Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 10 designates a handle member such as a stick which is provided with a tapered upper extremity 11. The said stick 10 may be of any Jformation and is not necessarily limited to the precise construction illustrated and the same is applicable to the various forms of tops illustrated in the several modifications of the invention.

Referring particularly to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, the top 12 comprises a head 13 which is preferably but not necessarily of substantially semispherical formation and provided with an annular flange 14. In the specific construction illustrated the head 13 is provided with a reduced depending boss 15 which receives the central opening 16 of the annular flange 14 which is in the nature of a disc. The said disc like flange and head 18 being secured together by means of screws 17. The head 13 is provided with an axial recess 18 having an outwardly flared mouth 19 communicating with the underside of the top.A The opposite closed extremity of. the recess is tapered as at 20. In use and operation, the recess constitutes substantially an axial step bearing for the reception of the tapered end 11 of' the stick 10 to permit of the spinning of the top thereon, the outwardly` flared mouth 19 of the recess serving as a guide for the tapered extremity 11 during the operation of capturing the topafter the same has been upwardly projected therefrom. In order to provide means to minimize the chance of entirely missing and dropping the top, a depending peripheral guard is provided on the flange and as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing, the same is illustrated as a ring 21 supported in spaced relation from the flange by means of the vertical depending legs 22. In operating the toy, should the player miss the outwardly flared mouth 19 in an attempt tov capture the top, the pointed extremity 11 may be manipulated in'such av manner as to enter between the ring 21 and the flange 14 as illustrated by the dotted line position of the stick in Figure 2 of the drawings.

In the modified form illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawings the fiange 23 is preferably dished in order that the under surface thereof will present a guide surface to increase the chance of the pointed extremity of the stick entering the recess. In this form the depending peripheral guard is in the nature of an annular peripheral de ending flange 24 formed integral with the ange 23. The construction of the head and recess in this form is identical with the head illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. In the modified form illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawings, the flange 25 is provided with a depending peripheral guard flange 26 the free extremity of which is inturned as at 27 to provide a receiving space 28 which is adapted to co-act with the tapered extremity of the stick. p

Should the operator miss the outwardly flared mouth 19', the stick may be manipulated in such a manner as to enter' between the ring 21 and the flange" 14 as illustrate'din Figure 2 ofthe drawings.v Any number of players may participate ina' game in which one top is'used and in which each player is provided with a stick and any rules-may be formulated for the playing ofV variousgames. The top when spinning sets up a gyroscopic action which maintains the same substantially horizontal and'prevents tumbling. v l Y *While there'has beenv lillustrated and described several preferred ways in which the top vmay be constructed, -no limitation isv made to the precisel details ofconstruction as variations which fall within the scope lof the appended claims may when found expedient.
