Application filed September 21, rear.- Serial No. en ire. f
To all whom it may com-em.
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. PoLLooK, a citizen of the United States, residin at New York cit in the county of New ork and State of ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a.
Cigar or Cigarette Holder,' of'which the following is a specification.
he invention relates to a cigarette or cigar holder, and more class of holders adaptable for ejecting the stump of a cigar or cigarette from the holder.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a holder of this character, wherein a cigar or cigarette can be conveniently held therein during the smoking of the same, and when the said cigar or cigarette has been spent or it is desired to dislodge the same from the holder the stump can be readily ejected without possibility of the clogging of the socket in the holder which ordinarily-occurs when an attempt is made to remove the stump therefrom by an instrument, the holder being of novel form to assure the proper draught without possibility of leakage to assure a comfortable smoke in the use of said holder.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a holder of this character, wherein the parts thereof are assembled in a compact manner and the said holder can be readilymanipulated for the instant ejecting of a stump of a cigar or cigarette therefrom, the fresh cigarette or cigar being firmly held within the holder for the smoking thereof without the possibility of the accidental dropping of said cigar or cigarette from the holder.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a holder of this character, wherein the parts can be readily separated from each other when it is required to clean the holder or to overcome any irregularity in the working thereof or when the occasion requires the replacing of new parts.
A. still further object of the invention is the provision of a holder of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in its purpose, neat and attractive 1n appearance, strong, durable and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of conand pointed out in the particularly to that struction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings claim hereto appended. I
lln the accompanying drawing:
F igure 1 is a perspective view of constructed in accordance with the invent1on showing a cigarette therein.
F1gure 2 is an enlarged vertical longitud nal sectional view through the holder.
Flgure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the holder adjusted for ejecting the stump of the cigarette or cigar therefrom.
Figure ft is a sectional view on the line 4--4 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows. 1
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of vthe drawings.
, Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates generally the holder which is constructed for receiving a cigarette on cigar, althoughjn thedrawing, Figure 1 thereof shows a cigarette B placed within the holder.
The holder comprises a mouth piece 5, which is in the form of a stem having a tapered end portion 6, provided with a mouth terminal 7 which is constructed in the usual manner so as toenable the'stem or mouthplece 5 to be gripped within the mouth of the user by the teeth so as to avoid the dropping of the holder from the mouth in the use thereof. 7 I 1 Formed.centrally in the stem or mouthplece 5 is a longitudinal bore or passage 8, while in the outer end of said stem or mouthpiece is an internally threaded socket 9 intersected by the bore or passage 8 for the detachable connection of the main body member 10 therewith.
a holder,
The body member 10 is formed with an inwardly tapered socket 11 in its outer end for accommodating a cigar or cigarette, the
socket 11 being of a size for the snug en- 100 gagement of t cigar or cigarette therein, while the opposite end portion of said body member is formed with a recess or chamber 12, correspondingly shaped to the stem or mouth-piece 5 which is slidably therein, the edge of the end of the body member 10 formed with the recessed chamber 12 being provided with an external enlargement or annular bead 13 to materially reinforce the same, and
telescoped to act as a finger within the wrapper of the cigar I cigarette snugly abuts the. flat outer face grip for the proper manipulation of the parts of the holder in the accomplishment oi the desired objects and purposes of the invention.
The body member 10 is formed with an intermediate web 14 separating the socket 11 and the recess or chamber 12 and this web is formed with a central aperture through which is passed an ejecting-nozzle 15 of tubiform, the outer end being formed with an annular external flange constituting the ejecting head 16, while the inner end is screw-threaded at 17 for the detachable engagement thereof in the internally threaded socket 9 in the stem or mouth-piece and in this manner the latter and the body member 10 are detachably assembled relative to each other. Formed in the web 14 at the inner end of the socket 11 is a counterseat 18 to accommodate the ejecting head 16 so that the same will be flush at its outer surface with the inner end of the socket 11 when the stem or mouthpiece 5 and the body member 10 are distended relative to each other and thus avoiding any interference with the insertion of the cigar or cigarette within the socket 11 as is clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings.
