Referring more particularly to the drawings, I have indicated a bar 7, which in the present instance is a hollow tube, but may be made in any other desirablemanner. At the lower end I provide a base 8 having an opening 9 for receiving the bar 7 when the latter is to be used in upright position, and an opening 10 for receiving the bar 7 when it is to be used in horizontal position -see particularly Fig. 3. I preferably make the base so that the bar 7 can be held in the 7 base 8 with a single retaining pin 11, whether in upright or in horizontal position.

In the lower member 13 is a recessformed to snugly receive a jaw 25 which. has its teeth adapted to engage the bar 7 The opening 26 through the member 13 is preferably somewhat larger than the bar 7' in one direction so that the member 13 can rock to disengage the'teeth of jaw 25 from bar 7, see Figs. 3 and 4:. A spring 27 is placed between a suitable portion of member 13 and an arm 28 on link 22 so as to normally press the jaw 25 against the bar. In the upper member 12 I provide a sur iace 29 disposed at an acute angle to the bar At one side of the member 12 is an open-' ing 33 with grooves 34 in the inner walls of I the sides of member 12. The grooves 34, one of which is shown inthe drawings extend'inwardly from the opening 33 and provide bearings for the journals 35 of a handle 36. The handle maybe made in any'desirable manner, but I have indicateditas-hav ing two sides 37- anda wall 38. A. cam 39 is provided between the walls 37 and spaced from the wall 38. Between the cam 39and the wall 38 is disposed an angulararineO formed on or otherwise attached to the aw holder 30. 1 7 ff I At the top of the bar? I have indicated a jaw ll secured to the bar a bolt 42andmay be secured in any desirable manner.
In the hollow top yof the bar '7 I provide a member 43 which has a slot lt therein engaging the bolt 42. This member 43 is useful to attach wire to when'it is desired to stretch the latter. Then by placing wires, and the like.
The jaw 11 may be used in connection withsliding member 12 to provide a vise and when so used it is sometimes convenient to place the bar 7 in openinglO of the base 8 sothat the jaws of members 12 and ll will be vertical.
In the operation of my device the member 12 may be raised to the bottom of a load by simply pulling-up on lever 19. Inthis upward movement the spring-pressed jaws 25 and 31 willslide up the bar'7. When the load is reached by member 12 the lever 19 is swung down and up to cause the members 12 and 13 to move up bar 7 step by step. In this step by step movement of the members 12 and 13 the swinging of lever 19 will be limited in one direction by the end boss 14 and limited in its other direction by a projection 47 on link 22 engaging A particular feature. of this'device is placing the parts in condition so that when there is a load on the surface 16, such load cannot be accidentallydropped. When it is desired to lower a load on member 12, the parts are first placed in their positions shown in Fig. 1 and the handle 36 next placed in its position shown in Fig. 5 and.

This moves cam 39 against arm 40 and draws jaw'31 away from bar 7 and wall 38 tilts member 13' moving jaw 25 away from bar 7 so that both members 12 and 13, together with the parts mounted thereon, are freely slid-able up and down the bar 7, as desired.
