' The undergarment' of my invention may be an undergarment for the upper part of the body only, but I have herein chosen to represent .my invention as embodied in a union garment of knitted material. While I shall specifically describe the structure shown, I'desire it clearly to be understood that the invention is not limited to a union garment, nor to a knitted undergarment.

The undergarment is indicated generally at 1. It is preferably of knitted material, and the wales thereof extend longitudinally of the garment throughout the main portion thereof, excepting as hereinafter described. This gives great tranverse or lateral elasticity to the garment. Preferably I provide at least one knitted insert in the garment in which the wales extend transversely ofthe garment, so as to provide great'elasticity in' the direction longitudinally of the garment; For that purpose and as shown most clearly in Fig. 4, I insert a piece 2 of knitted material, wherein the wales extend transversely of the garment. WVhile I have shown the garment as adapted to have attached thereto a sanitary apron, it is to be understood that this latter feature may or maynot be employed, and my invention is not limited in this respect.

Having thusydescribed one illustrative em.- bodiment of my invention I desire it to be understood that although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the following claims: u

A knitted garment, the wales whereof in the main part of the garment extend longitudinally of the garment, the said garment having a knitted insert wherein the wales extend transversely of the garment, and tapes secured to said main part of the garment and extending substantially from the upper edge of the garmenttothe meeting cured to the inner face of the garment at front and rear, the wales'of'said tapes extending substantially longitudinally of the garment, and the rear tapes extending substantially tothe upper edge of the insert, said. tapes having at their lower ends tabs for the attachment of a sanitary member.

3. A union undersuit adapted to be worn next the flesh and having an opening at the rear, said garment being of knitted material and having the wales; extending longitudinally but providedacross theback with a knitted insert whereof the wales extend transversely, tapes secured to said. garment and extending from the upper edge of said garment downwardly at inclinations and meeting at front and rear, said tapes. being of knitted material with the wales thereof v extending longitudinally, and tabs for the reception of a sanitary member elastically secured to said tapes.
