DISPLAY CARD.
Specification-of Iietters laitent. Patented F 1 14 192.2
Application filed June 29, 1920. Serial No. 392,726.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr DOMBER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of I i the city of New York, borough of Manhat- .a piece of cloth tan, in the county of New York and State of New 'York, have invented .a new and Improved Display Card, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to display cards, and more particularly that type of device by means of which it will be possible to arrange a piece of fabric in a manner simulating the appearance of a finished garment.
I judge the appearance of a finished garment constructed of the particular design of cloth which he had in mind.
These devices have presented a defect, however, in that the cloth has appeared in a flat surface thus failing to give anaccurate idea of the garment as it would appear when finished, in view of the fact that the front of the garment presents curved portions conforming to the body of the wearer which curved portions did not appearupon any of the devices aforementioned being used.
With this in view, I have constructed a display card, which may be utilized by dealers or in window display, and by means of which a piece of cloth may be presented in such a manner as to more-nearly conform to the appearance of a completed garment, although my improved card may readily be utilized as a cover plate for the folder receiving a number of pieces of cloth, one of the pieces being shown in the manner aforedescribed.
Reference is had to the attached sheet of drawings as illustrating one practical em bodiment of my invention and in which drawings,
Figure 1 is a front view of a display card constructed in accordance with my invention, and showing a piece of cloth applied thereto, to the improved result aforementioned.
Fi ure 2 is a sectional view taken along the line 2.2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
In these views the reference numeral 5 ind cates a card or plate of any desired mater al, which is formed with a cutout portion simulating in outline, the trunk of a body from which members 6 are shown as extendng with a view of illustrating the limbs of the trunk.
A sheetof material 7 conveniently serves the accompanying illustration, as a securing medium for a layer of cloth 8, which is interposed between the outer face of this sheet and the inner face of the card 5. i
'To now arrange a layer of cloth 8 in a manner in which the same will appear in a more natural arrangement than has been heretofore accomplished, it will be noted that parts of the'layer of cloth directly coincident with the cutout portion of the card 5 are arranged with acertain fullness, as has been indicated by the reference numeral 9,
so that the material might be said to be puckered at this point.
By this arrangement a natural fullness is imparted to the display portions of the layer of cloth, which simulates in a most highly natural manner, the effect ofa garment applied to the body of a wearer. It will be readily understood that any relatively large stretch of cloth arranged in the manner aforedescribed would fail to hold its natural puckered position without some intermediate retaining or supporting means. This is due to the fact that a defect such as this is liable to come into being, assuming that my invention were used in connection with folders, which naturally in shipment are arranged in stacks, and by virtueof the pressure exerted by one card upon the next underlying'card, the fullness or puckering of the layer of cloth would for the most part, be crowded so as to extend adjacent one of the edges of the cutout portion 5.
Having this defect in mind, I now provide such a supporting means, which supporting means shall be in the nature of structure enhancing the appearance of the card. Reference is had now more particularly to Figure 1, in which it will be noted that the cutout portion simulatin the trunk of a body is provided at that point at which the waist line of an actual wearer would come into existence with a belt 10, which belt preferably forms an integral portion of the card.5, and is shaded or otherwise treated to correspond to the figure or member the member which it is intended to represent. I
from the belt 10andoverlie the layer of cloth 8. It will be understood that glue or any other suitable afiixing medium isap plied to the under face of the belt 1.0 and panel 11, Where the latter is used, or to the upper face of the layer of cloth 8, ate point directly underlying these members, so as to cause an intimate engagement between these elements. Thus, the layer portion of the puckered cloth is held so that no great amount of movement is permitted, thus maintaining the desired effect. To now properly support in a similar manher the upper portion of the cloth, thehead 12 has an extending portion 13 directly funderlying thesame; This extending portion is formed so as to simulate the neck aiideX- posed portion of the chest ofithe wearer,
and projects into the cutout portion of the card 5, it being understood that a suitable securing agent is utilized between theunderside of this part and the upper surface of the cloth to again support the latter in the manner described in the preceding paragraph. 1
F rom the foregoing'it will be appreciated that I have constructed a display cardwhich may be utilized for any convenient purpose, and which will permit of the arrangement of cloth in connection with the same in a most highly natural manner, andv which cloth will not become displaced even when subject'to theflhardest usage. 4
It will further be appreciated that I have constructed a display card in which the out line or contour of the cutout portion may be varied to simulatethe contour of any "desired garment, a belt portion 10 of anydesired design being used for supporting'the layer of cloth substantially intermediate the cutout portion of the card, any desired extending portion 13 being used for serving a similar purpose in connection with the upper part of the cloth layer 8. l
