HINGE.
APPLICATWN FILED NOV. 5| 1920.

A TTHNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
FRANZ A. FULLER, 0F NEWARKyNEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T0 THE J. E. MERGOTTL COMPANY, OF` NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, A CORlPQRATION OF DELAWARE.
Application filed November To all 107mm t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANZ A. FULLER, a. citizen of the United States, residing in Newark, `in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, ot' which'the Jfollowing isa speciiication.
The main object of this invention is to provide a novel typeof hinge, particularly adapted ior useV in connecting the lids or cover tothe bodies oi' a metal receptacle.
Other objects are to provide af hinge the side-elementsof which are integral with the cover and body respectively, but so arranged as to require no material other than that contained in the normal blanks for these parts; .toavoid the use of rivets, solder or like fastening means; to provide u. hinge that when assembled forms part of the wall of the container, acting as a reeni'orcement and presenting no opening for the passage of air or matter; and iinally, to provide a hinge of exceptional strength, iniexibility and neatness of appearance.
These objects are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement oi parts, hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a conventional type of round metal box and lid united by a hinge made in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a. similar view of the lid in detail.
Figure 3 is a like view of the box body in detail.
Figure 4 is an enlarged plan view of the box and lid shown in an open position.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the hinge bearing or connecting element in detail.
Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of the box, lid and hinge, the lid being raised.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary view of the hinge and its attached parts, looking from the interior of the box.
Referring to the drawings in detail the numeral 10 designates the bod of a common Vtype of small metallic container, the same having a bottom 11 and provided with a bead 12 at its lower edge, a similar bead 14 being formed annularly around its circum- Specica-tion of Letters Patent.
HINGE.
Patented Mar. '7, 1922.
5, 1920. serial No. 421,840.
the material of the flange is 4slit..andpressed v outward, forming a pair of outstanding ,lugs 20 containing small ,round openings 21, the lugs having their edges curved in conformity wit-h the axis ofthe openings, which arein alignment, and an open space 22 presented between the lugs, as bestshown in Figure 2.
VThe box body portion 15 has .fa similar cut-out 24 having outstanding curved lugs 25 containing aligned pertorations 26, the lugs or ears 25 being spaced apart so as to neatly lit between the corresponding parts 20 of the lid. y
The connecting element, as shown in detail in Fig. 5, is comprised oif a single flat blank oit' sheet metal formed to present a tubular element 28 in length just sufficient to fill the space between the lugs 25 of the box body.
Extending' from the longitudinal joint of the tube are two plate connections 29 tightly pressed together these elements being coincident'in length with the tube and terminating in oppositely disposed flanges 30, curved to agree with the inner diameter of the box body and increased in length to ex tend over the opening 24 and slightly past the lugs 25, when assembled on the box body, the arrangement being best seen in Figs. 6 and 7.
When so assembled a hinge pin 31 is passed through the perforations in the lugs of both lid and body and also through the tube 28 forming a neat, strong and eifective hinge, the axis of which is so positioned as to permit the lid to be reversed upon the pin, allowing full acc-ess to the box, and when the lid is closed, presents Vno openings for the passage of matter. Y
In the case of a rectangular box it is apparent that two or more of the hinges may be applied as may be required,
Il" the hinge be properly proportioned to the receptacle it will be found exceptionally stift to resist lateral pressure, causing the lid to correctly center with the body of the box. Y
Another feature is that the lid is held resiliently when in a closed position, due to the engagement of the outer ends l9 of the recess 19, on the upper part l54 ol.i the-box, the tension of the flange being exerted when the lid is raised and which sullices to inainf tain the lid in engagement when snapped shut during ordinary handlii'lg, inrluding reversing the normal position ol? the box.
It is also noticeable'that the upper eleinent of the langes BO'extends above the edge'ot the box so as to completely cover the opening 22 between the lugs 2O when the lid is closed.
In applying the binge it is to be noted that the lugs 25 `are held in compression between the ends of the hinge pin and over- .'lyingends of the lianges 30, the'elernents 29 being in tension so as to hold the connecting element firmly in position and without affecting freedomV of lid movement, no extraneous securing means being` required.
The disclosure is to be regarded as de scriptive only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously 'an embodiment may be constructed including' many minor modifications without departing fronrthe general scope herein indicatcd and denoted. in the appended claims:
l. A hinge for connecting a lid to a container, comprising spaced paired lues eX- tending respectively :from the lid'` an( container', one pair being embraced Within the other, there being open spaces between the lugs, a tube disposed between the inner pair of lugs, )rejections formed with said tube extendingV4 through the openspace in the container and flanges at the inner ends ot said projections adapted to engage the 1nterior of thel container7 theends of said Y vflanges extending past the bases of said lugs This specification signed and witnessed tais fourth day of November, 17920.`
