MACKENZIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Fastening-Inserting Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to machines for inserting fastenings and has for its object improving the organization of such machines better to adapt them for operating upon work of varying characteristics.

In the operation of the machine, the work is maintained against the gage by the operator, and when the gage is moved forwardlygi. e. in the direction of the work, itnecessaril thrusts the work forwardly. Consequently, forward movement of the gage is permitted only when the portion of the work contacted by the gage is free to move. During the larger part of the cycle of operations of the machine, how ever such portion otthe work is held against movement due to the work being clamped between thefoot plate and'the horn on to the Specification of Letters Patent.

In the employment of the machine on many kinds of work, for example, in the manufacture of shoes of certain styles, it is necessary to move or adjust the gage during the operation of themachi'ne on asingle piece of work; The adjustmentof the edge gage is effected without checking the operation of the machine, and has heretofore, so far as applicant is aware, been manually performed. Inasmuch as these machines operate very rapidly and the edge gage is capable of adjustment in the direction of the work during a small part only of the cycle of operations of the machine, the operator must act very quicklyto effect complete'adgust-ment of the gage at the desired point of the work. It results frequently that the operator effectsonly an incomplete adjustment of the gage in the short space of time permitted for the operation, thus causing uneven work. I
'In carrying out the objects of this invention, the above and other disadvantages attendant upon present methods of adjusting the edge gage have been obviated. by the provision of improvedpower operated means for effecting the adjustment of the gage relatively to the plane of operation of, the
fastening inserting mechanism, so as to vary the distance by WhlCh the row of. fastenings is spaced from the edge'of the work. In the illustratedembodiment of the invention, the '1.
spring will be relieved from the work during the remainder of the cycle of operations, the spring being rendered operative on the gage, however, at intervals of the succeeding cycles of operations, so that complete forward adjustment of the ga e when once in itiated is assured. The a justment of the gage both toward and from the plane of operation of the fastening inserting mechanism is initiated by a manually controlled member-operabl at any time in the operation of the machine to effect adjustment of the gage at the proper predetermined time in thecycle of operations of the machine.
In operating on certain classe'sof work it isparticularly desirable to move theedge gagetoward or fromthe plane QfOpBIElt-IOD of hefastei'iing inserting mechanism at the same time, that a change is made in the characte of the fastenings inserted by the machine. For instance, it is common for the welt or outsole to be extended further oiit from the marginfof the insole at the forepart of the shoe than in. the shank, and
' itis also desirable, by reason of the greater wear on the ball portion of the sole and the greater thicknessof stock atthe ball portion offthe shoe an'dlat the toe, to insert longer fastenings in the forcpa'rt than in the shank. Accordingly, another. feature of invention resides in the rovision of improved automatic means or moving the cdgegage from one position of adjustment toanother and alsochanging the character of fastening inserted by the machine.

The machine comprises a swinging head 2 carrying fastening inserting mechanism embodyin a driver (not shown) and an awl 4. llfiition is transmitted to the awl in a direction to cause the same to penetrate into the work by means of an arm 6, carrying a cam roll which engages a cam groove in the cam 8, the connections from the arm 6 to the awl being preferably of the character fully shown and described in the application of Fred L. Means are provided for changing the character of the fastening inserted by the machine, as, for example, effectuating a change from shorter to longer fastenings or vice versa. Such means comprises an oscillating member 14 having impact surfaces 16 and 18 on opposite sidesof its axis and an impact member in the form of a plunger 20, the path of movement of which is capable of being changed, so that it may impart a blow against either of-the' impact surfaces 16 and 18 and thereby change the character of fastening inserted bythe machine. The plunger 20 is connected to and operated from, the arm 6, and, inasmuch as the arm 6 effects the work penetrating movement of the awl, it will beunderstood from the i'o-re-.

In a machine of the class described, fastening inserting mechanism, a gage formed to present a bearing surface for engagement with the edge of the work as the work is moved past the fastening inserting mechanism, means for determining a plurality of positions of adjustment of the gage in each of which it will determine the spacing of a row of fastenings from the edge of the work, operatorcontrolled power-operated means for moving the gage from one position of adjustment to another, and means separate from the power-operated means for retaining the gage in such last-named position durin a plurality of succeeding cycles of operation of the machine so that consecutively inserted fastenings are disposed in the same row.

In a machine of the class described, fastening inserting mechanism, a gage formed to present a bearing surface for engagement with the edge of the work to position the work relatively to the fastening inserting mechanism, means for determining a plurality of positions of adjustment of the gage in each of which it will de ermine the spacing of a row of fastenings from tl e edge of the work as the work is moved past the fastening inserting meghanism, power-operated means for moving the gage step by step from one of such positions f adjustment to another, means for rendering the power-operated means inoperative on the gage, and means for effecting reverse movement of the gage.

In a machine of the class described, fastening inserting mechanism, means for feeding the work relatively to the fastening inserting mechanism to cause the insertion of a row of fastenings in the work, a gage formed to present a bearing surface of engagement with the edge of the Work to determine the spacing of the row of fastenings from the edge of the work, means for positively moving the gage in one direction, means separate from the moving means for retainingthe gage in the posi tion to which it is thus moved, means for rendering the retaining means inoperative to permit movement of the gage, and means for moving the gage in the opposite direction when the retaining means is rendered inoperative.
46. In a machine of the class described, a
work support constructed and arranged to support a shoe in inverted position, means for inserting metallic fastenings in the hottomof the shoe, means for feeding the work past the fastening inserting mechanism to cause the insertion of a row of fastenings in the work, a gage formec to present a hearing surface for engagement with the edge of the Work to determine the spacing of the row of fastenings from the edge of the work, and connections between the work feeoing mechanisms and the gage constructed and arranged to move the gage to change the spacing of the row of fastenings from the edge of the work.

In a machine of the class described, fastening inserting mechanism, an awl for feeding the Work to cause the insertion of a row of fastenings in the work, means for withdrawing the awl from the work upon the completion of the feeding of the work, a gage formed to present a bearing surface for engagement with the edge of the work to determine the spacing of the row of fastenings from the edge of the work, and power-operated means for moving the gage toward the plane of operation of vthe fastening inserting mechanism during the feeding movement of the awl.
as. In a machine of the class described, fastening inserting mechanism, means for feeding the work relatively to the fastening leasing the gage from the control of the retaining means, and means for effecting reverse movement of the gage when the gage is released from the retaining means.

In a machine of the class described, means for inserting metallic fastenings, an awl for feeding the work to cause the insertion of a row of fastenings in the Work, mechanism for forcing the aWl into the work a gage formed to present a bearing surface for engagement With the edge of the work to determine the spacing of the row of tastenings from the edge of the Work, and connections between said mechanism and the gage constructed and arranged to move the gage to change the spacing of the row of fastenings from the edge of the work, said connections comprising an element carried by and movable With said mechanism.
