To all 70/!01/ it may con ern Be it known that I. Join: J. Time. a citizen of the United States. residing at Chinese. in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful :l1n provements in Buttons of which the tol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to detachable huttons or garment fastenings and his for its primary object to provide detachable button or the like of simple and improvml construction, which can be readily attached to or detached from a garment or fabric, and which will not become accidentally detached.
A. further object is to provide detachable fastening means for a button of this type, which may be made small. relative to the size of the button. and also which may be employed on small buttons without rendcring the same bulky or inartistic.
The invention. consists in the novel constructions, arrangements and. devices to be hereinafter described and claimed, for carrying out the above stated objects and such other objects as will appear from the following description.
The invention is illustrated in certain pre ferred embodiments in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective of a button with the fastening device in open position.

For the purpose of illustrating the inven tion I have illustrated the button 10 as comprising a facing 11 and back B the facing being bent over along its edge, shown at 18, to enclose the edge of the back 12. It is obvious that the facing 11 may be of any suitable size or material and he provided Specification of Letters Patent.

The other end 17 is provided with a lateral extension or arm 18, sul'istantially at right angles thereto. The end of the extension 18 is provided with an otfset portion 19 which in the construction shown is in the form of a right-angled bend. When applied to a button the extension 18 is positioned between the back plate 1 and. the body of the button, the portion 17 of the loop passing through an opening 20 in the plate 12, which is of sufficient size to permitthe rocking of the fastening device. as hereinafter pointed out. i The offset portion 19 prevents the rocking of the fastening device when in the position shown in. Fig. 2,-by reason of the part 19 being then in contact with the plates 11 and 12, and maintains the hook 15 in up right or closed position. The plate 12 is also provided with a recess or opening 21 into which the portion 19 may project when the fastening device is rotated or swung a quarter turn in counterclockwise direction in 2 to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 8. In this normalopening position of the hook member the portion 19 is-not engaged by the plate 12 and the fastening device may be rocked about the extension 18, so as to raise the point 16 above or out of. contact with the plate 12, sufficiently to permit th. button to be aliixed to a garment or fabric. If desired, the point 16 of the fastening device may be brought into the recess 21 when the same is in closed position, so as to more adequately close the loop formed by the fartening device and prevent the button from becoming unfastened, as well as concealing the point 16. Because of the resilient chain actor of the plate 12, theportion 19 may be slightly wedged between the plate and the button 11, so as to firmly lock the book 15 in closed position. It should be noted that the recess 21 need not be an opening; through the plate 12. it being snflicient merely to provide su'liicient space for the portion 19 so that-the same may rotate therein to permit the opening of the fastening device.

The body of the button is preferably constructed as in the forms previously described and conu ;n1ise a front portion 22 and a back portion or plate 23. In the form shown in (3 the back portion provided. with a pair of stationary hooks 34: spaced a short distance apart. and secured in position in any suitable" manner to the plate 23. Opposite these hooks and positioned so as to he between them a movable hook provided with extensions 26 extending therefrom, substantially at right angles, and preferably of noncircular cross section. T he extensions 26 are positioned between the plate 23 and the front portion 22 and are arranged to hold the book 25 in vertical position by reason of the resilient pressure of the plate 23. The hooks 24; and 25 are pointed, as shown at 27, and terminate a considerable distance above the back of the button. W hen the same are in closed position. as shown in Fig. 6, they form together a closed loop. The movable hook 25 may be rocked about its extension 26 so to open this loop, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 8. The stationary hooks 2d: serve not only to form a closed loop, but to prevent a solid pull upon the hook from opening this hook and permitting an accidental detachment of the button.

in this modification only one stationary book 28 is en'iployed. The movable book 29 is constructedlike that in the form shown in Fig. 6. For the purpose of convenient illustration of these constructions I have shown the spacing between the stationary erated. In practice the pointed extremit of the movable hook will lie, when in closed position, as close as may be to the stationary hook.
