to exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a fuel supply system'for internal combustion engines and 15 has for its principal ohfiect to provide a system of this character wherein gasolcne may be used to initially start the cngrinc after which kerosene may he used as a motor fuel. It is of course to be understood that my improved construction of fuel supply system may be used in connection with internal combustion en ines having an intake manifold and a car ureter of any well known or standard construction, however, in this instance, I have shown my fuel supply system arranged in connection with an internal combustion engine having a kerosene vapor izing intake manifold, such as is shown and described in my application Serial 109,437 filed July 15, 1916.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the reference numeral 1 indicates the intake manifold which is connected to the engine 2 and is provided with a lateral extension 3 to which is connected the lateral extension 4 of the curbureter 5.
A three-way valve (3 is tapped through the vertical wall of the carburetor and consists of a casin 7 having oppositely disposed arms 8 and!) and an externally threaded nipple 10 which is threaded through the vertical wall of the carbureter. llotatahly mounted within the casing 7 is avalve it having a three-way passage 12 extending through it in a horizontal plane and adapted to selectively register with the extensions 8 and 10 of the casing for a purpose whichr will presently appear.
One end of the gasolcne supply pipe 13 is comicctcd to the extension arm 9 by a union nut it while the other end of the supply pipc is connected to a gasolcnc reserve or supply tank 15.
The extension arm 8 has one end of thc kerosene supply pipc it; connected to it through the medium of a union nut 17 while the opposite end of the kerosene supply pipe is connected to a main supply tank 18.
The upper end of the valve 11 is provided with a valve stem 1!) which carries a head 2!) provided with a pair of diametrical openings through which projects the forked end 21 of an operating rod 22 that extends up wardly through the dash 23 of the motor vc hicle and is provided with an operating handle 124 by which the valve 11 may he rotated to selectively establish connnunication between either the kerosene or gasolcne sup ply tanks and the carburetor.
casing 26, the lower end of which is provided with a pair of diverging legs 27 ahd 28 in which are arranged check vulvcs and 30 respectively. The leg 27 of the pump has one end of a conveyor pipe 3? connected to it by a union nut 3:2 while the other end connected to the kerosene supply pipe 16 by u T-coupling The other leg of the pump has one end of a conveyor pipe 34 connected to it by it union nut 35 wl lo the other end of the conveyor pipe is co elected to the drain rock 36 of the carburetor, this drain cork being common to all carburetors.
A piston 37 is arranged within the pump casing 26 and is provided with an operating handle 38.
In the operation of tho device when it desired to initially start the engine the valve 11 is rotated so as to close comunicuticm between the supply pipes 13 and 16 and the co 1'- bureter, or if desired the valve may he rotuted so as to close communication between the supply pipe 16 and the carburetor and establish communication between the supply pipe 13 and the curluircteia When the valve has been so tu'rned and set, the pump 25 may be actuated so as to draw all of the lacrosenc or heavier hydrocarbon from the curbureter and suhserpaently pump it hack into the kerosene suppl tunlr, the vacuum in the carburetor created by this action will draw in an initial charge of gasolenc through the supply pipe '13 and fill the carburetor for an initial starting of the engine It is of course to he understood that in order to effectively pump the kerosene from the curburcter hack into the kerosene supply tank 18 that the check valve 30 must neces sarily open inwardly while the check valve 29 opens outwardly under the action oi the piston '37. 1
After the motor has been started-and be comes sutlieiently heated, the operating handle 24 is turned so as to I'Otuto the valve 11 to sh n1 oil c-omunicution between the gasolene supply pipe 13 and the carburetor und cmnection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of construction and the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which this in vention relates, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, I desire to have it understood that such changes in construction and arrangement of pa rts may be made when desired as are within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a corbureter rovided with a feed reservoir, connections therefor to u gasolene source ofsup ly and to o kerosene source of supply, inter upendcnt valve mechanism for con-trolling said connections, whereb either fuel supply may he connected to sai reservoir and the other thereby cut ed, a pump, and connections for said pump to said feed reservoir and kerosene supply, Whereb the fuel may he with drawn from said fee reservoir by said pump and returned to said kerosene supply.
2. The combination of a carburetor, provided with a feed reservoir, 'se urate pipes therefrom to a gasolene source 0 supply and to u kerosene source of supply, valve mechanism for controlling saul pipes whereby either fuel supply may be connected to said fccd reservoir and the other cut oil, a pump, and connections for said pump to said feed reservoir and to the kerosene supply ipe whereby the fuel may be withdrawn rom said feed reservoir by said pump and returned to said kerosene supply through said kerosene supply pipe.
