Be it known that I, AnoLrH F. ANDERSON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicag0,in' the county of Cool: and State of Illinois,- have invented certain newandusei ul Improvements in ,Power-Transmitting.
Mechanism, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to power transmitting mechanism. I It is particularly applicable for'operating power driven Washing machines. 7
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved :power transmitting mechanism. i I
Another objectis to provide improved operating mechanism for a washing machine.
Another object is to provide an improved support for carrying power transmitting mechanism. l Another object is to provide a compact, simple and efficient power transmitting mechanism.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the specification and claims.
An embodiment of the invention applied to a washing machine is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein-- h Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section .of a washing machine showing the power transmitting mechanism in end elevation.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the mechanism.
I Fig. 3 is a top plan thereof,
Fig. 4. is a section on the line 4C--4E of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is a perspective of the base of the transmitting mechanism.
The washing machine shown comprises in general an oscillatingly mounted tub 5 and a wringer 6, both of which are operated by the power transmitting mechanism. The tub and transmitting mechanism are completely enclosed by a housing 7.
One form of housing is described in detail and claimed in my copending application,: Serial No. 336,362 executed of even date herewith. In general this housing comprises a pair of rigid end walls between which the tub is pivotally mounted. The side walls consist of two slidably opening sides 8 and 9 whereby the lower part is closed or opened for access to the bottom of the tub and the power transmitting mechanism. The top of the housing is provided with a slidably Specification of Letters Patent.
. tnted Feb- 19 2-- Application filed November 7, 191a Serial No. 336,363; i Y
mounted cover10 whereby: access maybe had to the opening in the top. of the tub.
The housing'is carried on. a base formed of four angle bars 11, secured together at their ends to form a i substantially-.1 rectangular frame. w v V Extending between and mounted 'upon the front and rear, angle bars 11*; is a base-15 whichis self contained and: which carriesthe powertransmitting --mechanism :unit.
motor-is The'base-and mechanism with the bodily removable'from the casing.
Base 15 ca'rriesan electric motor 16,-whichl furnishes the power fo'rdriving' the tub andv wringer, and-a train of gears whereby the power is transmitted from the motor to the tub and wringenl *The gear train has, a pulley 17 which is connected to the pulley of the motor by a belt 18.
Pulley 17 is rigidly secured to a shaft 19 to which is also rigidly secured a pair of pinions 20 and 21.. Pinion 20 mesheswith a gear wheel 22 rigidly secured to a shaft 23. I
Shaft 26 drives the carriedby 'a' shaft 31. Aconnecting rod 32 end with the tub, so that the tub maybe oscillated thereby when gear wheel 30 is rotated by the motor.
Suitable clutch and controlling apparatus may be associated with the tubv and connecting rod whereby the tub is oscillated and its operation may be suitably controlled. One form .of such apparatus is disclosed and claimed in my copending application,
Serial No. 336,283 executed on evendateherewith.
Base 15 may be f orme d of a single casting, as most clearly shown in Fig. 5 It I comprises an open frame work having'angle shaped sides 35 and 36-which are'substantially. parallel throughout the greaterportion of their length.
end pieces 37 and 38. The end pieces are provided with inturned flanges 4:0 and 4.1-
which rest upon and are boltedto the horizontallyextending flanges of end angle bars: 11, as clearly shown inFig. 2.
The base is provided with three. inboard Sides 35 and 36 are interconnectedat their ends by angle shaped bearings 42, d3 and 44 for j ournaling shafts 31, l9and 23, respectively. These bearings are made long enough so that the shafts do not require any other Support. Bearing 44 is provided with a lug 45 which furnishes a bearing for shaft 26.
The forward end of base has a pair of overturned flanges l6 and 47, which provide guideways for the motor bed 48. The motor bed may be moved along the guideways by an adjusting screw 49 to regulate the tension in belt 18.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A power transmitting mechanism unit for driving a washing machine, having in combination an elongated base plate provided at one end with inturned guideways; a sliding, motor-supporting longitudinally adjustable plate within the guldeways; a
motor mounted on said sliding plate; three parallel transversely positioned inboard journal hearings arranged longitudinally in spaced relation on. said base plate; a shaft supported in each said bearing; gearing connecting the shafts and means for connecting the motor to the gearing.
spaced apart, parallel bearings mounted onand connecting the side members guideways extending longitudinally of the base; a motor supporting plate between the guide members and means to adjustably move the plate to and from the bearings.
3. An integral one piece base plate for supporting a power transmitting mechanism unit, for driving a washing machine, having in combination two side members con nected together at their ends and diverging at one end to provide a motor support; parallel guide ways on the wider end to receive a longitudinally adjustable motor supporting plate; and a plurality of vspaced apart bearing hubs connecting the side members together between the ends of the struc-; ture.
In testimony scribe my name.
ADOLPH F. ANDERSON.
