Description

UNITED STATES PATENT ,@OEEicEo JOSEPH PEEVY, OF PASSADUMKEAG, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAY AND COTTON PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. HILOS i, (lated January l, 1856.
sadumkeag, in the county of Penobscot and.
State of Maine, have invented'a .new and useful Improvement in Hay-Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figurel is a side elevation of the press, and Fig. 2 a centralvertical section parallel to side.
Similar letters of reference in the several gures denote the same part of the press.
The nature of my invention consists in swinging the follower to the pressing-beam, and in giving said beam a lateral movement upon guides at the upper portion of the press, so that the pressing portion of the machine may be drawn close to one side of the box during the filling operation, and with facility be made to assume the position requisite for the performance of its function, the details of construction and operation being as follows:
In the drawings, A is the body of the press constructed with an opening,a,in each side for the passage of the pressing-beam B, which is drawn downward by cords or chains C passing over sheaves f at each extremity of the said beam, a lever, D, having pawls b and c above and below its fulcrum d, acting on ratchet E and revolving drum or shaft F, so as to wind thereon the abovementioned cords and effect the pressing in a manner well known to persons familiar with the operation of this class of machinery. rlhe beam B is lifted by cord e, and at the upper portion of opening a is drawn upon the guides or supports t' against the side of the box. The followerIis swung to the beam by connections m, so as to fall into a vertical position as the beam rises, and in this condition is drawn close against the side ofthe box during the filling-thereof, as shown by the red lines in Fig. 2 and the dotted lines in Fig. I.
The operation of the invention is obvious from the construction. The beam is drawn to the middle ofthe press over opening a, the follower I turning into a horizontal position by a slight pressure of the operators foot on the upper edge or lifted by handle Z. Vhen in position shown'by full lines in Fig. 2, the pressing operation is proceeded \with as in presses of similar construction as regards the method of moving the beam. When the beam is lifted after the bale is secured, the follower assumes a vertical position, and with the beam is drawn against the side of the box.
I make no claim to the mode of operating the pressing arrangement, nor do I claim, broadly, the result due to my construction, as other devices have been employed to effect the purpose; but
I claim as new and of my own invention- The combination of the laterally-moving beam B with the swinging follower'I, arranged and operating as and for the purposes speciiied.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses. JOSEPH PEEVY. Vitnesses:
GEO. PATTEN, Jas. D. GLARY.
