Specification of Letters Patent.
Patenteddan. 31, was.
Application filed March 7, 1921. Serial 1104450319.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY L. YOUNGREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Clothesline Reel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to reels and more particularly to reels designed to accommodate clothes lines or the like, it being the primary object of the invention to provlde a reel of this character having a novel form of means to restrict movement of the reel to prevent the material wound thereon, from automatically unwinding.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel form of supporting arm, the arm being of a construction to provide a grip for the operator, to permit the operator to hold the reel in his hands to wind the material thereon.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing I Figure 1 illustrates a side elevational view of a reel constructed in accordance with the present invention. 1
Figure 2 illustrates a plan view of the same.
Figure 3 illustrates a plan View of the reel disclosing the manner of winding the material thereon.
Figure 4 illustrates a detail view of the latch member which prevents rotary move ment of the reel. I
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the hub of the reel which supports the outwardly curved spokes 6, which spokes are formed integral with the hub 5, and carry the ring members 7 at the outer ends thereof.
The supportingarm for the reel, forms an important feature of the invention, since, due to the construction thereof, the reel may be held by the operator in a manner as illustrated by Figure 3 of the drawing, to accomplish the winding of the material 8,
ivllziich in the present instance is a rope or the This supporting arm comprises a handle portion 9 and an offset portion 10 which extends inwardly towards the hub of the wheel, and carries the shaft 11 thereon, which shaft supports the reel proper, the reel being mounted thereon, and secured against lateral movement as by means of the cotter pin 12.
Formed at the free end of the arm is a relatively square opening 13, which is designedto fit over the hook member 14: of the bracket 15 that is secured to a supporting post as by means of the screws 16. From the foregoing it will be seenthat due to the construction of the opening 13, and hook member 14, lateral movement of the reel and its supporting arm, with respect to the bracket 15, is restricted.
A portion of the supporting arm is cut away to accommodate the latch member 17 which is in the form of a pivoted pawl, pivoted to the inwardly extending portion of the supporting arm, as at 18, the outer or free end of the pawl, when the pawl is in a position as indicated by Figure 1 of the drawing, lies within the path of travel of the spokes 6, and contacts with the under surface of the spoke nearest thereto, to
prevent movement thereof, after the reel has been rotated to wind the material thereon.
When the pawl is in a position as indicated by Figure 1 of the drawing, the opposite end thereof engages under the laterally extending lug 19 to cause the same to bind, and lock the reel against movement.
In order that the reel may be released, the pawl may be swung on its pivot, to a position as indicated by Figure e of the drawing, whereupon the outer end of the pawl is moved to a position engagingthe offset portion of the supporting arm. 7
. An operating handle 20 has connection with the reel, andalfords means, whereby the reel may be rotated to wind the flexible material thereon.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is i A clothes line reel including a hub, spokes radiating from the hub, a supporting arm including'a handle portion and having an inwardly extending portion, a laterally extending lug formed on the inwardly extending portion, a pivoted pawl having one end as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature 1n the presence of two wltnesses.
