball-bearing for the travelling roller or ball results in which the carrying balls, i. e.
the balls forming the bearing, take both the verticalv and the horizontal bearing pressures and transfer them tothe walls of the device without the travellingball or roller coming into contact with the said wall. The whole horizontal pressure on the bearing is transferred in a direction vertical to the surfaces over which the balls roll. Y
