To all whom t may concer-a:
Be it known that I, Mrs. ILE WINTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stringtown, in the county of Atoka and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Envelopes, of which the following isa specification.
The object of the present invention is the production of an envelope which cannot be opened without detection.
The drawings illustrate the improvement.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view of the envelope folded, and looking toward the back thereof.
Figure 2 is a sectional view approximately on the line 2`2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing the arrangement of parts when the envelope is to receive the letter sheet therein.
Figure 5 is a view of the blank from which the envelope is formed.
My improved envelope includes a body portion 1 which is scored to provide opposed flaps 2 and 3 and 8 and 9 respectively. The flap 2, has one of its edges provided with a substantially V-shaped tongue 5 that has on its outer edge a coating of mucilaginous material 13. The flap 3, has a corner projection 7, and is formed with a V-shaped extension in the nature of a tongue 6 which Vis of a greater width and length than the tongue 5. Both the tongues 5 and 6 are foldable on the respective flaps 2 and 3. The tongue 6, in a line with the edge of the flap 3 on which it is formed has a slot 4 therethrough of a size to receive the tongue 5. The tongue 6, on its outer face has its edges provided with a mucilaginous substance 14. The flap 8 has its inner edges provided with a gummed or mucilaginous substance 8', and the said fiap is centrally provided with a Vfshaped incision providing the center thereof with a tongue 10, and the said tongue on its inner face has its edges gummed. The flaps 8 and 9 are V-shaped -in plan. rhe flap 9, however, is of a materially greater length than the flap 8, the outer portion thereof being provided with a longitudinal score and the portion of the flap 9 outward of the score provides what I will terni a tongue and which is designated by the numeral 11. In assembling the envelope, the flap 2 is first bent over the body 1. The Hap 3 is then bent over the flap 2. The tongue 5 is passed through the slot 4L in the flap 6 and is adhesively connected to the outer face of the said flap. Thereafter the tongue 6 and the tongue 5 which is connected thereto, are bent inwardly against the inner face of the body 1, and the gummed surface 14 on the said Hap 6 is adhesively connected to the said body. 'The flap 8 is then bent over the aps 2 and 3, and adhesively secured thereto. This leaves the envelope in a position to receive the letter sheet. When the sheet is arranged in the envelope the flap 9 is bent over the flaps 2, 3 and 8 and adhesively secured thereto. The tongue 11 is then inserted in the opening` provided in the flap 8 by the arrangement of the tongue 10 at the center thereof and is adhesively connected to the tongues 5 and 6. This leaves the flap 10 in a position to be brought over the flap 9 and adhesively secured thereto. The envelope is of a simple construction which may be cheaply manufactured, and the manner in which the parts constituting the same are formed for interengagement and for adhesive connection positively prevents the surreptitious opening of the envelope, and in fact the envelope cannot be opened even by an authorized person without tearing or mue tilating the parts constituting the same so that such attempt will be rendered perfectly obvious. y
Having thus described the invention, what I claim, is
An envelope including a body having side and end flaps, each of the end flaps having one of their edges formed with a V-shaped tongue, one of said tongues being of a greater length and width than the other, and both of the tongues being gummed, the wider tongue, at its center and in a line with the edge of the body having an opening therethrough for the passage of the tongue ofthe other end Hap, when the fiaps are folded over the body, said tongues, when in such position designed to be bent inwardly and the larger tongue adhesively connected to the inner face of the body, both' of the side flaps being V-shaped and gummed, one of the side flaps being provided with a V-shaped slit forming a tongue which has its edges gummed, said last mentioned flap being designed to be folded over the end flaps and adhesively connected thereto3 the other side flap having a score line adjacent to itsouter provided by the tongue formed on the latter edge to provide the said outer edge with a andto be adhesivel connected to the larger 10 ton ue, said last mentioned flap designed to tongue ofthe'end p, and the tongue of the be olded over the first mentioned side flap first mentioned side flap adapted to be folded und the end flaps and to be adhesively 'conover the last mentioned side fla-p and adhenected thereto, the ton e on the last mensively secured thereto.
