Description

s. s. FRETZ s8. v CONNECTION 0F UMBRELLA RIBS AND STRETCHERS. APPLICATION FILED APR-27, 1921.

ATTORNEYS.
SAMUEL S. FRET Z, SR., OF PHII lA -DELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CONNECTIQNYOF UMBRELLA RIBS AND STRETCHERS.
1 '0 all whom may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. F RETZ, S12,
a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Connection of UmbrellaRibs and Stretcher-s, of which the following is a speci-v fication. 7 p
- My invention consists'of novel connec ion for a rib and stretcher of an umbrella (or parasol) of U or channel shape, the same embodying a plate adapted to straddle the rib and close around the same so as to take firm hold thereof and be prevented from slipping in any direction on the rib, it being adapted to receive the pivot which comprises the axis of the stretcher and serves to retain the connection closed tightly on the rib, the stretcher being mounted on said pivot on the exterior of the connection admitting of the stretcher folding over said rib with freedom and closeness.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and soit is to be understood that the invention'is not limited to the specific details shown .and described, as'long as they are within the spirit or scope of the claims.
Figure 1 represents aperspective view of a connection for an umbrella rib and stretcher embodying my invention.
Figure 2 represents a section thereof on line 22 Figure 1. I
Figure 3 represents a plan View of the connection embodying the invention.
Figure 1 representsa section on line 44 Figure 3.
Figures 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 represent various embodiments of ribs to which the connection is applicable Figure 11 represents a plan view of .another embodiment of the connection.
Figures 13-18 inclusive represent views of other connections embodying the invention.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings.
1 designates a portion of a U-shaped umbrella rib. 2 designates a portion of a U- shaped stretcher therefor, and 3 designates a member forming a connection for the stretcher with the rib.
Specification of Letters Patent.
'Application filed April 27, 1921. Serial No. 465,010.
Patented Feb. 7, 1922.
portions of the former are depressed and so reduced in. cross section producing the neck 211, the terminals of which form the shoulers 5.
The connection 3 consists of a plate ofsuit-' able metal bent-into substantially sleeve or U-shape adapted to straddle and embrace the neck 4 between the shoulders5 and having its end edges adapted to engage the latter. On the inner terminals of the piece are lips 6 which are inturned and approach each other on the inner side of the rib and so close said plate .at the inner side of the neck 4 whereby the connection envelops said neck.
In the sides of the plate adjacent to the lips 6 are openings 7 in which are received the pin or rivet 8' whose ends are suitably headed and which forms the axis of the the longitudinal direction thereof.
The number of necks and consequently of the shoulders thereof may be increased, as in Figures 6 and 7 while in Figure 8, the neck is of a shorter length than in figure 5,
the neck and shoulders are dispensed with,
but the connection with its lipsis applicable to the latter.
In Figure 10, the sides of the neck 4 are somewhat separated, while in Figure .15 the sides are closed and in contact. In Figure 11, the connection is somewhat foreshortened from what is shown in Fi re 3.
In Figure 12, the back of the rib is formed with swell 9 which is adapted to receive the swell 10 on the back of the connection and thus interlock the connection with the rib on theback of the latter, see Figure 15, the same result being obtained by substituting the opening 11 in the back of the connection for said swell 9, see Figures 16 and 17, the wall of said opening 11 being adapted to receive. the swell 9, see Figure 18, thus in eithervcase interlocking theconnection with the rib, and preventing slipping of the same around the rib or in longitudinal direction thereof. v
It will be seen that the ears of the connection are on the exterior of the connection and the stretcher may fold its entire length flat over the rib.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V 1. A connection for a U-shaped umbrella rib and a stretcher, consisting of a comparatively U-shaped member adapted to straddle the .rib at the place of the joint of the stretcher therewith, and have the stretcher mounted thereon, said U-shaped member having inturned portions forming a comparatively closed inner side and a pivot adapted to form the axis of the stretcher, said pivot passing through the sides of said member close to the inner side of the rib.
' 2. In a connection for a U-shaped um-.
brella rib and a' stretcher, a comparatively U-shape member adapted to straddle a de pressed part of said-ribat the place of the joint ofthe stretcher therewith and to have the stretcher mounted thereon, the terminals of the sides of the member having lips in turned towards each other on the inner side of the rib, and a pivot adapted to form the axis of the stretcher passing through the said sides of the member close to the inner side of the rib and in close proximity to said inturned lips.
