Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. ill, 1922.,
Application filed June 25, 1920.. Serial No. 391,719.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. Josnrn P. lVixrnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Liverpool, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Dies for Drawing Rods. ires, Etc; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear. and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of the invention is to provide a comparatively simple and efiicient adjustable die holder for cold drawing benches and the like, adapted to withstand the strain to which devices for this general purpose are usually subjected, the elements of the chuck being so designed as to minimize difficulties in forging and machining the same, and with these'objects in view, the invention consists in aconstruction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a central sectional view of the chuck.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same.
Figure 8 is a sectional view on the plane indicated by the lines 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the chuck shell with the operating parts omitted.
Figure 5 is a detail view of one of the grip elements.
Figure 6 is a similar view of one of the operating wedges.
Figure 7 is a similar view of one of the guides for the grip elements.
Figure 8 is a similar view of one of the feed screw plates.
The chuck consists essentially of a shell 10 of substantially cylindrical form, preferably open at one end and flanged or peripherally reinforced as shown at 11, and closed at the other end with the exception of a central opening 12, grip elements or blocks 13 mounted in suitable guides 14 for radial sliding movement with relation to the shell,
' operating wedges 15 which are adapted to move the grip blocks toward and from the axis of the shell for engaging and disengaging the work, and means such as feed screws 16 for actuating said wedges. The guides 1a are secured to the closed end of the shell by means of machine screws 17 to the end that they may be independently replaced when necessary at a minimum expense, and are under cut or are provided with under out ways 18 for the reception of, the sliding heads 19 at the inner extremities of the grip blocks which are of'tapered or wedge shape complementing the shape of the operating wedges 15 and have an interlocking sliding connection therewith to the end that the movement of the wedges parallel with the axis of the shell or head will cause inward and outward radial movement of the grip blocks.
In the construction illustrated the grip blocks are provided with dove tailed tongues 20 for reception by the dove tailed grooves 21 in the operating wedges 15, and the latter have an inter-locking sliding connection with the walls of the shell or head as by being provided with dove tailed tongues 22 fitting in undercut or dove tailed grooves 23 in said walls, to insure the proper movement of the operating wedges in paths accurately parallel with the axis of the chuckhead or shell. The operating bolts or feed screws 16 are headed at their inner ends as shown at 24 to engage under cut slots 25 in the outer ends of the wedges and are threaded in guide openings 26 formed in feed plates 27 secured to the reinforced outer edges of the chuck head or shell by means of cap screws 28.
It will be seen that the interior of the head or the chuck shell is readily accessible for cleaning and repair and the several elements are readily dismountable from the head or shell and are detachable from each other so that in the event of injury of any of the parts they may be replaced without involving an expense other than that due to the injured elements and without necessitating the replacement of any other part.
Moreover the several elements may be readily assembled inasmuch as the removal of the feed plates 27 will permit of the disengagement of the feed screws from the operating wedges and the latter from thegrip blocks and consequently the dismounting of the latter from their guides.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed is:
1. In a die chuck, gripping means. a wedge for the gripping means. said wedge having a slot, a screw operable to slide the wedge and said screw having a portion extending into the slot to suspend the wedge.
2. In a chuck comprising a shell, gripping means, a wedge, said shell having a groove into which the wedge extends, said wedge overlapping the shell at the groove to prevent relative transverse movement of the Wedge and shell, said Wedge having a slot extending inwardly at its upper end, a screw mounted on the Chuck having a head "to extend into the slot of the Wedge to suspend the Wedge,'and a guide means Within the shell for the gripping means.
3. In a die chuck, a chuck member, grip ping means, a Wedge member for the grippingmeans, one of said members having a groove, the other member extending into the groove, overlapping means on one ofthe In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presenceof tWo Witnessesf v JOSEPH P. WINTERS.
