Application filed May 15, 182%. Serial No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that; I HAROLD E. YoUNo, a citizen of the United States. residing at Minneapolis, in the county of l-lennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for ashing Automobiles, which the followingis a specification.
lvly invention relates to apparatus for washing automobiles and an ohjeco is to provide an apparatus by means of which the hubs, spokes ancl rims of automobile Wheels may be automatically Washed in an efficient and; expeditious manner While the body of the euiomobile is being; Washed. either hand or in e semi-automatic manner by means of a brush held in hoods and rosoteil o Water pressure. In washing cars om; m invention l.
by hand 2i amount is required to thoroughly clean the verioiis peris of ahe Wheels since iliese have numerous surfaces which. have to be gone o "er. in carrying provide a s'upgiorting or platform upon which automobiles fro;
may run and she wlieeis rotated While the i. mobile remains at rest. ihe
wheels rotate they are ecied upon. on both sides thereof by rotating" brushes supplied with \flliQl so that the washing is 11000 plislieil in a fraction oi the time that is required wt performed by hand.
The fol objects and advantages of my inveniionwill appear in connection with the detailed description thereof and the novel features embodied in m inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In ilie accompanying drawings, which illustrate the application of my invention Fig. l is a view in side elevation i the apfmratus with an automobile shown in position for Washing the a. Fig. 2 i a top plan View oi the iippiil'illlf-l. g5. is a front elevoiional view which the front Wheels of the mitoniohile ore shown in dotted lines. 4 is a low similar to Fig. 3 but showing tin -laning' brushes moved out of engagement with tho wl'ioels. Fig. 5 is a View in seetion on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig.5. 6 is a viev: in section on the line 66 of Fig. i. Fig. '7 is :1. detail view.
view show;-
Fig. 8 is a longitudinal sectional ing the manner in which an auroznohile wheel is supported. ,5 1g. 9 is a SECliOilill Fi is a detail view of a sligli inmlizi:
Specification of Letters Patent,
l2, and in ori'ler ihe some hell l shown. in are pro. each pair ihe mitorooi'iiie wheels i i ll. liiiOililiiEil in any eoiirenie at one eml of the pie, 1' (hi oi wl' belt with e. pul ey tudi'oel shaft oo' scoping; with each oe Jhe Slliift no:
26 in mes! ecured to Cl? h ,1 i i eured to :1 ire shaft 30 upon the outer end of which. one of the rollers 17. Seemed to ill'li shaft 22 near the other end thereof is a oevel gear- 32 111 mesh with :i bevel ear 34- secured to q shaft 36 upon each of the outer ends of wv neh is secured one of the rollers 1?. It
is, of course. obvious that the slieil. 30 may in similar manner be extended to her/h sides of the apparatus so as to .perete a roller 17 at both oi iis out this is not neces sary in case ihe-emomohile is so positioned that its rear is always brought shove ihe shaft 30 she relation of one of the rear wheels will rotale l'lie'oiher one. The members 16 are made sliiln'ble upon the members lo accommodate the apg'mreins 2o automobiles having clllierent wheel oases. ihe stationary members 12- are provided with a shaft 38 on each end of \vliirh is secured a reel or spool 40. One or hoili of these spools is provided with a hemllo 4-2 WlilCll-WllQll l'nrned winds up cables 44 the 'free emls of which are attached to the memhers 16. ii desire loppositely-attached eoliies may be used to pull ilie members 16 iirh 1' oineeieri lT J ii in. the opposite direction, but this is not necessary since when cars of different wheel bases are to be run upon the apparatus tor washing, the men ibers l6may be drawn up so that the respective rollers 17 are at a.
less distance from eaclf'other along the track than the length of the wheel base. When the front wheels dro between pairs of the rollers 17 the movab e frame will be carried along by the movement of the car until-the rear wheels drop between pairs of the rollers 17. In order that the rnovable frame may readily move in either direction it vis provided with tubular horizontal members .6 adapted to fit into central peripheral grooves in rollers 48 adapted to roll upon rods 50'which lit into spaced peripheral grooves in the rollers 48. Mounted for rotation. in contact with the wheels of the automobile when in washing position are pairs of upper brushes 52 and 54 and pairs of lower brushes" 56 and 58. The brushes 52and 54 engage the portion I ofthe wheel which is outward and is in upper position when rotating, while the brushes 56 and 58 engage the portion of 'the wheel which is inward and is in lower from the wheel on opposite sides thereof by operating a lever '74 pivoted at 76 to a I bracket 78. The brushes 52 and54 are mounted on arms 80 pivoted at 82 on the bracket 78, while the brushes -56 and 58 are mounted on arms'84 pivoted at 86 on the bracket The arms 80 and 84 are and the cooks are opened in order that water nected by links 88 attached to the arms 80 above the pivots 82 and attached to the arms 84 below the pivots 86. The operating lever 74 is pivoted at its lower end to a link 90, this link being pivoted to the lower end of one of the arms 80 and thelink 90 being extended and pivoted to one end of a rocker arm 92 pivoted at 94. and the other end of which is pivoted to a link 96 connected to the lower end of arm 80 on the side of the apparatus opposite the operating lever 74. On account of these various connections it will be apparent that when the handle is in the position shown in Fig. 3 the brushes will be in engagement with the wheels, and when the lever is moved to the position shown in Fig. ft the brushes will be moved away from the wheels. As shown in the (lra'-.vings,v the operating mechanism. for the brushes isthe same athoth ends of the apparatus. It is necessary to supply water to the brushes in order that they may thoroughl clean the wheels of the car, and it is also'dcsirabl'e to supply water con-. taining soap or other cleaning agent. therefore provide two tubes 98 and 100 for each pair of brushes, these tubes lying adjacent the brushes and extending parallel to the axes thereof. As shown in Fig. 9-the tubes are provided with a plurality of perforations 102 for directing watei' upon the brushes. Qne of the tubes is supplied. with plain water and the other is supplied with water containing soap or other cleaning agent by means of flexible tubing an and 106 connected tothe tubes 98 and 100, re-J spectively, the tubing being supplied by pipes 108 and 110 leading from any suitable source of supply, such as the waterniain, for the plain water and a tank elevated to provide a sufiicient head for the soapy water and the supply being controlled by suit able cocks. In Fig. 10 the rollers for sup porting the automobile wheels are shown mounted lower down in the channel members, the base portions of the latter being cutout for this purpose. Fig. 11 shows a desirable form of brush construction in which each pair of brushes such as 52 and 54 is made by winding mop cordsupon the axes of the brushes to form alternate large and small sections in such manner that the large and small sections of the pairs of brushes will come opposite each other respectively. v Y
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description. The automobile whichis to be" washed is run upon the supporting structure while the brushes foreach wheel are in their sepa ated position, as shown in Fig. 4c, reupr the levers 74 are operated to bring the brushes into the position shown in Fig. 3. The motor is then started to rotate the brushes and the wheels,
and soapy water may be supplied to the said brushes. I 2.