It is to be here noted that the socket 11 is tapered inwardly toa very slight degree, butsuificiently to effect a compression of the extreme inner end of the cigar or cigarette inserted within the same, whereby the fiat compressed inner end of the tobacco or the ejecting head16, while the end edge of the paper wrapper abuts the wall of the annular shoulder formed by the counterseat 18, and out of contact or alinement with the ejector head 16.
Contained within the recess or chamber 12 concentrically of the ejecting nozzle is a coiled expansion spring 19 which has one end resting against the web 14 and its opposite end engaged against the stemor mouth-piece 5 and this spring functions to hold the said mouth-pieceor stem and body member extended relative to each other which is the normal condition of the holder.
In the use of the holder the cigar or cigarette is inserted in the socket 11 in the body member 10 as shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing and after the smoking of said cigar or cigarette should it be desired to remove the stump or butt end portion thereof from the holder, the user thereof forces the stem or mouth-piece 5 inwardly of the body member 10 progressing the ejector nozzle 15 so that its ejecting head 16 acts upon the compressed tobacco center of the butt or stump of the cigar or cigarette forcing the same from the socket 11, and thereby ejecting said stump or butt from the holder.
iVhen pressure is released from the mouthpiece or stem 5 the spring 19 which has been previously compressed, ex ands to extend the mouth-piece or stem 5 rom the position shown in Figure 3 to that shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. It is to be noted that it very often happens that the wrapper of a cigar or cigarette, and particularly of the latter, will stick or otherwise adhere to the wall of the socket or bore 11, so that, if the ejecting head 16 were to engage the end of the wrapper, in its movement of ejection, there would be a tendency toward a tearing of the wrapper in a manner to leave portions of the same adhering to the wall of the socket and to otherwise efiect a jamming of the head against full ejecting movement, and, consequently, by having the head 16 act against the compressed tobacco center only, the forcing action of the same outwardly of the wrapper tends to draw the latter inwardly and away from the wall of the socket or bore 11, whereby to free the same for the discharge of the entire butt or stump from the holder and in a manner to reduce the possibility of the tearing of the same to a minimum, such as would otherwise result in the leaving of portions of the wrapper adhering to the wall of the socket or bore 11. It is also to be noted that byzthe provision of the enlargement or annular bead 13, on 'theinner end, of the holder section 10, the ejecting operation may be readily-ac'complished by the use of one hand only and this is to be done by the gripping of the holder section 10 betweenthe first and second fingers of either hand at a point immediately in frontof bead, and exerting a pushing action on the mouth terminal of the stem section or mouth piece 6, in which case, the bead 13 presses against the fingers grasping the holder section 10 and prevents the holder from slipping during the ejecting operation. The parts of the holder A are assembled in a compact manner so that there is no leakage in drawing upon the cigar or cigarette in the smoking thereof in the holder. The holder in its make-up is neat and attractive in appearance and the same can be made from any desirable material.
Surrounding the outer end of the body member 10 is a facing rim 20, which reinforces this end of the body member and ornaments the holder.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the holder will be clearly understood and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is:
A holder as characterized, comprising a stem portion formed to provide a mouthpiece at one end, a holder portion formed at one end to provide a socket for telescopioally receiving the opposite end of said stem,
and a slightly and inwardly tapered socket at its opposite end for the insertion therein of a cigar or cigarette, said holder portion having its cigar or cigarette receiving socket formed to provide a counter-seat at its inner end and an annular shoulder portion adapted to be abutted by the wrapper portion of the inserted cigar or cigarette, an ejector device carried by said stem and extending into the cigar or cigarette receiving socket of said holder portion, a flat head portion formed on the outer end of said ejector device and normally seated within the said counterseat, a spring Within said stem receiving socket and acting to spread said holder and stem-portion apart, and an annular bead formed on the inner end of said holder portion andacting as a finger grip for facilitating the manipulation of the parts for the actuation of said ejector, the head portion of said ejector being adapted to contact the compressed tobacco center of the cigar or cigarette during the operative movement of said ejector, whereby to effect an inwardly pulling strain on the wrapper portion thereof to free the same from the wall of the socket of said holder portion.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature hereto.
SAMUEL W. POLLOOK.
