Description

A. MOCHA.
COLLAPSIBLE CHAIR.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 10, um.
Patented Dec. 27, 1921.
INVENTOR "fir A TTURIVEY Um'rso STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AZN'DBZEJ MOCHA, OF EAST DOUGLAS, MASSACHUSETTS.
GOLLAPSIBLE CHAIR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I ANDRZEJ MOCHA, a citizen of Poland, residing at East Douglas, in the count of Worcester and State of Messachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collaps ble Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hinge joints and has for its principal ob ect to provide a joint particularly ada ted for use on chairs, tables, and other fol able articles of furniture.
Another object of the inventlon resides in the provision of a device for holding the chair legs in various adjusted positlons and yet arranged so as to permit the same to readily be folded so that the article of furniture will occupy a minimum amount of s ace.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 1s a slde view of a chair illustrating in dotted lines the legs in folded position,
Fig. 2, is a front view of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3, is an enlarged fragmentary side view of the chair, showing the oint in detail Fig. 4, is a front view of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing in detail the numeral 10 desi nates the seat of the chair, having secure to its underside brackets 11 provided with downwardly extending lugs 12. Each lug 12 is provided w th a circular opening 13 having communlcatin therewlth a rectangular recess 14, the use 0 WlllCll Wlll appear as the description proceeds. The lug 12 is slotted as at 15 to receive a spring tongue 16 which is arranged in such a mannor as to have its free end disposed within the opening 13 for a pur ose to be more full hereinafter describe E'hch chair leg is desl nated by the numeral 17 and is provid at its upper end Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1921. 1921. Serial No. 476,375.
with a fork containing a longitudinal slot 18 which is adapted to straddle the lug 12 as illustrated in Fig. 4. A rectangular pin 19 is fixed in the fork to pass through the slot in the upper end of the chair leg 17 and is normally forced into the rectangular recess 14 by the spring 16 in such manner as to cause the fiat faces of the rectangular recess 14 to engage and hold the fiat faces of the pin 19 and thereby prevent the leg 17 from swinging relatively to the seat 10.
W on it is desired to change the position of the chair leg the same is moved longitudinally of the seat 10 so as to bring thepin 19 into the circular opening 13. In this position it is obvious that the leg may be readily swung intothe position illustrated in the dotted lines in Fig. 1 and upon releasing the pressure on the leg the spring 16 will urge the pin 19 into the recess 14 and thereby hold the leg in folded position.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that certain minor changes, in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is Folding furniture comprising a body element, brackets secured tothe lower surface of said body at the corners thereof, lugs depending from said brackets, said lugs hav ing a square opening communicating with a circular opening, the center of the opening being arranged in a plane parallel to said body, legs forked at t eir upper ends to receive said lugs, square pins fixed to extend through the forks, said pins being normally received in the square openings of the lugs and suited to turn in the adjacent circular opening, and a bent flat spring fixed in said bracket adapted to urge said square pin into the mentioned square opening 1n said lug.
In witness whereof I aflix my signature.
ANDRZEJ MOCHA.
