To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, Ennnsr Gr. Sornmrnn and CHARLES HnwsoN, both citizens of the United States. and residents of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification. I

This invention relates in general to toys,

and has more particular reference to that type in which an object is projected from a box or cabinet upon release of the cover.

One of the novel characteristics of our invention resides in the provision of a cabinet which is preferably constructed to resemble a miniature phonograph provided with a handle or crank such as is customarily employed in winding up a phonograph. and upon the inside of the cabinet is mounted suitable mechanism operated by the crank by which the cover may be released so as to permit the forcible projection from the cabinet of some object which will, to the surprise of the person to whom the toy is handed, appear upon manipulation of the crank instead of a musical reproduction which would naturally be expected, from the appearance of the toy.

In order to facilitate an understanding of our invention, we have illustrated on the accompanying drawing a preferred embodiment thereof, from an inspection of which, when considered in connection with the following description, the invention and many of its desirable attributes should be readily appreciated.

Referring to the drawings:

Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view through a toy embodying our invention;

Fig. 8 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

By reference to the drawings, it will be observed that the cabinet, which is preferably made of sheet metal, is made in semblance of a miniature phonograph and comprises the body portion 4: supported upon the legs 5 and provided with a cover 6 hinged at 7 and normally urged into open position by a spring 8 coiled about the hinge pin 7 with one end resting against the inner surface of the cabinet body, and the other end against the inner surface of the cover, as shown in Fig. 1. The position that the cover will assume under the influence of the spring 8 when released is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.

Beneath the cover within the cabinet, there is hinged upon a transverse rod 9 a plate or shelf 11, which is also urged into the upright position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 by a spring 12 coiled about the rod 9, one end of the spring engaging the forward wall of the cabinet and the other end engaging beneath the plate 11, as will be apparent from the drawings.

Upon the plate 11. there is disposed any suitable object 18, such as a collapsible figure, for instance, or any other relatively light object which, when the cover is released so that it assumes its open position, will be projected upwardly from the cabinet by the plate 11, as the plate rapidly moves under the influence of the spring 12 from the full line to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1.

The cover is adapted to be locked in closed position by a pivoted latch 14 fulcrumed at 15 upon the front wall of the cabinet, the upper end of the latch being formed to provide a hook 16 adapted to engage an eye 17 secured to the interior of the cover. The lower end or tail of the latch is bent toprovide a loop 17 by which the latch is swung on its pivot through. the instrumentality of a member 18 slidably mounted upon a transversely extending rod 19 and having one arm 21 engaged with the loop 17, and the other arm 22, which projectsupwardly. engaged with convolution of a spiral 28 preferably formed of wire and rotatably mounted at its ends in the side walls of the cabinet so that the axis of the spiral is disposed in substantial parallelism with the rod 19. One end of the spiral is equipped with a crank 24: which is disposed outside the cabinet substantially in the location of the usual crank by which a phonograph is wound up.

It will be apparent that when the crank is turned in a clockwise direction viewing Fig. 3, the member 18 will be moved along the rod 19 to the right, viewing Fig. 2, thereby swinging the latch 14 upon its fulcrum to release the hook 16 from the eye 17 and that upon rotation of the crank in a reverse direction, the latch will be swung in the opposite direction to re-engage the hook 16 with the eye 17 In the operation of our toy, the plate 11 is first depressed into the cabinet, then the object 13 to be projected is positioned thereon,
