To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES KASTENBEIN, of Diapham Road, in the county, of Surrey, flfingland, have invented an lmprovcd Type vlilomposing Machiue, of which the following isa specification:

which springs tend to hold the pushers-in the positions shown in Fig. 4, when not in operation. The metallic plates a-,-which form the outer sides of the compartments A and B, have their loweredges inclined downward and inward toward each other, as shown in Fig. 4, so as to form a hopper ortrough, open at the bottonn'and communicating with the. upper end of the shield E, which is located immediately under it. The shield E, (see Fig. 3,) consists of a metallic plate, having ninety, six grooves formed in its face, corresponding 'innumber and dimensions with the compartmeets in the; cases A'and B. The'upper ends ofthe. grooves communicate'w-ith the con-1- partments containing the. types; and their lower ends terminate in a spout," F,'il1 which are two balances, f and g, the balance 9 to" prevent the type from turning, and the balance f to convey the type into the conduit G, into which the spout empties. The conduit Gr is a long, twisted horizontal passage,'wberein the type at first stands upright, and is gradually pushed along in an inclined position to the justification-desk M. On the con duit Gr, beneath spout F, is a spring, 11, which holds the lastconveyed type, and on the left of the conduit is the pusher H, which pushes the type along. This pusher isadvanced by acam-wheel, I, which receives its motion from the pedal K. 4
The justification-desk M(see Fi g. 2)contains a galley, N, provided with an adjustable sidetick, N, and similar in its purpose to an or dinary composing-stick, lmtmnchlonger. The
, lines arejustiiied in this galley, and-the justiand the other to justify-the matter. As thecompositor presses one of the keys L the rod land bell-crank m are drawn down, inovingforward the pusher O, the point e of which pushes out the lowermost type in the compartment A, and causes it to fall with its face on the ledge 12. When the key is released the spring 0 draws the pusher ,0, lever m, rod 1, and key L back to their original posit-ions, leaving the type free to fall into its corresponding partition 1) in the sh eld E, and through spout F into conduit G, where the words'are formed and pushed along by pusher 1-1.
When italics or small capitals are wanted the compositor presses the keys ltattachedto the outer ends of the pushers l), which operate on the types in the compartment 13 in the same manner as the pushers C operate on those in the'compartmcnt A. When pressure is with, drawn from the keys Rthey are drawn back to their former positions by the springs t. The conduit is providedwith a spring to prevent the first type from falling. \'hen the types in the conduit reach the justification-dcsk M, the operator in frontof the same cuts aline to its required length and pushes it into the galiey on the spring-slide q,- he then moves the pedal 0 with his foot, pushing the slidebar '1 above the linedown into the galley, where it is justified. The operation is repeated until the galley is full, when it is replaced by an empty one. At the end of the conduita plate, r, is placed against the typc'to prevent it from falling.
Before being introduced into the tubes 1 the types are assorted by a distributing-niachine, which works in connection with the composing-machine, and the construction and operation of which are somewhat the reverse of what has just been described in respect't-o the composingmachine.'
The essential andpeculiar feat'urL-sef the distributing-machine I have-described and claimed in a separate application for Letters Patent.
Having thus described my improved apparatus for composing type, whatl claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters -1atcut, is-
1. In a type-composing machine, twoparallel ranges of close'boxes A and B for containing the type, said boxes being formed of the plates a (t and partitions b c, substantially as hereinbefore described.
2. Therelative arrangement of thevertically-moving keys L, and horizontally-moving keys R,'operating in combination with the pushers C and D, respectively, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
The reglets d and ledges n, whenarranged as herein described, below the vertical parts of boxes A B, of the construction specified, and above the inclined or converging bottoms of said boxes, by which the different types are conducted to a common plane for delivery into the shield. v
4. The pusher (J or D, constructed with. a
bifurcated end with the lower portion pro-v longed, as shown in Fig. 4, to adapt it to catch the heel of the type as it is discharged from the reglet d, and operating in combination with the ledges n to drop the said type in proper position as the pusher recedes.

6. The twisted conductor G, extending laterally from the throat F of the vertical shield E, and arranged as described, to take the type in vertical position from the said shield and deliver it in inclined position face forward to the justiiieation-deskav 7. The combination of two'ranges of boxes A and 15, connected by a hinge, Q, to admit of their ready separation, as\explained, when required.
