IMPROVEMENT lN PESSARIES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,253, dated July 29, 1873; application filed February 15, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, E. P. BANNING, Sr., of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Uterine Repositors, of which the following is a specification:

In the accompanying drawing. Figure 1 represents a vertical section through the tubularsocket attached to the pendent shaft of a uterine supporter. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of difi'erent shapes of repositors with straight or goose-necked shafts, and Fig. 4 a perspective view of a combination repositor.

Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.

The object of my invention is to so improve the arrangement and connection of uterine repositors with their pendent shaft that any desired repositor suitable to the special position of the uterus may be applied, relieving thereby any undue pressure on the same and protecting against irritation and ulceration. The restoration of a healthier tone of the relaxed tissues is thereby promoted, and the annoying and painful action of insufiicientlyshaped repositors avoided. The invention consists in the improvement of pessaries by providing the adjustable stem with a ring jointed to the support at one point only.

A in the drawing represents the tubular socket, which is placed at the end of the pendent shaft B. It is placed on the cylindrical exterior a thereof, gliding thereon by means of a groove, b, and projecting pin 5 of the lower end of socket A. A spiral spring, cl, placed in suita ble connection with the cylindrical end b and socket A, allows a receding motion of the same, and, consequently, the adj ustment of the repositors connected with the socketto theexpandin g and contracting movements of the uterus. A small set-screw, e, is placed into the rim at the upper end of socket A, and serves for the purpose of holding firmly the stems of the repositors. The repositors of any of the known forms, whether of T, cup, annular, or other shape, are provided with straight or goose necked stems f, with notches g, on which setscrew 0 acts, so that the adjustment of the repositors may be obtained at any desired heightabovesocketA. Theinsufficientadaptation of one fixed repositor is, therefore, avoided, and a rational treatment of the uterus made possible in the varying stages of pro lapsus. By connecting the notched stem f,

whether straight or goose-necked, by means of a hinge-joint, h, to the annular or concave repositor B, the same is lifted higher at the side to which the stem is applied, the 0th r side being inclined, and may, therefore, be used to advantage for different positions of the uterus in flexion and version. By combining a T-shaped repositor, by means of a thin piece, i, of spring-steel, with the hingedstein annular repositor, so that the screw-end of piece 73 passes into the T-repositor, making the same adjustable thereon, another set of repositors for ante and retroversion and flexion is obtained, which overcomes several obstacles to which the plain repositors do not pp y- A great part of the pain and discomfort of a uterine supporter .may, by the suitable application of a series of different repositors with hinged stems secured to the yielding socket, be obviated, irritations and other inconveniences be relieved at the will of the patient, and the use of uterine supporters be greatly extended.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1 The adjustable stem, combined with a ring, jointed to the support at one point only, as and for the purpose described.
