ATTORNEY HENRY HOWARD NEWBY, OF
SAN QUnN'rrN, CALIFORNIA.
SURF BOARD.
Application filed October 26, 1920.
To all 107mm z' may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. NEWBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Quentin, in the county of Marin and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Surf Boards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to surf boards and is an improvement on a patent granted to me Dec. 9, 1919, bearing the Serial Number 1,324,687.
An object of the present invention is the provision of a surf board having a maximum amount of buoyancy and presenting a minimum amount of resistance to the water, whereby the Speed of the board 'will be greatly increased.
Another object is the provision of a propeller driven board in which the propeller and its operating mechanism is located beneath the board within a novel form of frame or cage and provides a stabilizing medium to prevent the board from capsizing and in addition forms a runner upon which the board will readily ride over shallow places.
Another object is the provision of a novel 'form of gearing for driving the propeller,
provision being made for operating the gearing by the rider from a conveniently arranged saddle.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a surf board constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Figure 8 is an end view.
Figure 4 is an enlarged horizontal section taken on the line 5 5 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention is shown as comprising a board 10 which 1s narrow in width and has mounted thereon r floats 11 and 12. These floats are spaced apart and rest upon feet 13 by means of which they arel slightly spaced from the board, while straps 14 serve to hold the floats in position, rllhe hoard iS provided with a Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 419,624.
saddle for the convenience of the rider and this saddle includes a flat seat member 15, a back rest 16 and a base member 17 which connects the back and seat. Y
Depending, from the bottom of the board 10 is a frame or cage 18, the latter including transversely aligned side bars 19 which extend downwardly and inwardly and are connected at their vlower ends by means of a curved bar 20. This last mentioned bar is located centrally of the board and is disposed longitudinally thereof, having each of its ends secured to the board and its intermediate portion curved forwardly and upwardly to provide a runner 21. This runner acts to facilitate the travel of the board over shallow places.
Mounted within the frame 1S is a propeller 22 which is mounted upon a shaft 23 and is driven by gears 24:. These gears are operated by levers 25 the latter having a ratchet connection 25a with a drive shaft. rIhe free ends of these levers being within convenient reach of the rider so that the latter may operate them to impart motion to the propeller and drive the board through the water. The arrangement of the frame and operating gearing provides a suitable means and prevents liability of the board capsizing, while the fore and aft arrangement of the floats 11 and 12 respectively reduces the water resistance and enables the board to travel at considerable speed.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved. to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described. the invention what is claimed is 1. A surf board comprising a pair of aligned floats arranged in spaced relation, means connecting the floats, a saddle supported upon the connecting means and vlocated beneath the float, a frame depending from the float connecting means and including transversely aligned downwardly and inwardly extending spaced rods and a centrally arranged longitudinally curved bar connecting the lower ends of the rods and defining a combined stabilizer and runner, a propeller mounted in the frame, gear-f ing also mounted in the frame for operating the propeller and operating handles connected to the gearing.
2. A surf board comprising a `pair vof aligned oats arranged in spaced relation,
means connecting the floats, a saddle supported upon the float connecting means and Y located beneath said floats, a propeller 1ocated beneath the floats and supported heneath the float conneetingmeans, gearing 1 0 for operating the propeller and reoprocatory means located upon each side of the frame for operating the gearing.
In testimony whereof-I allx my signature.
HENRY HOWARD NEWBY.
