Description

W. H. MENSCHING.
TOOL HOLDER.
'APPLlCATlON FILED FEB. 17.1921.
' Patented (1333,1922.
g y w Var-fume? UNITED stares PATENT OFFICE. 0
WILLIAM H, MENSCHING, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
' 'roon HOLDER-I To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MEN- SCHING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Tool Holder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved'tool holder adapted to adjustably' retain an edged tool therein. The primary object is the provision of a portable tool holder to be used in connection with an abrasive surface, for rrinding or sharpening of the tool, and whic is adapted tobeused as a plane, or grooving tool.
Another object is the provision of a tool holder having novel means for ready and accurate adjustment of the tool held thereby, to any desired angle for sharpening or cutting.
With these and other objects in view, which will be apparent from the description, my invention resides in the novel combination, construction, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which;
Fig. 1, is a plan View of the holder,
Fig. 2, a side elevation, showing a tool in position,
Fig. 3, a section on line 33 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4, a detail of a part employed.
Throughout the description and the several views, like reference numerals designate like parts. In the preferred form the holder comprises a substantially rectangular frame formed of two similar openwork castings l and 2, provided at their ends with ears 8 and fastened together by suitable securing means at positioned in the ears. The sides of the frame comprise upper bars 5 and lower bars 6, with diagonal webs 7 extending therebetween. These webs are provided with arcuate slots 8, for a purpose to be hereinafter described. Correspondingly slotted side plates 9 are suitably secured over the sides of the frame for greater structural strength, as well as convenience in handling the device.
Disposed between the sides of the frame and substantiallv intermediate the ends, is the tool clamping and adjusting member, comprising a base plate 10, pivoted at its lower end to the bottom bars 6 of the frame Specification of Letters Patent. 7 Patented Jan 3,1922, Application filed February 17, 1921. Serial No. 145,8811 i by means of pins 11 journalled in the lower bars and disposed in lugs 12 formed on the plate. An integral, substantially U-shaped frame extends from the sides of the plate 10 laterally thereof, to form side walls 13 and an outer bar 14, spaced from the plate and parallel therewith. The walls 13 are reduced toward bar 14, whereby the bar is aligned with the central portion of the base plate 10.
Bar 14 is provided with a central thickened portion 15 internally threaded to receivea winged bolt 16 carrying a clamping plate 17 on itsinner end, whereby a tool 18 may be clamped in the holder between base plate 10 and the clamping plate 17. The angular adjustment of the tool is obtained by means of set screws 19 disposed through the slots 8 and threaded into integral lugs 20 on the rear face of the base plate 10. The heads of the set screws '19 are preferably winged, to bear against the side plates 9 for frictional engagement. Adjacent the webs 7, and also the opposite end portion of the frame, steel rollers 21 are journalled between the lower frame bars 6; the peripheries of the rollers extending beneath the frame. For the purpose of insuring rigidity to a tool carried in the holder, I provide keys 22 having channeled heads 23 adapted to be engaged over the upper edge of the base plate 10 between the side walls 13 and the tool. These keys are intended for use with small size bladed tools such as chisels and the like and may vary in size to meet the individual requirements.
The device is adapted to be rolled over a plane abrasive surface, such as emery and the like, and the rollers will serve to dis tribute oil in an efficient manner.
In operation, a desired tool is inserted in the holder and clamped'between base plate 10 and plate 17 with the edge of the tool projecting below the frame the distance desired. The angle of the edge is then adjusted by moving the clamping member on the pivots 11 and locking it in position by means of the set screws 19.- It is obvious that with the proper blades, the device may be used as a plane, or grooving tool, the operation being the same.
While I have shown and described certain details which enter into the construction and operation of my invention, Iv desire it to be understood that I do not limit myself to these, but may use any such as will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim: a 1. A device of the character described comprising a substantially rectangular frame having side and end walls, a plate disposed I in the frame between the side walls and pivoted thereto, a clamp support carried by,
said plate, a clamp in said support for clamping a tool against said plate, means carried bysaid plate for slidable engagement with the side walls of said frame for angular adjustment of said plate relative to the frame, and supporting rollers in the 3. In a tool holder, a portable frame,
rollers arranged therein for supporting said frame, a plate pivoted in the frame, a clamp carried by said plate, an edgedtool retained in said clamp and extended beneath said frame, and means carried by said plate adapted to i slidably and kadjustably engage the sides of the frame for angular adjustment of the plate. 0 4. A tool holder comprising a frame having side and end walls, supporting rollers arranged between the side Walls, a clamping member adapted to receive an edged tool disposed in the frame and comprising. a base plate pivoted at one end to the side walls of said frame, an integral U shaped member extending laterally of the base platebetween the side Walls .of the frame, a a
bolt threaded in said U shaped member, a clamping plate carried by said bolt, the side Walls of said frame being slotted, lugs on said base plate, and setscrews disposed in said lugs and positloned in said slots for v clamping engagement with the side walls of the frame for angular adjustment or" the clamping member in the frame. a
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
