Description

H. C. MANN..
LIQUID FUEL BURNER.
APPLlcAnoN msn no v. a, 1920.
Patented Mar. 28, 1922.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAROLD CORNWALLIS MANN, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGN OR 0E ONE-HALF T0 THE CHEMICAL ENGINEERING AND WILTONS PATENT FURNACE COMPANY LIMITED,
OF HENDON, LONDON, ENGLAND.
` LIQUID-FUEL BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented llIaJl. 2S, 1922.
Application led November 8, 1920. Serial No. 422,649.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HARoLD CouNwALLis MANN, of 48 Normanton Avenue, VVimbledon Park, London, England, a. subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Liquid-I `uel Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to liquid fuel burn ers of the type described in patent specication 22753/1904 in which fuel air and steam pass through a central tube in the burner, the fuel being atomized by a helical blade and by a blast of steam which passes through an annular orifice at the nozzle. v
The object of this invention is to provide an improved burner of this type.
According to this invention the steam7 air and fuel pass into the central tube through a Venturi tube.
The drawing filed herewith" is a longitudinal section of one form of burner made in accordance with this invention c is a Venturi tube, Y) a steam jet, ca liquid fuel cup to admit fuel and air to the Venturi tube, l is a spreader, e a spiral vane around the spreader c', j' is an annular orifice for the fuel and steam. g is an external tube to which steam is admitted at L, y' j are orificesv for the steam arranged round the annular' orifice j. g is an annular chamber between the external tube and the Venturi tube.
The coned shaped spreader e tends to increase thevelocity of the mixture of air steam and fuel after it has passed through the Venturi construction and counteracts the loss of velocity due to the friction of the spiral vane e.
In use the oil being fed into the cup c carries with it suiiicient air for the complete combustion of the fuel and the steanrissit ing from the jet b and passing round the spiral vane e draws the fuel along with it and atomizes it, the atomization being 'further effected by the coned spreader and bv the steam issuing from the oriiices y' j.
This steam therefore, serves the purpose `of an injection of water vapour into the flame thereby assisting the complete combustion of the fuel in the furnace by being split flame when issuing from the spreader in the i Yenturi tube.
What I claim and desire to secure by Let g ters Patent is n In a liquld fuel burner, an external tube,
. a Venturi tube within the external tube and spaced therefrom to form an annular chamber between the said tubes, means for admitting fuel and air to the Venturi tube,
HAROLD CORNVVALLIS MANN. I
