Description

E SCHROEDTER.
ASH RECEIVER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 29, 1920.
1,401,2 2, Patented Dec. 27, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND SCHROEDTER, OF BROOKLYN. NEW YORK. ASSIGNOR TO THE 0. MAURER COMPANY, INCORPORATED, OF BROOKLYN,
NEW YORK NEW YORK. A CORPORATION OF ASH RECEIVER.
Application filed June 29,
To In whom it may concern:
lie 1t known that I, Emuxn Scnuonnrnu. a citizen of thel nited States, and a resident of Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ashdieceivers, of which the following -is a specification.
My present invention is a receiver for cigar and cigarette ashes particularly designed for use in sedans and in other closed cars.
The objects of the invention are to provide a holder which will be ready at all times to receive the ashes, which will pre vent scattering of the ashes and which can be quickly and easily emptied and cleaned.
The invention involves a number of novel features of construction, combinations and relations of parts, as will be disclosed in the following specification. which is to be read in conjunction with the drawing accompanying and forming a part thereof.
In the drawing referred to:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the cover as lifted oil of the receptacle.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of. the complete device- Fig. 3 is a detached detail view of the hinged flap.
The body of the device consists of a receptacle 5 of convenient size and shape. the same being herein shown as of substantially semi-cylindrical form in cross section. and as having a back wall 6 adapted to rest flat against the supporting structure. such as the dash of the automobile. This back wall is also shown as provided with means by which the device is detachably mounted on its support, such means including the key hole slots to receive headed supporting studs projecting from the ace of the supporting structure. 7
The upper end of the receptacle is preterably cut on an outward and downward slant. as indicated in Fig. 1. This upper end of the receptacle originally is entirely open, but in the completed device i closed by an inclined cover 8 which is shown-pivoted at its upper edge at 9 to the rear or back wall of the receptacle. This cover may be formed with .a dependent flange 10 fitting closely over the mouth of the holder, but so arranged as to not interfere with the cover swinging freely open when the receptacle is Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1921. 1920. Serial No. 392,628.
detached from its support and reversed to empty the contents.
In the central portion of the cover there is provided an ash receiving opening 11 and about this opening there is provided. an ash confining guard flange 12. The upper edge of this flange may be substantially horizontal, as shown, so as to form both a guard and a pocket receiving the ash-end of the cigar or cigarette and directing the ashes into the openlng.
The ash opening is closed by a flap or door 13 hinged at 14 to the under side of the cover and. suitably counterweighted as indicated at 15 so as to automatically swing closed as soon as pressure on the same is released.
In use, the cigar or cigarette is merely touched against this flap, which swings freely open and drops the ashes into the receptacle, closing again as soon as the opening force is removed. The guard flange about the opening both guides the cigar or cigarette and confines any stray ashes which may be flicked oil. causing the same to ,drop through the opening as the flap swings inward. \Vhen the receptacle is to be emptied, it is simply removed .from its support by lifting it far enough .toenable the heads of the supporting studs to passthrough the enlargements in the key hole slots and then,
upon inverting the receptacle", the cover will swing open and empty the entire'contents.
The downwardly inclined upper edge of the receptacle gives full-access to the interior of the receptacle, and this, with the'wide open swinging of the cover and the easy removability of the receptacle from its sup-.
port. facilitates and promotes the cleaning of the receiver so that the samemay be easily kept in a sanitary and wholesome condition.
In the particular construction herein shown thecover is hinged by means of a pin inserted through pivot openings 16 provided in the dependent flange 10 of the. cover and through openings 17 in the side walls of the receptacle, said pin being headed over or otherwise'fixedin this relation. Also in this particular illustrationthe cover is provided at the rear with a dependent flange 18, the back of the receptacle being-cut down at 19 to receive the same. This dependent flange, when the receptacle is engaged with its support.
port, may bear against the surface of the support so as to prevent the cover being lifted when thedevice is attached to its sup- This prevents the cover from rattling and from being lifted accidentally or other- Wise, so long as the device is attached to vits support, but when the receiver 18 removed from the support, the rearward flange 18 of the cover no longer prevents the cover from swinging freely open and therefore does not interfere in any way with the empty passage, a closure for sai passage, and means for holding said closure normally closed but sensitive to the opening pressure of the ash end of a lighted cigar or cigarette.
2. An ash receiver comprising a receptacle provided with an ash passage and with aclosure therefor opening into the receptacle and balanced to normally stand closed but to open upon contact of the lighted end of a cigar or cigarette therewith and an upstanding external guiding and ash confining flange about the ash passage.
3. An ash receptacle having an ash passage and a downwardly inclined closure therefor pivotally supported at its upper end and lightly balanced to normally stand closed but sensitive to open upon contact of the ash end of a cigar or cigarette therewith.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of J une, 1920.
