Safety Catch, or' which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The present invention relates to an imv proved device for automatically stopping a shade roller or other rotating member should same exceed a predetermined speed ot rotation in one direction, and the invention aims to provide a novel contrivance ot that character, which is extremely simple and inexpensive in its construction, as well as being practical and efficient.
The present device'isintended especiallyT for use with window shade rollers to prevent the roller from escaping and winding the shade up too fast, such as is apt yto tear the shade, to cause annoyance in pulling the shade down, etc., as well known, although. the device can be'usediioruother purposes to check or arrest the movement ot a rotatingmember should the samerotate above an allotted speed. l
The invention has for a more specific object, the provision of a novel device of that kind, including` a catch to be carried by the shade roller bracket or other stationary part and a second member to be secured to and kcarried by the roller or other rotary member for cooperation with the catch, whereby said catch is caused to stop the roller or member should same exceed a predeterminedspeed. of rotation in one direction, such as in winding up a window shade, or the like.
With the foregoing and other objects iny view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides 1n the construction and arrangementof parts hereinaiter described and claimed, it being underypanying drawing, wherein stood that changes can be made' within the scope of what is claimed without departing`l from the spirit of the invention.

Although, for purpose or' showing one embodiment ofl the invention, the device is shown as used for a window shade roller, it will be understood that the device can be used for other kindred purposes. ln the drawing, the numeral 7 designates the shade roller upon which the window shade 8 is wound to be pulled downwardly and unwound from the roller, as usual, and such roller being yusually splingactuated to wind up the shade, as well known: A pin or spindie 9 isdriven into orl otherwise secured to one end or the roller kand is rotatable within the bracket10, whichv may represent any suitableV stationary part to carry'the catch as hereinafter more :fully described. As shown, a metal errule'or cap is fitted over the end of the roller.

such catch having an upper tripper arm 19 to rest or bear on the member 12, and a lower stop arm 2O below or at the opposite side of said member 12. The recess between the arms 19 and 2O is rounded for the rotation of said member 12 therein, and the arm 19 is provided with a cam lug 21 near the eX- tremity thereoil and at the lower side, to bear on the member 12. The lug 21 lies in grasping the shade, or should the shade let go for any other reason, then. ordinarily the roller would rotate :it a high rate of speed to wind up the shade, which would possibly damage or tear the shade, in addition to causing annoyance. However, with the present device, should the roller 7 rotate above a predetermlned safe speed, the tripping cams 15 in moving at a high speed past the lug 21, will throw the catch 17 upwardly with sufficient force, to raise the stop arm 20 into the path of one of the shoulders 16, thereby stopping the roller in the manner depicted in Fig. 3.V Thus, referring. to Fig. 2, the cam 15 which is moving intoengagement with the lug 21 in moving at a sufficiently high speed, will cause the catch 17 to be swung upwardly with a sharp movement so that the arm 2() will be engaged by the shoulder 16 opposite to the cam 15 which is `eltlgaging the lug 21, thereby stopping the roller. owever, during normal rotation cf the roller to wind up the shade, the catch 171is not thrown upwardly with sufiicient force to catch the member 12, or the upward swin 'ng movement of the catch may be sufiiciently slow so that the shoulder 16 asses the end of the arm 20 before the catch 1s completely raised, so that the catch will gravitate before the other shoulder 16 reaches the arm 20. By properly forming the ln 21, the action of the catch 17 will be suc as to stop the roller immediately when it rotates above a predetermined speed in winding up the shade, although there is no interference with the rotation of the' roller below such allotted speed.
By securing the member 12 to the end of the roller, and pivoting the catch 17 to bracket or member 10, the device is readily installed, and requires only a slight space or clearance between the end of the roller and bracket. As shown, the catch is returned by gravity to releasing position, but it may be spring-returned, aswill be obvious to themechanic as equivalent ofgravity operation. v
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. A device of vthe character described comprising a rotary member to rotate with a shade roller or the like, and a movable nonrotatable catch supported apart from said member and roller', said catch and member having cooperable portions to stop said member and catch having portions to ccn-V tact and stop said member and having other portions cooperable for swinging said catch to bring the aforesaid portions into engage ment when the member rotates above a predetermined speed in winding up the shade.

A device of the character described comprising a rotary member to move with a shade roller or the like,` a pivota11y` mounted non-rotatable catch supported apart from said member and roller, said member and catch having cooperable cam portions to swing the catch according to the speed of rotation of said member, and said catch and member having cooperable portions to engage one another and stop said member when said member exceeds a predetermined speed of rotation in winding up the shade.
