Application filed July 1.4, 1.919. Serial No. 319,664.
the work which rotates with the machine spindle, and is simultaneously caused to oscillate, whereby the cutting tool cuts out from the work a pr0file depending upon the form of the pattern. It has not, how ever, been hitherto possible to produce with 7 such apparatus edged work in which straight spindle 5. The spindle 5'passes through cut surfaces are connected by sharp edges.
The subject matter of the present invention is an apparatus for producing edged work in which a copying lever performing movements to correspond with the tool, is
caused to reciprocate by means of a pattern, and is caused to oscillate. The novelty consists in that the copying lever is always maintained parallel with one of the straight sides of the pattern, and tips over the edges of the. pattern with great speed.
A form of construction of the invention is illustrated by, way of example inthe accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a partial vertical section on the line AA of Figure 2,
Figure 2 is a plan, 7
Figure 3 is a front elevation. I The pattern used, with the apparatus as illustrated, consists of a square plate 1, to
which four bolts 2 and a" quadrangular frame 3 are fixed. A roller 2 is rotatably mounted on each'bolt 2; The boss 4 is provided centrally in the plate 1, and serves securely to mount the plate upon a machine the bearing 6 and carriesat one extremity a frame 7., A double armed copying lever 8 rests against two of the rollers 2'. The
copying lever at its pivoting point is fixedly :mounted upon a sp1ndle9. An arm 10 which extends over the frame 3 is carried by the copying lever. This arm carries a roller 11 which travels along the inner periphery of the frame 3. Thespindle 9 rests in a bearing 12. A one-armed tool holder 13 is mounted upon the 'end of the spindle 9, which projects beyond the 'bearing. This tool holder holds atool 14"atits free end. A spiral spring 15 is placed Patented Feed, 1922.
upon the hearing 12. Anfupwardly extend- I causing the lever to be pressed against the roller 2 of the pattern 1. The bearing 12 is disposed at the end of a slide 17. This slide moves in the direction of the arrow 19, and serves to bring forward a cylindrical rod 20, which passes into the sleeve 18' attached to the guide 18. A spiral spring 21 mounted on the rod 20 at one end presses against a projection or stop 22 provided in the sleeve 18', and at the other end against a head 23 screwed to the rod 20. The hearing 6 is disposed upon the upper side of the tguide 18. The latter may for example be ed to the face of a machine tool in any Suitable manner.
The apparatus above described operates as follows: 7
By moving the pattern 1, the copying lever 8 is positively actuated and makes a reciprocating movement in the direction of the arrow 19, with the slide 17, and simultaneously' rotates about the spindle 9 in the direction of'the arrow 25. Q
The spindle 9 communicates the oscilla tions of the copying lever 8 to the tool holder.
13, which is disposed upon the same spindle, and therefore also reciprocates.
Upon rotation of the pattern, the lever 8 I always assumes a position, being guided on the frame 3 (rollers 2'), parallel tothat side of the frame whichis turned towards the lever, and thus the tool holder 13 and the tool 14 are always held in one uniform working position, and in the present case at a right angle to the side of the hole to be cut. As the distance 27 from the axis of the spindle 9 to the cutting edge of the tool 14 (Fig. 2) is equal to the distance 28 ferent speed of rotation from the latter.
Thus, if-the toolacts upon the work with the pattern illustrated in the drawings, the
. onal pattern provided with a guide frame pattern having twice the number of revolutions of the machine spindle, an octagon having inner and outer edges, a copying lever contacting With the outer edges of 15 said guide frame, an arm on said lever contacting with the inner edges of'said guide frame in such a mannerthat the copying lever is always set parallel with one or other of the straight sides of the guide frame and 20 spring means to cause the rapidtipping over of the lever around the corners of the pattern guide frame.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures.
